Date: August 2nd 1997
Characters: George, Fred, Verity, and… Alicia Spinnet, ?
Location: 93 Diagon Alley
Status: Public
Summary: The Weasley Twins have done it again - Journals for All
Completion: InComplete

The sign in the window said Come One Come All. Fred was down helping stock the shelves of their latest invention. An advertisement was put in the Daily Prophet giving them even more publicity for the event to end all events. George was at the front of a now growing crowd of people spilling out into Diagon Alley.

Standing on a makeshift platform, George took his wand and touched his throat and said Sonorus. His voice was then lifted above the rest. "Ello, Ello, Come one come all to the event of a lifetime. Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer with our latest invention." Fred bounded out from the back of the store and came out with a leather bound journal. "We give you the most brilliant breakthrough in ages, a place to keep your thoughts, keep up with your friends thoughts, and of course write down all those little things that you need to pick up from the Weasley Wizarding Wheezes."

Though at first they sounded confused, George could hear a rumbling of approval. "For more information the directions are written in the front of the journals." The price was a sickle a piece but he could already see the silver coming his way. Hopping down off the platform, George stuck his wand to his neck saying Quietus and slipped inside as he saw the line forming behind him.

"Jackpot" he said with a clever smirk playing on his lips. George moved to help Fred and Verity as the shop became flooded with the curious.

Alicia had spent the morning sleeping in and had gotten up to go for a run and then head for the market. It was after eleven when she strolled down Diagon at a walk, still a bit sweaty, her hair pulled back in a half coming out pony tail as she drank a bottle of juice and juggled the string sack she brought her marketing home in.

There was a crowd outside the WWW, and she tried to look over the collective heads before eventually pushing her way through the crowd and getting inside.

Fred was surrounded by customers at the register, all holding what looked like little notebooks in various colours and offering up their money, so she looked at the display with interest before seeing another flash of red near the back of the store.

"Excuse me, do you have these in a leopard print?" she asked, hiding a grin as she tried to make her voice sound as vapid as possible

George had been down stocking the now empty shelves. 'As always The Weasley twins were the height of fashion', he thought to himself. The books couldn't stay on the the wooden planks long enough to make it seem like he was making a dent in the void that was his stock. "Fred, we may need to just get a bunch of boxes and leave them open."

What was the use of down stocking when the shelves would be empty in a second anyway.

"Leopard what?" George stood up from over a box with a face that said 'what in the hell are you talking about?'

That was of course until he turned and saw a welcomed sight, "Well Miss Spinnet for you I suppose we could make that happen." Moving up to her he wrapped his arms around her and spun her happily. "You have come to the right place for another brilliant Weasley invention." George put her back down and gave a goofy bow in the center of the store.

Alicia laughed as George bowed and she tried to assume a very regal expression. "Apprently I have. You two must be rolling in it at the rate these things are flying off the shelves."

She picked up a Lavender coloured one out of a box and smoothed the cover with her hand. "What is it? And is it going to turn me into anything I'll regret in the morning?"

"What can I say, brilliance like ours can't be contained by just one tiny little shop. We have to have the proud name of Weasley spread all over this city." George grabbed a poca-dot journal out of the box and smirked. Thumbing the page he took the Lavender one out of her hand and put it back in the box. "This one is for you," he knew it more suited her style.

"You don't need that lavender number." He grinned ear to ear, "It's the latest in hot communication. With this you can write to your mates and they can write back." He opened the front of the journal and showed her all it's uses, "Like say if you had a hot date and he wanted to write to you he could and you could write back."

George as always seemed to be basking in the glory that was the success of their latest invention.

"Really?" It reminded her a bit of the spell Hermione had put on their coins for the DA. "Some sort of augmented Protean charm then? With wards?" She looked at it with interest, reading the explanation as she took the journal out of his hands. It was with with red, orange, and yellow polka dots.

"Well, in that case I'll have to fill it and maybe buy a second," she teased. "Because you know I have nothing but hot dates night after night."

It would be a good way to communicate, and obviously people were liking the idea.

