RP: Girl Talk
Characters: Verity De Luca, Alicia Spinnet
Place: Diagin Alley
Date: 18 August 1997
Summary: The girls catch up on what's been going on and discuss the disturbing developments in Diagon.
Status: Private/Complete

Alicia came down the steps of Gringotts, a leather binder with some work documents under one arm, along with the rather disturbing paperwork she'd been asked to fill out earlier today. It was a very innoucuous looking form, but nonetheless, it bothered her, particularly with everything going on lately.

She had made plans to have drinks and some sort of food with Verity after work, and she headed down the pavement towards Fred and George's shop, wondering if they'd heard anything about the forms.

Her bootheels seemed loud on the cobblestones, and it seemed unusually empty for this time of day, which was strange. Almost as if everyone was holed up still at work or at home. She shrugged off the odd feeling it gave her and pushed in the door of the joke shop, noting Verity was alone behind the counter.

"Oi, Sweetheart," she said, grinning at the sight of Verity counting the money in the register. "Those totals better not be off when the money comes to the bank."

Forms. Verity hated forms. Especially the ones that asked her to describe herself in tiny little boxes. She was...so much more than that. And whenever she tried to fill them out her handwriting would get all cramped and tiny and she would inevitably run out of space anyway.

Plus, there was that annoying little space with the lines to write names of family members. And at the end? You had to put 'relation'. She was going to have to think on that one...she couldn't lie on a government form, could she? But then she would have to tell everyone. And she wasn't particularly ready for that.

"Oi yourself, Alicakes. I'm no thief!" she exclaimed, sticking out her tongue. "Besides, those two are in the back blowing shite up, d'you really think they'd notice if I took them for a few Galleons? She winked to show she was teasing, because really. They'd given her a job, she would never repay them by stealing from them.

Putting itching powder in their shoes, though? Hell yes.

"True enough, but you might find your tits had shrunk overnight. No, on second thought, they'd probably just get bigger." She gave Verity a grin and then leaned in and gave her a hug in greeting before leaning against the counter with her elbows and waiting.

She cast a curious glance in the direction of the backroom, thinking that it was probably best not to distract the boys if they were in invention mode.

"You ready to go?" she asked. "I can muck around for a bit if you need to stay. Look at the new products."

"Oh, no, not that!" she exclaimed, mock-terrified. Verity had never been incredibly blessed in the bust...until giving birth to Michaela. And then they just hadn't gone away! They'd stayed big! Well. Ish. Bigger than they had been anyway. But they didn't need to get bigger.

"Yeah, I'm about done. Just have to count up the total, leave a note and the deposit bag for the lads. I should leave it upstairs actually, I'll be right back." She held up a hand, indicating to Alicia that she should wait, and ran upstairs with the deposit bag. Placing it on the kitchen table, she scribbled a quick note for them and then headed back down to the shop.

"Okay. Let's go. I'm starving."

Alicia had been eying some of the Wonder Witch products with barely concealed amusement as Verity came downstairs. The two of them were night and day when it came to girly versus tomboy.

"Me too," she said, stepping out onto the pavement again, her binder still under her arm, along with her work robe, which she'd pulled off to adjust to the still somewhat warm summer air. "Where do we want to go? The Leaky is probably full of pervy old men out for their pint after work. Is that a plus or a minus in your book?"

Taking off her magenta work robe and folding it neatly to place it beneath the counter on a shelf clearly labeled 'Verity's shite, touch and die', Verity gave a little twirl as she stepped out into the shop area. Her floaty skirt spun out and it made her grin as she walked up to link her arm through Ali's, dragging her out of the shop.

"That's definitely a minus, if I have to get hit on during dinner it needs to be by young, attractive men." She thought for a moment. "I could do Chinese."

Alicia made a vague, almost orgasmic sounding moan. "The Emperor's Phoenix it is then. I can definitely do with some Spring Rolls. And some of those yummy dumplings." She squeezed Verity's arm as they walked, feeling a bit better now that they were out on the pavement together.

