RP: Mayhem Abounds
Date: 10 September 1997
Characters: Verity De Luca, Michaela De Luca, others?
Location: WWW
Status: Public- quite. Come on people, you know you want to. Just ping!
Summary: Verity has to bring Michaela along to work with her. And watch a mischievous two year old. In the joke shop.
Completion: InComplete

Verity's father was working. Her mother had a charity tea. Callum was off doing something or other that Callum did. And the house-elves were busy. Apparently her Mum thought Spring Cleaning in September was a good idea. And so no one else could watch Michaela during the day, and so now she was at the joke shop with Verity.

Verity loved her daughter. She really did. But having a two year old in a place where things routinely exploded was not a good idea.

"Mickey! Don't touch that. Come here. Sit here, color. Mick- I said don't touch that!"

It was time.

Katie had put it off long enough; ever since she had moved into Diagon two weeks earlier, Katie had thought about going in to see the twins' shop. Or, more specifically, to see the twins themselves.

Being a year younger than most of her school friends, she had had a year "off" wherein she hadn't seen any of them. But catching up again with Angelina and Alicia was different; they were girls. And they understood her. But she had lost contact with the twins, and Katie's favorite thing in the world to do was avoid an awkward situation. And it was bound to be a bit awkward, at least for her. Especially after their final year...

But it was time. Katie needed to see them, before... well, she didn't want to think about that. Alicia had filled her in on the general going-ons of the twins, so she knew... maybe she shouldn't take them being there for granted.

So, Katie thought to herself, pushing open the door to the brightly -colored but still mildly small shop and stepping through the threshold, here goes.

Michaela had gotten into the color-changing lollies when Verity hadn't been looking (she was ringing up a customer) and now her hair was a bright shade of turquoise, which clashed horribly with her light pink smocked little dress. It was sort of cute, though, and Michaela seemed to like it, so Verity let it go. For now.

Plus Mickey hadn't called her Mummy yet. Which was good. She was sort of on edge about that happening here today. Because no one knew, and she sure as hell didn't want them finding out this way.

The door opened, and Verity looked up from where she was trying to get the till drawer to shut. "Katie Bell, right? It's great to see you! Glad be done with school?"

Hmm, should she get the lads? She really didn't want to get exploded, maybe she shouldn't go back there.

Katie was busy observing the shop with a sense of pride she had rarely felt before, usually only after winning a big match or finishing a semester with good marks. This... was incredible. It was everything she had always imagined WWW would end up being, and much more. Grinning widely, she couldn't help it!, she looked up finally as someone spoke her name, a bit surprised.

"Verity." She beamed again. Of course it was this Verity, it suddenly dawned on her, that Alicia had mentioned before. They had gone to school together, after all... and she was just now putting two and two together? Who else would it have been?

"Yeah, yeah." Katie nodded absently, to answer Verity's questioning of her identity. "Yeah! You have no idea how glad I am to be out of school, really."

And awkwardness began to ensue, at least in Katie's mind. She really didn't know what she was doing there, or what to say next (she was always a bit awkward among acquaintances at least), so she continued to observe the shop bemusedly as she made her way up to the front counter where Verity stood. "And yourself? How have you been?"

Bell was nice enough, for a Gryffindor. Although Verity had to admit she couldn't exactly hold up a claim on disliking Gryffs, because of Ali. And Fred and George. And Bell too.

Okay, so she didn't hate Gryffindors. She was such a bad Slytherin. Really. She was perky, and kooky, and adorable. She should've been in fucking Hufflepuff. Except then what would she have done with her evil side?

"I'm doing well. Been working here since I left school, and although my parents would love for me to do something that uses my NEWTs I just like working with Fred and George too much. Couldn't possibly leave."

Katie had never understood how such a perky, friendly Slytherin could exist. Then again, most of the Slytherins she had known were mentallers, or huge brutes who always ganged up on her petite form on the Quidditch pitch, or you know, both. But Verity? She had always liked her, for the most part, simply because she had never given her a reason not to.

"Yeah, they're... yeah." Katie grinned again, in complete agreement. She'd be the same way if she got to hang out here all day, working with the twins.

She lowered her voice a bit at this point, but not enough to make the conversation lose its casual tone or pick up an air of seriousness at all. "How are they doing, by the way? I haven't seen them since... since they left school, actually."

Mickey toddled over, hands trailing all over everything and then reached up for Verity, demanding, "Up." Her hair was still vivid and bright and Verity shook her head, rolling her eyes.

