Wiping down the counter, Tom looked over the assembled crowd. Hardly fit to be a called a crowd. People were staying away from Diagon these days. Tough times, tough times. He shook his head as the Prophet owl swooped in and landed on his previous clean bar. Bloody thing always shat on his bar. He was sure it did it on purpose.

Taking the paper and opening the till for a few knuts to put in the bird's foot pouch, he fumbled as he saw the headline. Blinking, he reread it, just to be sure he'd read it properly. His eyesight was going, so it was possible he'd read it all wrong. But no, the letters and the words stayed the same. Well, that was interesting.

At the impatient peck of the owl, he glared at the thing and shoved the payment into the pouch. The bird took flight again, nearly battering him with its wings as he unrolled the newspaper.

"Oi! Oi! The lot of you, listen up!" he called, raising his voice to be heard. Everyone settled fairly quickly. "Evening Prophet's here. Says that Minister Scrimgeour's resigned. Fellow by the name of Thicknesse took his place. Pius Thicknesse, it says, Head of the Magical Law Enforcement."

As the murmurings started, he sighed and glanced at the bar. Buggering bird had mucked it up.

Melinda had been having a nice (if the word could be applied to fish and chips, which she really wasn't sure it could), quiet dinner in the corner. She had a book she'd gotten from the library and was engrossed in the heaving bosoms and throbbing manhoods when that little man behind the bar had called for their attention. Sighing, but still putting down the book, she listened.

Thicknesse? Really? The man was spineless. She'd seen him in meetings and such with Mr. Weasley, when she'd been tapped to take notes, and he seemed like a blathering idiot. Why would Minister Scrimgeour appoint him?

Well, Minister I-Look-Like-a-Hairy-Lion had resigned. That was certainly interesting, because Adrian usually at least tried to keep his ear to the ground and he'd heard nothing about the man considering resigning. He'd heard of Thicknesse, too, and none of it had had been good enough to give him faith in the man as the Minister of Magic.

But whatever, as long as he didn't cancel Quidditch, Adrian was just fine. He wasn't quite sure what he would do if he wasn't playing, he thought as he raised a hand, approaching the bar. Tom slid him a pint and he handed his money across the counter before turning and looking around the pub at its occupants. Perhaps some of his mates were around.

Oh, and would you look at that. Not only was sweet little Melinda Bobbin sitting all alone at the corner table, she was reading one of those trashy bodice-rippers Natalia liked to keep lying about.

"Fancy meeting you here," he drawled, smirking at her as he approached. "Mind if I sit?"

Melinda sighed as Adrian Bloody Pucey approached. Brilliant. Marking her page and stuffing the book into her purse, she rolled her eyes.

"Would you care if I said yes?" she asked tartly, raising an eyebrow. He was enough to put her off her food, she thought as she reached for a chip. Maybe she could get him to pay for her dinner, though. She flashed him a smile. "But sure. Sit."

	Sliding into the seat across from her, Adrian took a long pull from his pint. "Not particularly, no," he admitted. Really, she shouldn't be so uptight. So he'd not been Mr. Relationship. Bastard. How had she not seen it before? Really, she had to wonder about herself sometimes. Why hadn't anyone pointed out to her that he couldn't settle down with one girl if his life depended on it?

"Oh the usual. Work, blokes, friends. What about you? What are you doing with yourself these days?" Other than shagging anything that moved, of course. It'd be crass to say that, though, so she only thought it. It'd be too much to hope for that he'd picked up Occlumency along the way.

She really was a pretty thing. If she wasn't so uptight...although he had to wonder if she really was or if that was just what he'd seen. Not that it particularly mattered to him other than that he was curious by nature.

"Playing Quidditch," he said triumphantly. "Falmouth Falcons, first-string Chaser." Ha. The best part was definitely the groupies. Especially the really fit ones.

	So she'd been right about shagging anything that moved. "Oh, that's right. You play. I forgot about that," she said airily, as if the fact had slipped her mind. For once, Roger had popped into Diagon Alley, after practice. Although only a reservist at the moment, Roger had still learned to wear a cap and sunglasses, just in case. Making his way through the Alley, Roger headed toward the Leaky entry. He didn't normally head into Diagon Alley, having a perfectly good pub in Montrose, but as it was Saturday, he had decided for a little change in pace. Heading through the entrance, Roger made it past the brick wall and into the establishment.

Once indoors he whipped off the sunglasses and found himself a seat. Were it not dark inside, Roger would likely have left them on, but the shadows were just right. Finding a seat at the bar, Roger ordered himself a beer and looked around to see if anything else was to interest him. It wasn't long after Roger arrived that the owl had arrived.

Well, that bloody figured. He'd thought the man had a little more mettle than your average politician, but it seemed he was as bad as the last one, not one of them capable of sitting still and seeing matters through to the end. Taking a drink of his beer, Roger frowned into it. He had no idea what Thicknesse was like, but he was sure he was equally useless.

After leaving Adrian, Melinda made her way to the bar. She could use another drink, she decided. And it wasn't as if she had to go in to work tomorrow. Monday would be soon enough, especially since the Ministry was all anyone seemed to want to talk about tonight.

Slipping onto a stool, she leaned against the polished bar and looked down the expanse of wood to try to catch Tom's eyes. He was busy reading the bloody newspaper. She sighed loudly.

Roger looked up and over as he heard someone sighing loudly. A slow smile curved on his lips as he realised who the person was. Turning toward her, Roger took a drink from his glass then placed it back a second later. It had been a while since he'd seen Miss Bobbin, with school having only let out recently, and he was rather pleased to see a familiar face.

"You know, love, I don't think sighing loudly will get his attention," he said with a chuckle and a shake of his head before he raised his hand in the direction of the bartender. "Oi. A drink for the lady, please, Tom."

Melinda blinked at being addressed though her lips curved into a smile. Roger Davies looked juzt as scrumtious as he had during school. Perhaps more so with that hint of five o'clock shadow on his jaw.

"Thank you, Roger. It's good to see you. Work treating you well?" What did he do again? Damn, she should have taken notes the last time they were all talking about the Ravenclaw Alumni. She was sure someone had mentioned him - Cho, perhaps?

"Taken any bludgers to the head lately?" Cho was quick to tack onto the end of Melinda's question as she sidled up on Roger's other side. "And where's my drink or do I have to pull out the puppy-eyed pout?"

It had been far too long since she'd seen Roger and he was looking far too well for his own good. It might be time to take up her self appointed duty of keeping his ego in check while amusing herself at his expense. Merlin knew that she needed a source of amusement.

Leaning around him, she said, "evening, Mel."

"Work is going quite well, how about you?" Roger said to Melinda before looking over his shoulder at the newcomer. "Not lately, no, but I imagine some day I will and you shall be very upset for having suggested it, Miss Chang," Roger responded with a wink at Cho.

"As for your suggestion, I do believe you owe me at the very least a pout, and a hug if you want a drink" Roger added without blinking an eye and a straight face. He turned back around and winked at Mel. "Mel here flashed me, that's why she got a drink, right love?"
