He clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “Isn’t it always?” That was how he came to be just so, wasn’t it? Or, well the opposite, but it was kind of a vice versa situation. Good for someone else bad for him.
“You and just about everyone else around here I hear a lot of stories like that. That’s why we’re all here, you know. History’s full of places like this too. Where do you think Australia came from? Take whoever society doesn’t want and throw them on an island somewhere.” He rolled his eyes, joke was on them anyway. Australia turned out alright. You know aside from the giant spiders and koalas with chlamydia. “Anyway my point was, so what? So maybe based on some definition someone said you shouldn’t have been born, but clearly you didn’t really take that to heart or you wouldn’t be here. You’re Australia.”
“Sure I can,” he said, grinning broadly, all teeth and fangs. “History is written by the victors. And when you’re on the winning side it a pretty easy to omit things.”
Mircea shrugged. “I have to believe chance happens, at least incrementally. I think the fact that people even bother going about something sideways shows that something has changed. Maybe not with them, but with people around them that makes them feel like this behavior isn’t acceptable anymore.”