"They're doing all right. Very invested in the shop, and they still act the same as ever. Still, their brother- Ron- has spattergroit, so I'm sure they're worried about him. Or just taking the piss. Or both," she said, with a smile and a shrug.

Somehow... somehow Katie didn't believe that. In fact, a very, very large percentage of Katie didn't believe that. But. Que sera, sera. She probably didn't even want to know the truth, if it were just a story the twins were prone to spreading at the moment. So. "Definitely both." She agreed after pretending to think about it for a moment, grinning playfully.

"Sister?" She finally asked after a moment, smiling kindly at the toddler, bright hair and all.

"Mmhm," Verity murmured noncommittally, stepping away from the counter so that Michaela couldn't grab the Pig-Latin quills that were in a canister by the till. "Everyone else was busy today, so she got to come to work with me. It's been...an experience, as you can see," she added, gesturing to Mickey's hair.

"She's going to be running around like a maniac all day."

Katie couldn't help but giggle a bit at the curious little girl as she tried to grab at the canister, nodding in inevitable agreement at Verity's words. "Well then, she should fit in just fine here, yeah?"

She took another quick glance around the shop, turning slightly toward the open storefront with wide eyes, before turning her attention back to Verity. "I just... thought I'd stop in, since I hadn't. This place is... amazing." Katie still couldn't believe what the twins had done so quickly, become so successful and all. "Have you worked here long?"

"Apparently," Verity said dryly.

"Since I left school. They needed the help and I needed a job. And yeah, this place is absolutely incredible." She shrugged, bouncing Michaela a little. "What about you? Any idea what you're going to do?"

Katie shook her head nonchalantly, leaning her side against the counter lightly and looking over her shoulder at Verity and Michaela in order to speak, letting out a melodramatic exhale.

"Not at all, actually... I'm working over at Whizz Hard for the time being, but." She scrunched up her face a bit, shaking her head slightly. "It's not really my cup of tea. It's just so I can use the flat above the shop until I get enough money to find a bigger place."

She kind of wanted to ask more about the twins. Most specifically she wanted to know if they were there. But she couldn't find the words. She half wanted to leave and avoid the confrontation altogether, but seriously. She was already inside. She turned back fully to the counter, twirling one of the Pig Latin quills through her fingers absentmindedly. "How long do you think her hair'll stay like that, then?" She asked bemusedly, grinning at Michaela's unnatural hair again.

"Whizz Hard? That sounds interesting, what do you do there?" She grinned, leaning back against the counter. "Ooh, you live in Diagon? Is it nice? I still live with my parents, in our townhouse in Muggle London."

Tickling Michaela's sides, she chuckled. "Probably an hour or so. She didn't eat much of the lolly- I got to her in time to get it away before that happened."

"I blow things up. We actually have a lot in common." Katie spoke with a matter-of-factly air, before rolling her eyes and grinning in spite of herself. "Kidding. It's a book shop. And it's no Flourish & Blotts, let me tell you."

In response to Verity's second question, she shrugged vaguely, reaching up to run her fingers through her hair absentmindedly. "It's okay. Diagon is definitely not Kenmare - where I'm from." she added. "I've only been here for a few weeks, though, still getting settled in."

"Ooh, book shops are fun. Got anything interesting in lately?" she asked curiously.

"I've wondered what it would be like to live here. I'm thinking of looking for a place around Diagon somewhere if or when I finally decide to move out." If. Because she wasn't going to move out without Mickey, but...she had to figure out how to have Mickey on her own. Just the two of them.

There was no earthly reason for Caleb to ever darken the doorstep of those damned ginger twins' shop. Except, it would seem, for his twin horrors (otherwise known as Charisma and Cordelia Warrington, eight years old) to send him matching Howlers demanding color changing lollies.

When he figured out which house elf allowed itself to be bullied into enchanting those letters, there was going to be a new head mounted on the wall.

He strode into the shop, head held high and the Hit Wizard patch on his robes in an obvious place just above his heart in an attempt to make the best showing possible. And hopefully to make it back out of the shop without sprouting feathers or tentacles or something.

The last thing he expected though was for a colision of the knee-high and blonde variety.

Michaela was obviously still on a sugar high from that lolly, though her hair was no longer turquoise, and she was running around the shop like a maniac. Thankfully, no one was in at the moment, and so Verity could chase her around without worrying about beheading any customers.