Maybe he had filched the idea off of Hermione in a why but he had to admit putting it on paper was all their's. George was thrilled that it was such a glowing success though, "Exactly love, it will be one of the most amazing sensation to go across the wizarding nation. Just wait."

He held up his own which was black and red spots with gold rings, around them, "Well I guess you will just have to write to me and we will see about getting that book of yours filled."

"Too many hot dates, I guess I am going to have to get my club out and start striking back at those trolls." He said bouncing his brows before slipping his journal back into his pocket and moving another box to the front of the crowd.

Turning back to Alicia he crossed his arms, "So what is this you only come to see me when we open another product?" This was of course only a bit of ribbing, he knew most of his mates were terribly busy.

"I'll have you know that Ang dates the trolls. I have to make do with the arseholes." Her lips curved up at the edges at that as she looked back down at the journal again, her hair slipping down over her shoulder.

"Well, I'm a busy girl. Work work and more work. But I'll stop by and see you some other time if you're going to be a baby about it."

She and George had always gotten along, having gone to the Yule Ball and all, but they'd never been anything more than just friends. It was always fun to tease him though, mostly because he teased back with such a vengeance.

"Oi! That troll happens to be my very attractive brother. I have never met anyone as handsome as he," he than leaned against one of the empty journal shelves. "Oh wait I have" he said gesturing to himself.

That was of course until he lost his bloody ear, not that he minded it terribly but now they could always tell which twin he was. It took away from the mystery and he certainly couldn't tease his mum anymore.

"You're bloody right I am going to be a big baby about it, I don't appreciate being ignored." That's when George put on his biggest pout, "I know Fred doesn't like it when you're not around either busy or not." He heard his brother call him for more journals. "Merlin I hope we made enough of them."

George grabbed another box and slid past Alicia to bring it over to front of the shop. "The busiest I have ever see us." He knew this was going to be a good haul.

Alicia wrinkled her nose at him and headed for the counter with the little book.

"Well, we'll all have to get toghether soon," she told him. "Till then I guess I'll keep track of you with this."

She paid Fred for the journal and slipped it into the bag with the rest of her groceries.

"When you hit your millions, don't forget me," she told George on the way out, giving him a little smile as she tried to squeeze through the crowd.

Angelina hadn’t been near enough to hear any loud announcements from the streets. She’d caught wind of the new invention going on the market in a conversation with Fred days prior and had promised to drop in and check it out. She hadn’t planned on being so drained though. Her trainer at in the Auror Department had decided they should do physical training most of the day. They put Quidditch practices under Wood to shame. She was certain every muscle in her body was aching but she was going to be damned if she didn’t keep her word.

The store was crowded when she made entry and she spied Fred and Verity ringing people up. She couldn’t spot George at first but when she did she approached him from behind covering both eyes with her hand. She didn’t shrink back over the hole in his head or the extendable ear she’d known he’d taken to wearing to try to cover it. She was getting used to it now.

“Guess who?” she asked finding a hint of a second wind enough to laugh a bit over it. She always managed to find some energy at the joke shop. She needed it to keep up with the boys though. They were such handfuls. She didn’t doubt George would know who it was. If she could keep the two of them separate they could keep her separate as well. “Guess right and I might purchase one of those journals. I have lots of things to write down.”

That was something that he didn't regret, giving up Quidditch practice with Wood. The other thing was his ruddy speeches. Deal Merlin if he never had to hear another Wood speech again he could die happy. They were some of the longest winded nonsense he ever heard but he generally told him that he did a good job. Nothing like lying to shut him up.

They were mates it didn't mean he wanted a lecture everyday. George was pleasantly surprised when two hands covered his eyes.

"Um let's see you don't smell like baked goods and guilt so it's not my mum," he pretended to really be thinking, "I don't smell broom polish so it's not Oliver", than he thought for a second and he sighed, "I want to say it's one of my better looking mates." Keeping his eyes closed her spun around in her hands, "Ello Ang" Opening his eyes he confirmed who it was. "Alrighty," he dug through his box of journals and found one with stripes that he thought was very Ang. "Here you go lovely," George's brow bounced eagerly.

