RP: Hestia comes clean
Date: 14 September 1997, evening
Characters: Hestia Jones, Petunia, Vernon, and Dudley Dursley (YES!)
Location: Safehouse
Status: Private
Summary: The Dursley home was ransacked on Thursday, and Hestia finally brings herself to tell the family.
Completion: InComplete

For the weekend, things had been rather quiet around St. Mungo's. Normally, Hestia would have been grateful for the time to herself around the hospital, but the idle time had given her mind time to wander and worry about the events of the previous week.

The Dursley's home had been searched and nearly torn apart, and that was something that she couldn't keep from them for another day. Mrs. Figg, who lived a few streets away from them, said that she nearly missed the commotion, but she was lucky to be out and about that day(chasing after one of her cats, no doubt) to witness the group of Ministry 'officials' exiting the residence. Hestia had made time that week to visit the property to assess the damage. She wasn't sure how wise it was to visit the house, but hopefully Death Eaters weren't watching the place too closely. If they were, perhaps she could simply pass for a curious muggle.

"Good evening, I'm back," Hestia said before she quickly replaced her wards around the safehouse. She was tired from spending the day at St. Mungo's, but she knew what she had to do. "I've got a bit of news to share with you," Hestia announced as she secured the back door. Hopefully they hadn't noticed a great change in her behavior since Thursday, but if they had, they were about to receive an explanation.

While Dudley had come to a certain appreciation of Potter's world and of his cousin himself, that didn't mean that he like either. He didn't like being trapped in this place. He didn't like not being able to see his friends.

He certainly didn't like being reduced to reading for entertainment. And not even proper comic books. Actual books with nary a picture in them.

When Miss Jones came back, he looked up hopefully. Maybe she brought more biscuits.

Petunia had been fussing around the safehouse. Really, this whole ordeal was both wretched and inexcusable. They could have put them up in the Savoy for goodness sake. They could fly on broomsticks but not get a family a decent hotel room? There wasn't even a place for her to make Dudders his favorite Bikkies with the little jam thumbprints in them, and he did love them so.

And then there was the matter that they were being held prisoner for their "safety". Held prisoner by who? Wizards that was who. Terribly magic using wizards protecting them from other wizards. It was untenable that was what it was. And these people that were keeping them. The girl was alright, but the strange little man kept eying them in the oddest way. It made her very nervous.

"I do hope you are going to tell us that we are moving somwhere more suitable," she said. "And with a proper bath. Poor Dudders misses his Mr. Quackers something terrible, don't you dear?" She sat on the arm of Dudley's chair and smoothed his back with her hand.

Vernon's eyes narrowed behind his newspaper, but only after flicking up to check the time on the clock on the wall. They could never count on this woman to be on time, not that his expectations were high, or that he had expectations at all, because he'd be the first person to tell you that he didn't. Obviously, those types couldn't be counted on for anything. What's-his-face-Diggle was a few bricks short of a load, though, and this Jones woman was hardly reliable. Healer. Ridiculous. If she even came near his family with that stick of hers or new age crystal ideas, he was going to pack up his family and take a holiday to see Marge.

He missed Marge, too. And Grunnings. He was not particularly happy about turning in his leave of absence, nor did he like having to tell Marge that he'd taken a temporary position in Oviedo, Spain. Dudley was "studying" at an English school there, while he got a new branch of Grunnings running steadily, and the only thing that worked in their favor was that Marge hated the Spaniards. She would not be visiting them any time soon.

"What is it, then?" he grumbled from behind the paper. "Has He-Who-You-Must-Not-Know-Who been offed, then? Head on a pike? Did the boy live?"

"If there were more suitable places that had adequate security, a move might be possible, but for now, it's out of the question. It's a risk that we simply can't chance right now," Hestia explained. She was sure that she'd explained this over and over to them, but she would do it once again. "There are sacrifices that we all have to make right now," Hestia added. It wasn't as if this was the best situation for her either.

"I don't know why you'd bother to ask after Harry," Hestia began, but she stopped herself from snapping too harshly at Vernon. "There haven't been developments regarding You-Know-Who, not anything good for us, but He has grown more bold. Your home on Privet Drive was searched this week," she finally said.

Hestia breathed deeply. It wasn't her fault that their home was ransacked, but she was the one that was delivering the bad news. "I'm sorry, I wasn't able to closely examine the property, it's probably being watched, but I looked about what I could. The outside appears to be relatively normal, so your neighbors probably won't note any changes, but the inside was quite...chaos."

Vernon made a displeased noise from behind the paper again. Not moving. That meant they were stuck in this ruddy spell hole for a while longer. And the women had the audacity to speak of sacrifices. It was a sacrifice taking in Petunia's nephew, but he'd done it, and now look where it had got him, living with a couple of nutters in the middle of nowhere.

His face twisted nastily when the Jones woman chastised him for asking after the boy. He could hardly be blamed for wanting to know whether or not Harry'd expect to be invited to Christmas dinners from now on. (He wouldn't, if Vernon had anything to say about it, incidentally.)

"Now see here," he began, snapping the paper down from his face. "I--," he paused, just then registering what else she'd said.

"What do you mean, searched?" he barked. "Chaos?" He could feel his blood pressure rising, knowing that a whole lot of mad kooks had been rifling through his things. His mustache quivered as he fixed her with a beady look.

"I assume that they were looking for things that belonged to Harry, things that might lead them to where he is right now, or something that might tell them what he's doing," Hestia said as she removed her dark cloak and hung it from one of the pegs in the kitchen.

"I'm terribly sorry that this happened, but there's only so much that we can do at the moment," she explained. She was sorry that their home had been searched, but at least it hadn't been completely destroyed the way that Diggle's had. Hestia worried for her own flat, even Viktor's now, but there was little that could be done to stop the Ministry. "Chaos might've been a bit strong, but whoever searched your house did a thorough job."

"Can you think of anything that Harry might have left there at Privet Drive? Anything that might have been very important to him?" Hestia hated asking, but she needed to know. The Order needed to know if anything had been uncovered by the Ministry or Death Eaters, and they needed to know quickly.
