Getting Reacquainted
Danny was thrilled that more of his associates from the Malcontents group were coming to Summerview. It meant that it was going to be a place where things were happening. And what he knew of Xi’s plans told him that he wouldn’t have long to wait. Danny loved nothing more than pleasing Xi with his work, but maybe second best to that was the perks that came with it. Perks like being on Lily’s good side.
She made him feel almost as important and needed as Xi herself did, and Danny adored her for it. He’d probably do anything Lily asked him to do unless it went against Xi. But he trusted Lily - perhaps foolishly - to never do anything against Xi’s interests. They had taken a stroll through the town, Danny giving brief explanations of all the places of business, offering up his profanity laced opinions. He’d worn his usual attire, a touch of sloppy, not exactly fitting him, second-hand, and he was aware of what he must look like standing next to the impeccably dressed Lily. It amused him what people who passed them must be thinking. Eventually they settled down at a nice table at Vino Veritas to decompress all they’d observed and not already spoken out loud. Vino was a place Danny hadn’t spent a lot of time in purely because it intimidated him with its finer menu and prices. He was self-aware enough to know he didn’t fit in, and usually had the decency not to flaunt it in other people’s faces. “So?” He smiled at Lily and took a swig - rather than a proper sip - of the wine they’d ordered. Danny wasn’t above letting Lily pay for everything, either. He figured she’d prefer it that way, because if he were paying, they’d be drinking cheap beer or whiskey. “So what?” Lily asked, reaching up to touch Danny’s wrist, “Slow down, darling, this isn’t a cheep beer, you don’t need to slurp at it like that. And it certainly isn’t going anywhere.” She’d had quite an unexpectedly lovely time with Danny, finding his commentary about the town both informative and amusing. She laughed at all the appropriate times, filing pertinent information away for questions that she needed to ask later. She tilted her head, lifting her glass to her lips and taking a sip. “If you’re asking for my opinion on the town now that we’ve had a wander, I’m still not sure. It seems awfully small; it’s a wonder anyone has secrets here. But it’s quaint, and the weather seems to be less dire than I was anticipating for it being on this side of the coast.” Brushing her hair over her shoulder and dragging her finger down the menu, she looked at what was on offer and hummed. They could decide later, when the waitress returned. Though Danny might not have looked like he belonged amongst those that had gathered here, if anyone said anything of ilk they would very quickly meet the sharp end of Lily’s tongue. Danny was an important puzzle piece in Lily’s overall plans, she wasn’t about to lose that. “Like I said, it’s easier to consider settling here for a while knowing that you’re here. Someone I can trust. That’s so hard to find these days.” She sighed, turning large, dark eyes to Danny. “After what happened to me in Canada, I certainly need to know that I have people to look out for me.” Danny paused when she touched his wrist and he looked from her hand to the wine glass, giving her a sheepish smile. His attention was drawn to the way she moved her hair and how her hand stroked the menu. That lucky fucking menu. Lily wasn’t like a normal succubus, Danny knew, but damn did she move like one. He took a sip of the wine this time to drag his thoughts back to their conversation and savored the flavors this time before swallowing. It was a very good wine, of course. Nothing but the best for Lily. In that way, she was a lot like Xi. Weather, small town, quaint. It summed up Summerview nicely. Danny liked those things about it, and nodded before adding, “If you ever need a bigger taste of a city, New York isn’t that far away. And Atlantic City isn’t too bad.” Though he doubted that Atlantic City or its reputation would be up to Lily’s standards. Danny was flattered by her words to him, though. He grinned, feeling his ego given a much-needed boost, and a bit of swagger showed in his posture. “Or, you know, you could just shack up with me and say fuck those bigger cities.” He almost choked on his next sip of wine. “Wait, what happened in Canada?” “Atlantic City doesn’t appeal, but I would like to visit New York. I haven’t been there since I first came to America, and water-logged and generally disgruntled I didn’t get much of a chance to enjoy it. All the survivors were somewhat rushed away anyway.” She sipped her drink, “Would you care to join me? We could go out for the day. I have so missed your company.” She hummed as he grinned at her and just chuckled, reaching over and touching his hand again, a fleeting brush of her fingers against his skin. “Darling, I would love nothing more than to ignore the big cities, but so many of my business dealings are there.” Thankfully she didn’t have to deal with the board meetings, which was