Angelina laughed outloud. Between the comment about his mother and then referring to her as one of his better looking mates she couldn't help but be amused. Being told she was good looking wasn't anything new. She wasn't arrogant enough to think she was all that some of these boys liked to tell her that she was. She thought she was pretty normal in the grand scheme of things.

"Georgie, you're such a flatterer," she told him with a wide grin as she took the journal that he picked out. It really did look like something she'd picked out. She would have asked how he knew just what she'd want but they'd known each other for so long now she didn't really question it to much.

"Selling many of these fantastic contraptions?" she asked instead.

That question was ridiculous with how busy they were. In fact, she felt a bit guilty for compromising his time when there were crowds this thick. Verity and Fred probably could have used the help. No one ever said she wasn't selfish though. Talking to him for five minutes never killed anyone.

"Flattery my dear will get you everywhere." George replied honestly and without any waiver in his voice. When it came to telling her she was one of his better looking mates, he was fully honest.

Though she had been seeing Fred while in school, Ang still spent plenty of time with George and that in turn caused him to develop feelings. For a while instead of saying anything he buried them deep down inside, hoping that no one would notice. So far he was doing what he thought was a good job.

"Of course, have you ever know of the Weasley's selling a bum product? Never that is why people know they can come here for quality and they will enjoy it." He showed her his own with the spots and the interior had stripes. George always went against the grain what could he say.

He leaned against a shelf watching Fred act like a card behind the register. George chuckled, "He is at his finest today. If we bring anymore customer's in my brother may blow his top with excitement." George motioned at the line that still swirled outside the entrance. "It's a day like none have ever seen inside this alley, better than back to school shopping."

There was always a level of conflict when it came to George because she’d dated Fred for quite a while during their years at Hogwarts. It hadn’t exactly ended in the best of terms and while things were okay now there was a bit of hurt over it all. Fred was still her very best friend though. The problem was that George had always been there as her other close friend. You date one Weasley twin and you’re pretty much dating the other too. She and George had developed a special bond of the years. It wasn’t as easy as just letting things go how they would though.

Every time she came close to saying anything she thought about Fred and how awkward it would be. Maybe George would think the fact she had some feelings for him was weird. She was overall ignorant that any flirtation that might exist between them was anything more than that. It wasn’t as if he only flirted with her.

“Of course not,” she said with a grin, “You only sale the best. I can do nothing but offer a glowing review of all your products. I might have learned my lesson about being the test dummy on them though – the Wonder Witch line were the only things in this store that didn’t leave me with emotional and physical scars. You better keep me happy. I could sue.”

His journal was pretty wicked. She couldn’t help but think that as she examined it. It was very George. It went against the grain. She couldn’t help but be happy for them because they’d found what they were good at and stuck to it. These journals were going to be big. She just hoped the Ministry didn’t get hold of them and censor.

"Fred seems happy. I don't think I want to pull him out of his mood or distract him from his customers," she admitted with a gaze toward the register. "You'll tell him I came by so he won't get furious at me for missing such a record breaking day."

Tension that was there, George couldn't help but leave untapped. Fred was his best friend, he always was. So instead of wanting to go ahead with his feelings like a Weasley twin was custom to. George instead backed up and kept himself distanced as best he could.

But in the back of his mind, he knew he could be so much more. Though his loyalty for his brother seemed to kick him back to reality. It was just an innocent crush anyway right?

"Good, speaking of glowing reviews if you want to use your new journal for just that from time to time it's good business." George gave her a wink to show that he was only kidding. It wasn't like him to go long without cracking a joke or two. "You were our prettiest test dummy," he said without missing a beat.

He knew what he was good at, and this was not going to stop anytime soon. George and Fred had always had plans to make it rich, a poppers life was not one they wished to lead, well not any longer. They lived that way long enough with their parents and though they had a loving family sharing Charlie's old robes wasn't something he fancied on doing ever again.

"Of course love, whatever you want. I'll be sure to say you bought one our best products," George set to bring out another box of journals from the back to the sales floor. Ridiculous how fast they were going. He hoped they would have enough.

