RP: A Quiet Shock...
Date: 3 August 1997, Evening
Characters: Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Lupin
Location: Tonks' (and Remus') Flat, Just off Diagon Alley
Status: Private, Unless you want to knock on the door!
Summary: Tonks finally breaks the news to Remus about their unexpected bundle of joy.
Completion: Complete

Coming home was rarely difficult for Tonks, at least not since they had been married but a scant month before. Despite her flat being tiny, there was a warmth with Remus' presence that it hadn't ever held before. It truly felt like a home and not simply a place of residence near to her work. And she did live near to London, just down a little side alley off of Diagon and above a shop that sold magical time pieces and the like. Her apartment consisted of a single, small living area and an even small bedroom beyond. The living area held two shabby couches and a plush chair, all of different textiles, surrounding a fire place and an old, knicked coffee table. The floors were hardwood and worn, but covered with comfortable rugs of all different colours and shapes. Everything looked hand-me-down from her furniture, to her curtains and even to her dishware, but it was all immensely comfortable, well loved and practical. In short, it was Tonks.

She loved her flat. She loved her husband. She loved coming home, but just not tonight. There was really no denying her suspicions any longer and, a quick trip to Mungo's on her lunch hour confirmed, she was pregnant. She wasn't just sick with some mid summer cold or stomach bug, but hormones and the preparation for entirely too many unexpected changes. If the world wasn't too quickly tumbling towards war, if just today she hadn't heard from her boss' lips the shift in powers at the Ministry, if they had possibly just been married a month or so longer, the entire matter might be considered a blessing. But all those factors built upon each other to make the news possibly mote frightening than happy. She didn't even know how to tell him.

And that fear, that dread, is what made her hesitate outside her own door. She walked home instead of apparating tonight. She stopped at the Cauldron for a mug of tea. She listened to the various rumors and heated whispers about the resignation/removal/disappearance/killing of Rufus Scrimgeour. The account of the matter changed depending on who was speaking about it and to whom they were speaking. It wasn't necessarily her job or assignment, but Tonks couldn't help but keep an ear open for all the heated information. And it did delay her homecoming, but she could only delay so long.

Now, almost a full two hours late from her usual time to return home from work, Tonks finally worked up the courage to push open her front door and walk up the stairs to their tiny flat. She slipped the key in the lock, focused her mind and a quiet word on dropping the few protective wards she had in place, and slipped into the living room. "...Remus? Are you home?" It wasn't her usual greeting either. Not a friendly 'wotcher', or a kiss, or the usual immediate removal and tossing away of her Auror's robes to some random arm of a chair in the room. She was quiet tonight. Pensive.

Remus was up and out of his seat in seconds, his fingers flexing and curling around his wand as someone rattled at the door. Very few people would be able to get past Dora's wards, and those who did would hardly bother to use the key, but he was not about to approach the door unarmed. Voldemort had infiltrated the Ministry, where his wife worked, and she was late. Two hours late. Remus doubted that the minutes could have ticked by any more slowly.

He'd been half inclined to send a message to her through his Patronus, and had strongly considered sending one to Arthur, as well, but they were both at the Ministry. He owned no owl. He had no way of knowing whether or not she was safe, or if she'd been stalled with work, and no amount of tea, or whiskey, or both (which was the current case) could soothe his nerves.

She was all he had--all he had. Surely she realized it?

Dragging one hand down the length of his face, he stood behind the door and watched it open. Dora's figure slipped through the door, the soft light reflecting off of her hair, and when she called out to him, he stepped away from the wall. It was her. She'd decided on that color in the morning, though it was fading in and out rather strangely. No other person could imitate that.

"Where have you been?" he asked, unable keep the frustration and worry out of his voice. He stepped forward and grabbed her, almost desperately. "Dora, I thought something had happened!"

