James had offered to drive her home, of course, he did, the gentleman. It was a slight joke when she had called him that before to Julius, but now she was starting to think there was more truth to it than she had realized. But the fact that she had told him about Australia and a bit about her deal - but not really because that was so damn vague but she still regretted it - didn't mean she was any less paranoid. Hell, he had even called her out on it.
So no, she hadn't taken him up on it. Because it was cold, and he looked so comfortable when she kissed him at his front door in his warm house. Summerview wasn't large and the walk wasn't long, not in the scheme of things, not in comparison to what she had done in the past. Besides, she had brought a sweater because she hadn't been sure what their plans were. Maeve honestly wasn't sure why she brought up the deal at all, especially when she knew she couldn't tell him about it. Not without context, not without bits of her unraveling. She was lucky Julius had already known as much as he did or she wouldn't have been able to say anything at all, words either getting stuck in her throat or coming out in an angry frustrated mess. Briar had spent her life running from her beginning.
But James, and this town, made her want to try. Or something. It was confusing. Really, she needed to think about it, decide how much of Maeve she was going to let fall away in James's presence now. Needed a plan. Those were usually her forte. But that required an end goal, and she wasn't sure what that was in this instance.
So she needed a plan, but what she wanted was familiar ground, and a distraction, a reminder of - something, what she was and what she had chosen, maybe. It was confusing. Her phone was in her hand without hesitation, Happy New Year, Pretty. a pause, Why is 2019 starting off so cold?.
