RP: Art is ...
Date: 22 August 1997
Characters: Xavier Selwyn, Percy Weasley, Gawain Robards, Graylin Savage, Nymphadora Lupin
Location: Ministry of Magic
Status: Public (Feel free to tag your characters in - they needn't talk to Xavier unless you want them to! They can talk amongst themselves, etc. etc.)
Summary: Xavier examines the new statue in the Atrium.
Completion: Complete

Stepping away from the Apparation point, Xavier glanced around the Atrium. A large mass in the center had him curious. They'd replaced the statue finally, it seemed. The gaping hole had seemed odd to him, though he didn't miss the awful statue in the least.

Briefcase in hand, he strode toward the new artwork. It was certainly gathering enough attention and once he elbowed his way through the crowd to the front he saw why. Taking in the witch and wizard - both in very fine robes, he noted - he had to smile faintly at the 'Magic is Might' emblazoned along the base. Indeed, it was, and too few people realized it.

His eyes flickered to what the witch and wizard were sitting on. While he didn't care for the nudity (he could live his entire life without seeing a Muggle or Mudblood naked, thank you), he did share the sentiment. Once the wizarding world was brought to heel, he hoped the Dark Lord would authorize turning their sights to the Muggles.

It appeared, judging from the shocked whispers, the gasps, the horrified eyes, that not everyone agreed with him, however. He turned, taking note of the names, and when he didn't know the names (more often than not), the faces. They'd be ones to keep an eye upon. And the sooner these fools realized who was in charge in the world, the better it would all be.

Gawain heard the whispers as soon as he stepped off the Apparation point. The cluster of folks, some in a hushed silence, others not, was his second clue that something had changed since he'd left the night before.

Walking over, he waited until a path cleared before the new statue. Stepping into the gap, he felt his face go stony as he took in the details. He wasn't unfamiliar with the ideas behind it - his mother went on and on about the pureblood legacy and tradition whenever he was home for more than ten minutes - but the way it was displayed made his jaw tighten.

He also didn't care for the 'Magic is Might' or the poor, horribly carved Muggle bodies piled one on top of the other. This wasn't the Ministry he'd joined so many years ago and served faithfully since. His Ministry wasn't a place where one type of wizard was more important than others, where Muggles were seen as anything less than human.

When Gray arrived to work she could hear the commotion and followed it until she found herself standing next to Robards. She stood there horrified looking at this abomination of a statue until her head started to hurt.

"Sir? Who did this? I mean how could they?" Her voice was a little choked up as part of her world started to crumble before her eyes.

Tonks stepped in the door, actually doing fairly well with feeling up today. Yes, Remus was gone, but she didn't puke her guts out this morning and the tea shop had her favourite stuff on sell, and the heat of the weather was soon going to break and, over all, life wasn't that bad. An earnest smile remained across her lips as she pushed her way into the Ministry at a fairly good clip. Lost in her own thoughts she didn't even really notice the statue until she nearly plowed over her partner and direct boss looking up to it.

She stopped, stumbling back from Graylin, then blinked between Gray, Gawain, and the monstrosity above them.

A second later, all sane filters of thoughts to mouth in Tonks brain dropped and, loud enough for the entire room to hear, the pink haired woman exclaimed, "What in -bloody hell- is that?!"

Percy was walking through the atrium with a stack of papers in front of his nose. He figured he'd have to wait a while to catch the lift, as an incident involving him, Hermes, and plate of toast and a soft boiled egg had detained him longer than he'd have liked. What he hadn't expected - and really, who would've - was for the woman standing next to him to shout so loudly that he dropped his papers.

They drifted and scattered across the floor. Normally, Percy would have been running around, summoning them up like a madman, but at the moment, he stood, transfixed by the new sculpture decorating the Ministry's hall.

The blood began to drain away from his face. At first it looked like a witch and wizard sitting on a throne of some kind, but on second glance, he noticed the throne had faces. And limbs. Horrible, twisted, Muggle faces.

"Oh my," he said after a moment, resisting the urge to take off his glasses and polish the lenses. "That's not. That is, it couldn't be-," he paused, finding himself unable to put what he saw into words.

Gawain sometimes wondered how Tonks had managed to get this far in life without getting herself killed. Of course, Savage and Weasley didn't look any better. They hadn't lived through the first war, he reminded himself.

"It's the new statue, Auror Tonks," he said crisply, giving each of them a look in turn.

"It's disgusting." Gray spat out now that speech had been returned to her. "Wizards aren't conquering heroes and muggles aren't beasts. Why would anyone put up something this sick?"

It galled Gray that the Ministry would approve of something like this in public. Had the world lost it's mind?"

"I don't think this is the appropriate place for this discussion," Gawain said, eyeing first her and then Tonks before his gaze flickered to Weasley. None of them looked all that steady. Merlin help them all.

"Come - we need to get to work," he said firmly, gesturing for them to precede him to the lift.

He could feel eyes on them and he turned, seeing Xavier Selwyn looking at him. That one wasn't to be trusted. He nodded at the other wizard briefly before looking back at the younger people.

Gray sighed and nodded, she wasn't in a position to loose her job and bad mouthing the ministry in front of witnesses would do just that. The ways things were going she would end up in Azkaban or something.

She followed Robards into the lift with Tonks. There was a man looking at him but it was creepy and she couldn't help but shudder.

"Are things going to get worse sir?"

Gawain let the witches precede him, and he also paused to let Weasley get in as well.

Once the doors shut, he relaxed slightly since they were the only ones in the lift.

He frowned, waiting a moment before nodding. "It certainly seems that way, Savage."