As she whispered to him this morning, her hair was a deep auburn red. It was their code, so he knew it was her coming in the door and not someone impersonating her. These were paranoid times and, both active with the Order, few knew it better than Remus and Tonks. Her hair slipped back towards her natural brown before her mind forced her energy to reassert and her hair to keep the red she told him she'd have. Still, the fading betrayed her current exhaustion. It had been a horribly long day. Long even that, perhaps selfishly, she hadn't even dreamt of the state he'd be in with her being late from work. Late nights were something she suspected they'd have to become used to.

The sudden grasp against her form shocked her, woke her up a bit more as she, in turn, wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into a tight, tired hug. He was warm from the fire and the comfort of indoors, he smelled familiar and musky. Shaggy as ever and so entirely the man she loved, Nymphadora closed her eyes quietly and said nothing a few moments, just savouring the thing she had been dreading -- coming home.

She finally pulled back, after a few moments of her smooth cheek resting against the scruff of his own. She didn't entirely let go, but she loosened herself enough from his arms so she could look up to his eyes. There was earnest apology and a touch of guilt in her tired gaze. "Remus, I... I'm sorry. I had to stay a bit after work. Then... I stopped at the Cauldron. I had to hear... hear what people were saying. There is too much happening. People are speaking freely now, but it won't last long. I had to get what information I could. I... I should have sent an owl. I'm sorry." Her apology was genuine even if the mistake was no doubt a symptom of her youth. One of the biggest differences between them, though they'd manage to over come it. She still acted her age at times, difficult as it could be.

Remus hugged her tightly, clinging to her and breathing her in. He still wasn't sure how to handle being married, or the wealth of emotions that flooded through him every time he saw Dora's face. He'd spent so much of his life alone, so many years, and every person he'd ever loved had left him. Sirius's return had been a bitter taunt, like someone dangling food in front of a starving man before snatching it away again. He hadn't been sure if he could go through that again, and had done his best to resist Dora, but you couldn't stop yourself from loving someone, and Dora hadn't let him.

She was vibrant and beautiful, loving and stupid, stupid for loving him, a werewolf. He was persecuted by the Ministry, disliked by her parents, and unemployed. There was nothing remotely good about him in that respect, and yet, she didn't care. He loved her so much.

"Don't," he whispered, pressing his mouth against her hair. He wanted to say 'Don't apologize', or 'Don't do it again', but the words refused to come out. Instead, he nodded somberly and took her hand, leading her to the sofa.

"I spoke with Arthur this morning," he said quietly. "He said there was a rumor that they're after Harry." The they was no longer restricted to Death Eaters, but Ministry officials, too." His eyes searched her face for a long moment. "Are you all right? Shall I make tea? Something stronger?"

Tonks let her hair fall back entirely to it's natural, mousy, soft brown now that she was assured he knew it was her and she was home, safe and sound. The feel of his arms around her, his lips in her hair, it was enough to make her sink even deeper against him, relaxing with a surprising suddenness that she didn't even expect. She breathed him again deeply once more before she stood straighter and nodded in understanding at his words. They had become close enough that she could nearly understand his sentiments even if he never got them out his lips. The look on his face was enough.

Tonks did pause before sitting, just long enough to remove her robes and reveal the simple pair of gray slacks and pink camisole that she worn beneath her work clothing. She'd be far more comfortable in jeans and a ripped shirt, but she had grown up a bit over the years and work was a time for more proper clothing. She'd, no doubt, go change within fifteen minutes, but for now she just wanted to sit with her husband. "Tea... tea would be lovely. But, Remus. Relax with me a moment. It has been a ... very long day." Tonks admitted quietly, not quite able to meet his eyes. She seemed almost nervous.

She did nod to his question, though. "Yes, The ministry has... turned upon itself. Or turned upon us, I suppose. Thicknesse is in charge now, and he put Yaxley in charge of our department. It's ridiculous. I have to speak to Gawain in private, sometime. I'm not certain how deep the corruption goes but... this is not natural. These men are not on the right side. It's getting bad, Remus. It's going to be so... bad." She then looked up, nodding a single moment as she watched his eyes, "And they are starting with Harry."