Angelina never let the compliments go to her head. It didn’t matter how many times she heard them though they always made her dark cheeks flush. She often wondered if there was any real truth to any of it. Beauty was a perception thing but she did wonder sometimes if George (or Fred… or Lee) really did think she was the prettiest of anything. She had a good head on her shoulders though. She tended to be level headed and not get caught up in all of that. If people liked her they liked her. If they didn’t it was there loss.

“Are we talking about a glowing review of the journals or a glowing review of the very fit gingers selling them?” she asked with a wicked grin. She knew he meant journals but that didn’t mean she couldn’t joke back. It was a flirty little joke but it didn’t matter and it was neutral enough that it didn’t touch into the danger zone.

She trailed behind talking to him. She probably should have just let him go back to work but she wasn’t done talking to him. He was busy though. She held her journal in one hand and stood at the door to the store room (though she knew she could have just gone in) if she wanted. ”You don’t need anything before I leave do you?” she asked trying to be careful in how she phrased it. “I could roll up my sleeves and help you shove a couple more loads out if you need it.” She wanted them to be successful and it was her job as a friend to at least offer.

If she wanted to occupy his time, it was fine with him. Surely Fred will rag on him later, but what did George care? If they weren't constantly ragging on one another or a sibling they just simply weren't happy or behaving normally.

Take Percy for instance, he was so buttoned up and proper if it wasn't for the twins knocking him down a few pegs over the year who would know what he would have turned out like. Not that he was much better at the moment, but that was a situation for later.

Fit? "Oh yes, we can certainly review either. Which do you think will bring more foot traffic, knowing that our products are ace or that there are two incredibly handsome and available gents running the place?" George proceeded to preen himself with the reflection of himself in a bowl of jellied eyeballs. "Hmm you really can't beat that eh?" He grinned at her as she followed him to the door.

The work will be there when she is gone, he enjoyed her company. "Nah love you don't need to lift a finger. Besides what sort of shop owner would I be asking the customers to help me?" Why was it always so ruddy difficult to find things in the back room. Verity was going to have a hissy fit when she saw it back there. "Honestly though I have it, you needn't worry about little ol' me."

“I shouldn’t keep distracting you,” she said after a long moment. She did want to stay and she wanted to chat. She always did. That was why she stayed over on the couch or took hostage one of their beds at least once a week. It wasn’t quite the same without the Common Room to hang out in. She actually missed being able to just walk down some stairs and be around the people she wanted to be around. It wasn’t so uncomplicated anymore.

Growing up wasn’t exactly a field day. She chose a responsible profession to train in. She went the sensible route instead of going after her Quidditch dreams. She worked an extra job to help pay the rent and to keep herself from starving. As much as her family loved her, they weren’t going to pay her bills. Sometimes she wanted the luxury of being of kid again though. Today was one of those days.

She wanted to blow off all her responsibilities and she wanted them to come along with her. She couldn’t ask and she wouldn’t though. She had to be the level headed one here. There would be other times for hanging around and chatting. Besides, it wasn’t like she didn’t know when the shop closed or how to break into the joke shop without getting hexed. “—It’s not like I don’t have the journal now. You can distract me at all hours if you want to and from a distance,” she said with a laugh, fingers training across a back line of product and straightening.

“I can’t just stand around and do nothing,” she told him with a laugh. “If you won’t let me help then I better go. I’d hate to get someone mad at you because he had to do all the work and you got to have all the fun today.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the proper cost of the journal. She wasn't about to just walk out. She wasn't going to wait in those lines though. She reached and put it in George's pocket like it was nothing. "Put that in the register later."

Something was going on at the Weasleys' shop. Melinda debated a bit about going in, but she hated being left out of things so she walked in instead of past the shop like she normally would do. It didn't look like everyone was excited about something stupid like those Snackbox things or the silly hats.

She saw a few flashes of color here and there, but thankfully it wasn't anyone turning into canaries or any of that rubbish. Slipping through the crowd, she reached for what everyone else was reaching for, snatching a pretty blue book off the shelf just out from underneath the hands of someone else. She gave them a little, insincere moue of apology before stepping back, book clutched to her chest. She had no idea what it was, but if they were this popular, she wanted it.

Flipping open the front cover, she scanned it quickly. Hmmm, very interesting. But would everyone be able to see what she wrote?