Except that a customer had just entered the shop and Michaela had smacked right into his knees and was sitting on the ground wailing now. Verity swooped in, scooping her up and cuddling her close and holy fuck that was Caleb.

"Um. Hi. Sorry. She had a lolly."

Caleb's stern expression softened into something approaching a smirk. "Sugar and toddlers is a dangerous combination, Miss De Luca. But you'll sleep well tonight after chasing her."

He glanced around the store. Not a redhead in sight. Perfect. "So you're working for the Ginger Menace and babysitting. I hope you're getting hazard pay, Verity." The wailing had stopped and pair of wide eyes was staring at him from behind a fall of blonde hair. "What's your name, young lady?"

"Menaces. There are two. And yes, I get paid well enough. Plus, I like the hazards. They keep me on my toes," she said with a grin. Maybe this would be easier than she'd thought.

"And she got into the lollies when I wasn't looking. Customer was trying to pay. Can't believe my mum made me bring her in and watch her today," she said with a slight sigh, trying to play up the 'big sister' role instead of acting like a worried mum. Really. Michaela was fine. No bumps or even the tiniest hints of bruises.

"I'm Michaela," her daughter suddenly decided to pipe up shyly, both smiling at Caleb and trying to hide behind her hair. Hmm. She would need a trim soon.

"Little ones are good at knowing exactly when your back is turned."

Cute kid. He could see a lot of Verity in her little sister. Caleb summoned a smile for her and fished out one of the galleon-sized buttons with the rotating image of the MLE logo that he kept on hand to distract the little ones on the rare occasion he dealt with a child. "My name is Caleb." He tapped the button with his wand and the image began shifting between the MLE logo and Micheala's name. "This is for you. See, it has your name on it." He very much doubted that she could read, but kids seemed to eat that kind of thing up.

Oh, fuck. Why did he have to come in here and be cute with her child? Why?

Michaela took the button, staring at it with wide eyes, and then looked up at Verity. "On me," she demanded, not even bothering to say please, just patting her dress with her little fingers and then waving the button at Verity.

"Please."

"Pwease."

Verity raised her eyebrows, balancing the little girl on her hip with one arm and trying to fasten the button on with the other. It took a few tries, but she got it and Michaela grinned. "Can you tell Mr. Warrington thank you, Mickey?"

"Fank you."

Verity chuckled, looking back up at him. "Thanks, Caleb."

He clicked his heels softly together and bowed his head properly in acknowledgement of Michaela's thanks. "You are most welcome, young Miss De Luca."

Straightening, raised an eyebrow at Verity. "I am on a life and death mission. The girls have assured me that if I do not send them the required goods that my life would be worth very little." He grinned, a tad sheepishly. It had been a running joke in Slytherin house that the only thing that terrified Caleb Warrington was his baby sisters. "I don't suppose you could point me to those color-changing lollies."

Mickey started wriggling and Verity put her down, watching her carefully as she scampered off. Yeah, she was fine.

"Life or death, eh? Well, the lollies are over here, conveniently placed so that prying two year old hands can get into them," she said with a grin, linking her elbow with his and half-marching him to the right shelf. It was nice being around him again.

"What colors do they like? Some are swirled, too."

"Weasley marketing strategy? Put the sweets at house elf level to draw in the little ones in a 'your kid ate it, you bought it' ploy?" The Weasley twins were clever, he'd give them that.

Caleb shook his head. "I have no idea. Bright and clashing, would be my guess." What did he know about the workings of eight year old female minds?

"Exactly."

Hmm. Bright and clashing. Verity crouched down, plucking through the bins, and within moments had a selection of six lollies, two pink, two orange, and two a violently bright chartreuse. If there were two girls, there needed to be an equal amount of each color so that there wouldn't be fights.

"Here. How's that?"

"That should satisfy the holy terrors. Thanks, Verity."

Caleb neatly summoned the trick wand from Michaela before she could do more than make it blow a few dozen irridecent bubbles. Before she could do more than draw breath to protest, he set the bubbles to dancing in a conga line around her. That was a cunning distraction, if he did say so himself. He handed the trick wand to Verity. "You seem to have your hands full. If you'll just ring me up, I'll get out of your hair." He raised an eyebrow at her. "Unless you'd like me to distract your sister for a while and let you catch your breath."

Oh, that was adorable. The way he had stepped in so neatly and distracted Mickey before she could start wailing- it almost made her wonder...But no, she needed to focus right now.