He sank down onto the couch and watched her as she took her robes off, assuring himself that she'd been safe. He knew she wouldn't lie to him, but could not help it, even as his worry ebbed. Pulling her close, he listened quietly as she described her day.

"Yaxley?" he echoed, the lines in his face deepening as he made sense of that news. He was familiar with the name and knew his ties to Thicknesse meant trouble. "Are you sure Gawain's not involved?" he asked seriously. "You must be careful about this. There's already trouble for you, you know that."

A familiar weight settled on his shoulders, and that only increased when she mentioned Harry. "What are their plans, do you know?"

He met her eyes, hoping she had an answer. Dumbledore put so much trust in the boy, and though Remus trusted him, it didn't seem right that Harry, Hermione, and Ron were dealing with everything on their own. They were too young and too naive; they hadn't been through this before, not like the older Order members. Hell, his own wife hadn't even been through it before.

Dora sunk to the side, in his arms, resting against his shoulder and turning her head so her nose lightly brushed his clavicle. She knew she could not fall asleep there, but there was a great part of her which desperately wanted to. She could speak with him in the morning, they could worry about this later. Maybe she wouldn't have to tell him? Somehow the war would end quickly and then she could tell him, when everything was fine. The thought across her mind was enough to force her to sit up straight again. It wasn't a time for comfort. Not yet.

She shifted on the couch, pulling her leg up to rest the base of her foot against the inside of her thigh. She had kicked her shoes off almost immediately upon sitting, so her feet were bare save for mismatched argyle socks. She didn't totally pull away from him, though. Her fingertips lingered against the side of his ribs, just touching lightly, a familiar warmth and weight as the discussed less than comfortable issues.

"The ministry wants to find Harry again. They say it's to 'question' him about Dumbledore's killing but... we know it's more. They're making him the number one suspect. I've asked Gawain to be put on the team they're assigning to tracking Harry down. It'll be a tight rope to walk but, well, I'd rather it be me and someone I trust, or can control, than people who might really be working for someone like Yaxley. We can protect him, at least. If Gawain does it, we'll know he's still on our side. If he doesn't..." She frowned, leaving the thought unspoken that then they'd have to take Gawain out of power along with the rest. She didn't like the thought.

It was reasons like this that he was grateful Dora and Kingsley were working in the Ministry. The Order was lucky to have as many Ministry employees as they did, and he sincerely hoped it lasted. Harry needed all the help he could get, and if he wouldn't take it directly, then they'd aid him however they could.

"If he doesn't, it means we'll have to be even more vigilant," he said. He inhaled deeply, his fingers running up and down her arm. "It won't do to draw attention to yourself, or the fact that you're protecting Harry. Let Gawain be the one to make his revelations." He wasn't sure why he was lecturing her; he knew she was already aware of it.

"I'm glad you're trying to be on the team," he told her, and managed a thin smile. "Harry needs you. I just want you to be safe. I love you, you know."

He leaned down to kiss her. "You're really OK?" he asked. He knew she was upset by Thicknesse's appointment as Minister, and by Yaxley's newly acquired position as Department Head, but they were familiar with dealing with the Ministry and its corruption. He thought, perhaps, that she was still grieving Moody, and he knew only time would heal that particular pain.

"I'll let Gawain make his own revelations, yes, but I need to push to be on that team and he is the one to make the decision. So I will not back down on that matter, though I will be careful otherwise. We shall see what happens in tomorrow's meeting. If I am late again, do not worry. If it's going to be longer than an hour or two, I promise I will send an owl, but I suspect that a lot of late nights are in the future after this. You should go to the Order some more, if you can. I'm sure they'll need the assistance also." The thought of him sitting here, alone, just waiting for her, well, it rather broke her heart. So she did the best thing she could think and asked him to go where he was needed. The Order's meeting place was never really empty and, if an emergency should hit, at least he would be there to assist.

