RP: When the moon waxes
Date: 13 August 1997
Characters: Remus Lupin and Bill Weasley
Location: the Hog's Head
Summary: Remus checks in with the Order and has to face the consequences of his choices.
Remus Apparated into the Shrieking Shack with a soft crack, wand held at the ready. It seemed unlikely that someone would be lurking there - there was only one other time that he'd encountered someone in the Shrieking Shack that he hadn't expected to see, and that had been many moons ago (and he, unlike most people, could actually recount his life by the moon) and Sirius' fault. His eyes flickered over the room to which he'd Apparated, taking in the peeling wallpaper and dust-covered floors. There were marks that he recognized as his own - claw marks dug into plaster, scrapes running along the wooden planks of the floor. He'd spent so many miserable nights there, tearing at himself and crying out in pain - frightening the villagers from the haunted house in the middle of the field.
There were times he had regrets about letting James, Sirius, and Peter transfigure themselves into Animagi. It had been reckless and dangerous, and more importantly, utterly stupid, but there was a part of him that was grateful they'd been there. The days after his transformations had been better when he was allowed to run through the forest, with smells and sights and familiarities. He'd been sore, but not battered and bruised. He'd been loved. And for a boy who'd been sheltered and hidden for most of his childhood, that was important.
He headed down the stairs, shaking his head at himself. Who was he kidding? It was still important. Tonks had loved him, and he loved her, and his child...there was no way he couldn't love his child. He swallowed thickly, once again wondering if he was, indeed, acting like a coward. He'd never expected that Harry might find him so disappointing, but the sting of Harry's words was fresh, and they'd cut deep.
He cast a Disillusionment Charm on himself before exiting the Shrieking Shack and walked through Hogsmeade, avoiding the few people walking through town. He turned into the Hog's Head, and after walking through the door, did a quick surveillance of the room and removed his charms. He didn't see anyone, much less someone who would be after him, and he had news to report. He needed to tell the Order that Harry, Ron, and Hermione were all right. He needed to mention how Order members would likely be tailed. He also needed a drink, and perhaps some food, but that wasn't important as the Order's information.