"Come on, I'll ring you up and you can get out of here." She walked back to the counter, scooping up Mickey on her way. "Nah, she's fine. Anyway, I'm sure you have places to be." And she sort of felt like leaving Mickey with him would be weird.

Ringing up the lollies, she gave him the total.

Remus had received a very cryptic message from Arthur today; it was something about the Weasley family being subjected to Ministry inquiry, but Arthur had sounded so harried over the whole idea that the details weren't clear. Concerned, and knowing he wouldn't be able to shake the feeling until he knew exactly what had happened, he'd visited the Burrow, only to find no one there. He'd found the same at Shell Cottage, and by the time he reached Diagon, he was wondering if the entire family had been called in.

It was a sobering thought. He recalled his conversation with Fleur and Bill - their discussion of Snape, and how the Ministry likely knew the older Order member's identities. He could only hope that the Ministry had nothing on which to base charges, and that the Weasleys would be released soon. He walked down a strip of shops, noticing that more of them were boarded up, and that some of them had completely changed ownership. With a sigh, he stopped into the only brightly colored shop in the whole area: Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.

He was greeted by a myriad of sounds and colors, but he was less interested in that and more interested in whether or not the twins were in. Spotting a girl in magenta robes, he approached her and gave her a faint smile. He recognized her; she'd been his student, at Hogwarts. He couldn't recall her name right away, however, though he thought she'd been a Slytherin. That was interesting, he thought, but knew better than to put a stigma on Slytherins, particularly since he'd been subjected to stereotypes, himself.

"Excuse me," he said, "I'm looking for Fred or George. Are they in?"

Verity looked up from where she was peering down behind the counter- Michaela was finally calm and coloring in the floor next to her feet and she could breathe. For now, anyway.

"Hi! Professor Lupin! How have you been?" she asked, smiling brightly. He'd been the only Defense teacher she'd had that she actually liked- Moody had been okay, but he freaked her out. "No, I don't think so? I haven't heard any explosions in a bit, anyway. I'm in charge out here today. Did you need anything specific that I could help you with?"

So they'd also been called in. He wondered how long they'd been gone, and if it was worth waiting for the twins to return, or if he should move along somewhere else.

"Remus." Remus smiled a bit more, always a little pleased when someone greeted him so kindly. "Please, call me Remus. I'm no longer your teacher, ah..." He lifted his brows, hoping she might remind him of her name.

Shaking his head when she asked him if he needed something, because he didn't really need anything, much less have the money to purchase it, he cleared his throat. "Nothing specific, no. I had a question for the twins, but it can wait." His eyes flickered down to the something moving near her feet, and he noticed a tiny blond head working hard at something on a sheaf of parchment.

"You must be very busy today," he said, and wondered if the tiny girl was hers. Just seeing the child tugged on his heartstrings a little, reminding him of Tonks.

"Is she yours?" The young woman seemed young, but being a young mother wasn't exactly strange in the wizarding world.

"Remus. And it's Verity. De Luca." She grinned, reaching up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "No, you're not my teacher anymore, but did you know, you were certainly the best I had. Besides, my mother always taught me to address everyone even a few seconds older than me in a respectful manner, not familiarly. So- habit." She sent him a cheeky smile.

"I have been busy, yes." She noticed him watching Mickey and looked down at her, feeling that funny little flip of her stomach whenever she realized this child was hers. She could still remember what it had been like to carry her. "It's fun, though."

Then she blanched, eyes widening. "Um, n-no. She's my sister."

"Verity," Remus said, glad for the reminder. He was pleased to hear that she thought he was one of the best teachers she had, and smiled modestly. He did miss it, teaching. Quite a lot. "Thank you. And being polite is hardly a bad habit."

He nodded, glad to hear that she was having fun. "It's nice to enjoy your work."

Verity's apparent shock over him calling the young girl hers made him wince. "I'm sorry," he said quickly. "It was the hair. I wasn't sure..." He let his voice drift off and gave her an apologetic look. "So you're nanny for the day. I don't know whether it would be fortunate or harrowing to bring her here, but I suspect it might be the latter."

"I bet she does," he said, and smiled at the crown of the little girl's head. To think that he'd have a child some day... Well, he didn't want to think of it really, particularly if he or she would share his furry problem, which was not at all little.

"I would, yes," he said, finally. "They know how to contact me."