Now, business conversation over, and he clearly picking up on the fact that Dora wasn't okay, Tonks couldn't avoid the last bit of news any longer. As much as she'd love a dream world where she could wait to tell him, she respected him more than that. She loved him more than that, and he deserved to know. She fell oddly quiet at his question about if she was really okay. She almost didn't know how to answer. For a few heartbeats she looking anywhere in the room but his eyes. Her fingertips never left his side, though. Her other hand even stretched over, reaching her smaller fingertips to take hold of his palm. She swallowed tightly. She didn't know how to start.

"I... I am okay. I think. I mean. I'm not... sick. We're all upset. It... There..." She really didn't know how to broach the issue. Her eyes pressed tightly shut, forcing back an odd sting that pounded behind her temples. "There is something I need to tell you, Remus..." She began quietly. Her heart thundered in her chest. It almost stopped her throat, making it hard to continue with words.

"I wouldn't expect you to," he said, knowing fully well that once her mind was set on something, it was nearly impossible to dissuade her. His brows quirked when she told him not to worry about her--also an impossible task. "I'm sure there are," he said, thinking of the late nights to come. "And you're right. I have been helping, but it's a damn site harder than it's been, and I can't just go anywhere anymore." And when he did, he had to be careful.

He was fairly certain that someone had been directed to follow him; it was a feeling he recognized all too well from the past. His connection to Harry was no secret, and he suspected they were hoping that he'd lead them to Harry. Leading them to Order Headquarters would be just as bad.

Thinning his lips, he looked her over and wrapped his fingers around hers. Whatever was bothering her was important, and he felt a stab of fear as she began to stammer. His jaw clenched and he willed the tremor out of his voice.

"What is it, Dora?"

While she felt there was something more, and he mentioned it was getting harder to go to the Order, Tonks couldn't focus on that for the moment. She knew she had to get the news out while she had the courage and the time was ripe. He had to know. So, with trembling fingertips and racing pulse, she clutched his hand a bit tighter, took in a deep, shaking sort of breath, and spoke.

"Remus...I..." It took another breath, her eyes finally rising to meet his own, so she could see his immediate reaction, whether it be fear or elation or anger. She wanted to know, up front and honest. "I'm pregnant. We're going... going to have a baby." And there it was, those simple few words spoken as quiet as a whisper and yet resounding as loudly as a bomb. She said nothing else, letting him take in the news as she still held his hand.

Remus' breath caught in his throat. Pregnant? Was that--that is, he knew it was possible, but they'd never discussed having a child. He'd never imagined he might one day get married, but being a father was...he swallowed thickly.

"Really?" he whispered, even though he could see the truth in her face, her eyes. "God," he said a moment later, covering his mouth with one hand. "A baby."

They didn't need this. They were bringing a baby into the middle of a war. Dora...Dora would be carrying his baby. The offspring of a werewolf. He didn't know how that might affect the child--if it would share his affliction. He wasn't sure how he'd live with himself, bringing a child into a world of misery, as an outcast.

Tears pricked the corner of his eyes and he dropped his gaze to his lap. This was his fault. He'd put Dora in enough danger, marrying her, and now she'd be carrying his child, and lord knew how people would react to that, once they found out. She was in more danger than ever before.

He looked to her, briefly, studying her face, wishing he could be happy. He couldn't even tell if she was happy. "Are you," he started, and found he couldn't find the right words to express himself. "Do you...?"

There was a tiny part of her that wished he'd laugh, cheer, hug or kiss her, do something that told her this was a good thing. That he was happy. She wasn't just making him regret more and more than he had married her. Sadly, his response did not go near any of those things. She couldn't really tell what his response was at all. He looked as blank and indifferent as she had felt when the mediwitch at St. Mungo's confirmed her suspicions of the last week. She stared at him quietly, trying to figure out exactly what he was asking as she swallowed her own heart down her throat.

"Do I... what, Remus? Talk to me, please. I... I know we didn't plan this. But we... we love each other. Sometimes... sometimes that is enough. Sometimes it has to be enough." Nymphadora's voice croaked out quietly. She found herself blinking back tears she didn't even realize were there, but that stinging in her temples had finally released into moisture on her eyelashes. Her throat finally cut off her words again, not wishing to all out cry but she was so exhausted and scared that she couldn't entirely control herself.