a relief, but occasionally she did have to show her face. “Maybe next time I’ll bring you with me. You can help me make sure people are in line.” A very heavy sigh escaped Lily when he asked about Canada. She shifted, placed her glass down and offered her other hand to him, pushing the silky sleeve up to reveal fading bruises along the underside of her arm. “I was travelling to see if there were others that might wish to join our cause,” she said, voice low, “after all, recruitment is very important. When I got beset upon by humans.” It wasn’t technically the truth, but it was close enough. “I ended up getting my arm broken in at least three places.” She pouted her lower lip at Danny. “Another reason I came here instead of to one of the other sanctuary cities. This is the only one that holds someone of importance.” “I’ll go,” Danny said readily, encompassing both offers to travel and accompany Lily. He was thrilled that she’d ask, that she’d need him around. Surely Xi wouldn’t mind if he took a few days off in Summerview. It was for Lily, after all. When she showed him her arm, Danny reached out with both hands and clasped hers, gently touching the bruises with a slow hiss escaping his clenched teeth. “Those fuckers!” He almost shouted it, voice loud enough to cause several other diners to look their way curiously. Danny was seething. “I hope you fucking killed those sonsofbitches.” It was snarled out and for a moment, briefly for those who knew what to look for, the skin on his neck and the sides of his face rippled with a show of copper scales. “You want me to take care of them?” He almost hoped Lily hadn’t killed them so that he would have the pleasure of doing so himself. Lily looked delighted when Danny offered to go with her on any travels. She was sure they would have a wonderful time in New York, she would take him to nice places and they might see a show or two. She’d assign him to look menacingly at people outside the board room for a while… it would be wonderful. When he took her arm she drew in a breath, not because his touch hurt but because of the vehemence of his reaction. She caught the subtle ripple and her other hand immediately lifted to cup his cheek, draw him close and press a faint kiss to his lips. “Shh, Danny, what’s important is that I’m here now.” She did, however, nudge his nose with hers and offer him a tiny smile. “When I go back, I would expect nothing less than you by my side to help me.” Danny was still seething, but her touch and brief kiss helped immensely to calm him down. He returned the touch, bringing his hand up to twine a lock of her dark hair around his fingers, letting the silky smoothness soothe him further. “I guess you’re right.” He admitted, thinking that the other important thing was that those humans would pay, and pay dearly. Letting out a calming breath, Danny took her hand from his cheek and turned it to kiss her palm, then the inside of her wrist. His hazel eyes met with hers. “You want to get outta here?” “Of course I’m right,” she reassured, tilting her head into the touch to her hair. “They’ll pay, though, I promise you that.” And they would, but she needed to lick her wounds first, gather the resources. Nissa, Danny, Noah and maybe a few others that she could rope into taking on an entire town and a dragon. Her own breath escaped her slowly when he kissed her palm and she met his gaze with her own, that soft smile taking on a slightly impish tone. “What did you have in mind, love?” “I gave you a tour of the town,” he started, his own devilish smile catching at the sight of hers, “now I have to have a tour of your place. And then, after that…” He shrugged and lightly traced his nails across the inside of her wrist where he’d kissed. “Well, maybe I forgot what you taste like. It’s been so long. Gonna need a tour of that, too.” That was another perk of being on good terms with Lily. Sex with a succubus was the kind that sapped every ounce of strength he had and left him utterly spent. He knew that she fed off that kind of thing, but was more than willing to provide that meal for her. Lily hummed again and shivered, letting Danny feel the ripple of the movement down her arm where his nails were dragging along her skin. “As if you could ever forget me,” she purred, catching his cheek again and pressing another kiss against his lips. “But I’d be glad to remind you.” Knowing that neither her abilities nor her persuasive touch were needed for him to follow her, she got to her feet, left a $50 on the table to cover their wine and a significant tip. Starting to walk away, Lily just beckoned him over her shoulder. Danny got right to his feet and followed her, still tasting that brief touch on his lips. He caught up and looped his arm around her waist so they could walk together, steps syncing up, and Danny looking very much forward to the rest of their evening. It had been a while since he’d been with her and while he didn’t like saying he was addicted, exactly, he did crave her touch when she wasn’t around. They had a lot of time to catch up on. |