George brought out the last of the boxes. If they wanted the journals after this they were going to have to wait for the twins to make more. That would take at least a couple days to keep up with the momentum of these journals.

He saw a girl come in and grab a book out from under another. "Tsk tsk, that's not very fair." What did he care as long as she paid. However he knew that was a bit of a financial motive but it wasn't like they made these journals for kicks. You grab one, you want one, you pay for one that was the end all be all.

"Any questions?" George asked with arms crossed and a quirked brow.

Melinda looked up, surprised to find one of the twins - she had no idea which and didn't much care so long as he didn't give her something to make her sprout feathers - talking to her.

"Well, I got there first. It's not my fault I'm faster, is it?" she asked, giving him a little smirk as she shrugged her shoulders. "And yes, I do have questions. If I were to buy this, could I charm things so only those I wanted could see it? And what about seeing only those I want to see?"

Pity she didn't like his products, and it was very good she didn't mention to him. Because if she wants to know what it's like to sprout feathers all she has to do is say the word and he will be sure she is singing for the birds.

"Uh huh," he said shaking his head. "Of course, you wouldn't want people knowing all of your tricks and skills to taking items out of the hands of others right?" George picked up trash from off the floor and put it inside a box that once carried journals. "If you don't want to see it you will have to either ignore it or get yourself a good hex to block them. Mostly however you just ignore what you don't want to see." He said with a shrug.

"Of course I wouldn't. That'd limit my effectiveness when there are sales on at Twilfit and Tatting's. It gets downright vicious in there, you know," she said, flashing him a smile. She nodded at his answer. That made good enough sense.

"And what about if I want to amke sure others can't read what I wrote? Hex it to certain people?" She frowned. "And do you have suggestions on which hexes work best or is it a free-for-all?"

Her charmworkw asn't awful, but she didn't trust herself against a good, concerted effort should someone want to see what she'd written.

"Oh and we definitely don't want that," George chuckled and hopped onto a counter top. Fred and Verity were finally getting the line down, and taking names and numbers of people who were interested in the next wave of journals. "It would be like us giving away our secrets, it just doesn't have to happen."

Laughing lightly, "Precisely, you know you are a lot smarter than you have been letting on." A joke, of course. This was a joke shop afterall. You don't come into a joke shop expecting news on the ministry. "Just your basic private hex will do. Trust me it will get easier as time goes on, like second nature. Fred and I have been working on them for quite sometime."

Charms was always a forte of the twins. So he couldn't help but feel like it's second nature.

Melinda's perfectly plucked brow raised. "I've been giving off the impression that I'm not all that bright?" she asked, her tone going a little sharp. Hmph. He was lucky she wanted to buy this stupid journal thing, or else she might throw it at him. "Don't you know that you're supposed to flatter your customers? That makes them want to come back."

She did manage to nod at his explanation, though. "Well, they seem quite popular. I suppose I'll get this one, then."

Snickering George shook his head, "Well if the shoe fits lass," he hopped off the counter and proceeded to straighten the mess that became the shop. It would take a little time with a wand but too many people were around for him to start shooting spells without having to face the consequences of a misfire.

"Lighten up, it's a joke shop. If you wanted to be where things were dull and comfortable we could have brought you to the morgue in St. Mungos. People are always dying to go there," he fixed up some of the Canary cremes.

Fred started waving him over, "Sounds good," he nodded, "I'm coming I'm coming." George shifted his stance, "Lovely chat, time for me to get back to work." George bounded back behind the counter and helped Fred run register.

All right, so she really didn't like him. "I should tell your father that you called me stupid," she muttered, more to herself. Honestly, how had someone like Mr. Weasley fathered the twins? They'd probably been dropped often, as children.

She groaned a little at his joke. "Oh, you're too punny," she said, lips twitching a bit. She had a soft spot for puns herself, but she wasn't about to let him know that. It wouldn't do to encourage this one.

"Yes, it was lovely." As she watched him retreat, she turned to the nearest shelf. While she was there, she should look around. Merlin only knew when she'd bother to come in again and maybe there'd be something in here for a Christmas gift for Bess. She'd like this type of thing.