Tonks finally just tightened her hand around his, not daring to let go. She loved him, he loved her, and somehow they could handle this. They had to, there was no going back now. She finally managed to whisper again, but the words were almost irrelevant, a shaken rambling instead of coherent ideas. "I... I thought... I went... took lunch off... Went to St. Mungo's... they... They said..."

What could he possibly say? he wondered, and lifted his head to look at her again. He wanted to tell her he was sorry, but he just couldn't. There was a very small part of him that was amazed that he was going to become a dad, and for that, he felt utterly guilty, and selfish.

"Do you want this?" he asked, and his voice cracked. "Tell me the truth, Dora. You know...you know what it could be."

He took in a gasping breath and looked down at their hands. "You know what this means. For you. If--when people find out, it'll be worse than it is now." She was strong, and he knew she'd say she could handle it, and that they loved each other, but he knew that she wouldn't see the big picture; she'd had no reason to, until now.

"My love for you isn't enough, Dora," he said. "It's made things worse. I've made this worse."

Tonks shook her head almost immediately, emphatically, a hint of panic crossing her pale features as he began to insist that he had made things worse. It had always been the struggle between them, his worry about making things difficult and limiting for her and the fact that she did not care. She loved him no matter what. Now this surfaced that struggle again, only worse than before, as the presence of a child made everything almost too immediate and their wedding rings supposedly bonded them forever.

Supposedly. Even now, she could feel him withdrawing again, and it threw her into worse terror than the thought of being a mother. "Remus, by Merlin, of course it's enough! Don't be... be silly. Don't be selfish. You haven't made anything -worse-. We are both -adults- who made choices. Those choices just had... consequences... far sooner than we expected them. But we are married. We are in love. We have food, and shelter, and warmth. Yes, it's dangerous times, but do you expect us to run from this!? What would have happened to Harry if his parents just gave up because their was a war on? Or Molly and Arthur? People have been having babies as long as their has been war and everyone has survived it just bloody fine!"

If he wasn't going to be the strong one in this matter, then she would have to be. Of course, she had several more hours to process what was happening to them both, so possibly she was able to take it all in easier than he right now. She blinked away her tears, forcing her courage to the sticking place as she took a deeper, stronger breath and continued, "We can do this, Remus. It's terrifying but... it's wonderful too. We can do this."

Don't be selfish.

The words nearly got a hollow laugh out of him, but it became strangled in his throat.

"My selfishness is what got you into this," he told her, not bothering to veil his bitterness. "You don't know--you don't know what it's like." He had been quite young when he was bitten, and the transformations had been frightening. To think of an infant going through the same thing, and knowing that it was his fault--his carelessness--he couldn't live with himself. He'd never dreamed of putting someone else through that much pain and suffering.

He broke a little, shoulders shuddering as he covered his face with his hand. Even if their child wouldn't inherit his affliction, it would be shunned for its father - something it couldn't even help.

"Love," he echoed, his voice a hoarse whisper. "James and Lily didn't know that Harry would suffer. Arthur and Molly's children are normal, with normal parents and father capable of supporting them. They are not me, Tonks. They are not my kind." He looked up sharply, meeting her eyes.

"It is terrifying," he agreed. "And the baby will suffer, I know it. If not because it's like me, then because I am its father." He turned away again, not wanting her to see the wretched look on his face. "I can't."

They would be better off without him.

Tonks' face fell as he turned the issue to something she didn't even think about -- his curse. She loved Remus for who he was, and she had always known him a werewolf. Though so much of society shunned him for such an identity, she did not. It made him the man she treasured. The thought of their child being somehow hurt by it hadn't even crossed her mind until now, that much is clear, her face turning into a quiet shock. She finally shook her head almost viciously.

