RP: Working on a Weekend
Date: 29 August 1997
Characters: Bill Weasley, Xavier Selwyn
Location: Gringotts
Status: Private
Summary: The goblins have summoned Bill to deal with another Ministry official.
Completion: Complete

Bill hadn't worked on a Saturday in years. Not since Peru really. But when the goblins summoned, you came. Without question. All he knew was that they wanted him to deal with yet another Ministry official. He wasn't sure about what, but it couldn't be good.

He Apparated to the bank and went to his office for a few minutes, damned if he was going to be on time to meet with anyone from the joke-of-a-Ministry they now had.

Xavier was in Gringotts for the second time that week. Hopefully the answer to his request would be more positive this time.

As he waited for whomever the goblins had called in, he sat idly in the chair in the small office he'd occupied the last time he was there. If he planned on spending any more time there, he'd have to invest in something more comfortable. And considering the fascinating things he'd discovered about the lovely Miss Spinnet, he rather thought he'd be here more often. When a witch who had been a member of that idiotic organization of school children had such fascinating ideas, well, he'd be a fool not to follow up. It could be she was trying to get in close with him, but the frightened look in her eyes made him think that wasn't entirely true. So yes, he would be visiting with Miss Spinnet yet again. It might prove useful.

The door opened and Xavier's eyes went up to the person who entered. He sighed inwardly. Next time he'd have to specifically request no blood traitors.

"Weasley," he said, nodding at the spare chair. "Do sit."

He'd seen this bloke around the bank, conferring with the goblins and generally stalking around. Considering the chair for a long moment, he finally shook his head. "No thanks. I'll stand. And you've got me at a disadvantage, sir, as I don't know your name."

"Oh, how rude of me," Xavier said, standing up and holding out his hand. "Xavier Selwyn. I'm with the Ministry, head of the Department of Magical Transporation."

He smiled faintly, somewhat self-deprecating. "So this isn't quite my field of expertise, but when the Minister says jump, it's best to do so," he said, watching and wondering how the traitor would react to that.

It was on the tip of Bill's tongue to make a comment about how the Imperius was likely to make one do that. But he didn't need to draw attention to himself. And he had Fleur to think about now too.

"Selwyn," he said, squeezing the other bloke's hand just a tiny bit harder than he had to. "Yes, I know how it is to work out of one's field of expertise. Customer relations isn't really my forte either. Yet here I am." They were still shaking hands. Bill was not going to give in first and he squeezed a bit harder.

Xavier's smile broadened even as his fingers tightened again. Finally, though, he released the other man. It was terribly juvenile to do things such as that, after all.

"Indeed," he said, nodding. "I'll get right to it, then. The Ministry is looking to monitor who enters the building, and the goblins have indicated that you would be the person to speak with in setting such a thing up."

Bill hid a smile. It was a stupid immature thing to do, but somehow it gave him pleasure that the other bloke had let go first.

"The goblins are amenable to such a thing?" They had always prided themselves on being outside the scope of the Ministry. In fact, the bank, in one form or another, predated the Ministry as it was currently set up. The thought of the Ministry knowing who was entering and leaving was boggling.

"They have no choice," Xavier told him. "The monitoring will occur outside the building itself, in Diagon, so the goblins have no control over it."

They hadn't been happy, but he didn't much caare about that.

"Well, then, I think the Ministry would be in the best position to implement such a procedure. Surely your people are much better trained for that sort of work." He likely ought to school his tone better, but he wouldn't be a part of such a thing. For a variety of reasons.

And perhaps they could work around it. Direct Apparition into the bank. The times were so desperate now that the goblins might just go for it.

Xavier's lips thinned. The reason they'd approached the bank was because there was an extraordinary number of Mudbloods in the departments that would normally deal with such implementation.

"So you're refusing to help then?"

Bill blinked. "I was merely suggesting that perhaps the MLE might be better prepared to deal with such a system. I know that it is not your area of expertise. Nor is it mine. We might defer to an expert. Surely you know someone."

"I was told that wards were your expertise, Mr. Weasley," he said coolly. "You're adept at breaking curses, aren't you? It should be quite similar, I would think."

It seemed he'd gotten under Selwyn's skin a bit. "Yes, but the area outside the bank isn't under Gringott's control. I'm not certain I have the authority to place it under wards."

"You do if you're doing it at the Ministry's behest." If he wasn't such a Mugglelover like this father, Xavier would think he was angling for money. Well, it couldn't hurt to offer. "We would, of course, compensate you for your time and energy. Quite handsomely."

Only a bloke like Selwyn and his ilk would think that money was the answer. Although how ironic it would be to take the Ministry's money and funnel it to the Order.

"In that case..." Bill nodded. "I'm not certain we could even do it. Such a public place and all with loads of passersby. But I'll look into it."

Xavier didn't show his surprise when Weasley accepted his offer. He wasn't sure if the other wizard had said yes out of greed or in belief that he could get the money without doing the work.

"Excellent. I'll expect an owl from you within the week, then, updating me on your progress."

"Absolutely," Bill said. He'd need to confer with Fleur and his father before he made a final decision. Might be a good idea to talk to the goblins too about their real feelings about this.

"And if you'll excuse me, I have a few other things to attend to." Selwyn could find his own way out no doubt.