"No, no... He, or she, will be better off with a father than with none. Werewolf or not! No one... no one who truly matters, none of the order, not Harry, not the Weasleys... no one who is good hearted and upstanding cares about you being a werewolf. If people would shun our child because of that then, dammit, I don't want those people to BE with our child! Please, Remus. Just be happy. Let's me happy. It was bad timing but... but this is a blessing. A gift in war. Let's see it as that." Tonks nearly begged those last words, her other hand coming over, trying to take his second palm, hold him with her on the couch and not let go.

"I love you, Remus Lupin, and I love our child." She tried to lean in to kiss him before he could protest more.

"I don't know," Remus said, thinking of the consequences. "I don't know."

He felt rather certain that a child with no father would be better off than a child with a werewolf for a father, if only because people would assume his or her father was normal. Normal. And that would only be if the child took after Dora. God, he hoped it did, and another part of him broke, just thinking of it; that there would be someone as lovely and beautiful as her coming into the world.

"Don't you see?" he asked, unable to understand how she was still pushing the issue, "It doesn't matter who's good-hearted! People who matter are on the Governing Board of Hogwarts! They hire employees! The only reason I was able to attend Hogwarts was Dumbledore, and he's dead! He was the only reason I had a steady job for a year! Dora, don't you see? Can't you see? The world is not run by good-hearted people. Even your parents - your parents didn't want you to marry me. What will they think?"

He wasn't sure he'd ever felt so conflicted before; he simply asn't able to see her pregnancy as a blessing. Her hands were warm against his, and yet he ignored them, stiff and unwilling.

"Don't," he said, when she tried to kiss him. He couldn't do it. He was so starved for love, but he didn't deserve it from her, not when he'd burdened her. "I can't. I'm going to make things worse. I'm--you shouldn't be with me."

Something inside her went cold when he refused her kiss, her hands going too still in their desperately tight grasp of his own. Tonks stared into his eyes, trying not to let her heartbreak clear, but she could practically feel it cracking within her chest. It was not supposed to end like this. It simply wasn't. She swallowed tightly, still not letting go of his hands as her mind raced in some efforts to find a response, anything to make him see sanity.

"Remus, I do not think the world could be any worse... than what I would face... if you left my side. I love you. We promised to each other. Sickness, health, rich, poor. Better -or- worse. It will be hard, but we made promises. Do not break your promise. I love you. I love this child. I know you love me. Don't... don't go back on the pledges we both made." Tonks would not beg him, her pride too much, but she would challenge him on his own honour and love -- things which she knew he had in abundance, no matter how much he hid them.

She refused to let any other tears fall, but the moisture clung stubbornly to the edges of her lashes as she stared at him through glassy eyes, searching for any sort of recourse, trying to find that one little ray of light and hope that said he would soften his conviction and remain in this marriage.

What could he say to breaking a promise? Or to loving her? It was because he loved her that he had to leave her. He had to; he just couldn't see any other way.

He was barely able to meet her eyes, and when he did, he wished he hadn't. She was so beautiful and amazing, and she was his. He didn't deserve her, not in the least.

"Don't say that, Dora," he begged her. "I know it's hard for you to understand, and I do love you." He meant it, with every bit of his heart, and that was why he knew he had to leave. He exhaled slowly, a long, shuddering breath, and then got to his feet.

"I just -- I won't ruin my child's life, or yours. You'll be better off without me. Stay with your parents. They know it's true."

And if his child was a werewolf, he was certain Dora would come to the same conclusion. She wouldn't understand once her baby went through the pain. She didn't know what it was like, to scratch and tear at yourself during the loneliest nights of your life.

He physically ached, knowing that he had to leave his wife, and his child. It had been a long time since he'd experienced love - and none that was quite the same as Dora's - but he couldn't see it ending any other way.

"It will be better if I go," he told her, and a bit more harshly than he would have liked, but he didn't want to break his resolve. He was doing this because he loved her. It was best.

Tonks shivered as he got to his feet, abandoning her on their small, dilapidated couch. She tried to keep his hands, but when he would not grasp back, what was there to truly hold? Her own hands trembled as she finally released his palms, not wanting to let him pull away, but she had to. She loved him too much to keep him a prisoner. He was a prisoner of his condition, of the ministry's hate, of people's fear. He would not be a prisoner of her love, no matter how sick it made her feel.

"My parents are wrong. The ministry is wrong, Remus. This is everything Dumbledore fought against. The reason the Order even exists, is so children like ours do not have to live in fear! You won't give up the fight, I know you won't. Why would you give up the very thing you're fighting for? Remus. Please... don't leave me. I don't know... what I'll do... without you." Tonks' voice cracked out quietly, but she knew she was losing the battle.

She could scream, fight, struggle, rant, rave, do everything possible to keep him there, but it would not help. She could see it in her eyes. He would slip out in the night if not now, he would not stay, no matter how hard she fought. She stood quietly before him, something inside her going very still and very cold as she waited for his response, hoping he would take that last chance. Hoping she was wrong.

His eyes swept the flat, the hodgepodge of furniture and the bright colors, all of which embodied Dora's eclectic, warm personality. He loved her, he did; he just couldn't stay and watch her realize what a disservice he'd done her.

"They may be wrong," he said quietly, "but I don't see this ending quickly." He didn't even know if it would truly end. "The Order won't stop my child from fearing me. It won't stop the child from taking after me. What will you do, if it does? What will you do when it changes? You won't be able to take care of it, and neither will I. I don't even know if Wolfsbane would work on an infant. Dora, you don't even know how it will affect your pregnancy! Did you ask? Did you tell the Healer?"

He didn't think she had, but couldn't look at her, not when she was begging him and saying she wouldn't know what to do without him. He didn't want to do leave, but he could see no other way of making this better for her. His presence would make things worse.

"You'll be better off," he said in a brittle voice. "Stay with your parents, where it's safe."

"You child will never fear you, Remus. Just as I don't fear you. Love is stronger than fear. And... if... If it is passed to your child, then he will need you all the more! Do you truly wish to leave him alone through this?! No, we don't know what is to come, or what will change, but we shouldn't be doing it alone! I can't... can't do this alone, Remus. Please." Tonks whispered faintly, taking one shaking step in his direction but not actually able to get the strength to go farther.

He had demolished her with his determination to leave. He had taken everything she loved, all she fought for, and ripped it from her heart. Now she stood empty, cold, and so very alone. She couldn't even find any more words, though tears finally broke their way through. The only last show of emotion from Nymphadora were the silent and steady streaks of saline down her ashen pale face. She couldn't move, could barely breathe, but she could cry. Tears were all she had left with him gone from her grasp.

He found it difficult to believe her. Love might very well be stronger than fear, but in his experience, it didn't last long.

"You won't be doing it alone," he told her, and shifted to look at the door. "Your parents will be there for you. They'll understand." They'll be relieved.

He forced himself to look at her, and blinked back tears as he did. He soaked in the mousy brown color of her hair and the tears running down her pale face. He knew she was hurting, but it would get better and she would understand. Her parents would see to that.

"I'm sorry, Dora," he said quietly, and then turned towards the door. He wasn't sure where he would go, or what he would do, but he'd been on his own with nothing before. It was better this way.

"Remus..." Tonks' voice crackled out quietly, the only thing she could think to say. She didn't have anything more she could say. She had run out of protests and promises. Apparently, none of it mattered. The only response she heard from him was the quiet opening of the door. And, a moment later, the click of it shut.

The shutting of that door ripped open her world. Where she had been locked in icy numbness, the soft click ripped everything free. She screamed. She had no other words, but she had passion and pain. It ripped from her throat in a sound primal and horrific. Before she knew what was happening, she fell to her knees, still screaming through the tears.

Tonks ripped off her wedding ring, tossing it at the door in the fit of emotion and pain. She didn't even see where it fell or hear the quiet clink that was drown in the cry of her voice. But the scream could not last. Soon, it dissolved into wracking, quiet sobs. She lay on her side, across the ground, curled into a tight little ball. She couldn't think, couldn't move, couldn't speak.

Her marriage was over. All she knew was pain and tears.