"How are Fred and George?" she asked. "Treating you right? You know if they don't I'll beat them up for you." They turned into the archway that led into the quiet, lantern lit corridors of the Chinese restaurant.

The hostess brightened as she saw them, and Alicia realized with a start that they were almost the only patrons, short of an old couple in the far back.

Alicia's moan-thing had Verity looking at her askance, raising her eyebrows. "You all right there, Spinnet?" Thankfully the restaurant wasn't too far down the Alley.

"They're great. You know I love working for them, even if my parents think that it's a dead-end job. But it's fun. Besides," she added with a smirk, "those two need someone to keep them in line." Not that she did a terrific job of that. Usually she was right in the mess with them whenever possible.

Wow, and they were practically the only people here. Odd.

"Just completely starving," she said as they were shown to their table.

She took her menu and looked it over, thinking that maybe she could also get some sort of Schezuan dish. She could always take the leftovers home.

"They completely do," she said. "Even if they don't realize it themselves."

They placed their order, and she took a long grateful sip from the beer the waiter placed before her, in its intricate little bottle.

"So what else have you been up to?" she asked. "I feel like I haven't seen you all summer."

"Oh, me too." She slid into her seat, grabbing the menu immediately and scanning over it. Dumplings. Those sounded good. Fried rice, too, and maybe some seafood type thing. She tried not to think about how much Mickey loved fried rice, or how she had finally mastered the art of the fork without flinging her food all over herself and everyone else.

"Not much. Mostly working. Took some vacation time to spend with my family, and we went on a trip. Barbados. Mum loves it." And so had Mickey, and she'd been so cute splashing around in the surf in her teeny little bathing suit.

Verity sighed, willing herself to snap out of it. She was out with her friend. Having fun, damn it.

"So that's where you've been off too." It was odd. Verity had been a lot different when they were younger. Not that she wasn't still full of fun and vivacious, but she seemed a lot more preoccupied now, a lot less likely to pick up and go out with the rest of them. She wondered how much else had changed in the year that she'd been gone from the rest of them. Katie, for example. She hadn't seen her nearly enough since she'd been back. Part of it could be what had happened to her, but also, just maybe people drifted apart a little.

Of course they all had a lot on their minds lately.

"Sounds like fun," she said absently, her hand going back to the binder.

"Ver? Did you hear anything about this registration form that people are supposed to be filling out? Did you get one?"

"Yep. There and at home, mostly." Taking care of her daughter. Working. Trying not to seem like she was freaking out that she couldn't seem to make up her mind anymore. Merlin. She was- no, she was just going to ignore all of this right now.

Her head snapped up from where she was frowning at the placemat, which informed her what sort of animal sign she should look for in a mate. "Yeah, I got one. Haven't filled it out yet, though. I'll probably wait till the last minute, as per usual. Only reason I'm going to fill the damn thing out is so that Fred and George don't get in any sort of trouble."

Al nodded, her fingers brushing along the binder's spine.

"Yeah. I know. That's probably a good idea." Her eyes met Verity's. "There's a part in it... about heritage." She bit her lip. "I don't like the sound of that very much. Especially with everything that's been going on."

The waitress approached and somehow her voice dipped without her even realizing it, the quiet of the restaurant making her feel like she was talking much too loudly as it was.

Sipping the hot tea that she had ordered, Verity frowned, unconsciously wrinkling her nose up. "Yeah. And the section where you have to list all of your immediate family members. I feel like this isn't just some normal census, Ali."

She wondered briefly if, say she did identify Michaela as her daughter, she would have to identify her father on the form. That could potentially be problematic. But then, if it was her blood heritage that they were looking for...that would be problematic anyway. If they were as frowny upon halfbloods as they were muggleborns, anyway.

The waitress brought their food, and Verity couldn't help but chuckle. "We ordered quite the spread."

Alicia considered the multitude of dishes and smiled in return.

"Well, luckily I have a healthy appetite." She put a little of everything on her plate before liberally adding Chinese mustard and Chili Oil in dollops on one side.

After the first yummy bite of dumpling, she washed it down with beer and looked back over at Verity.

"So what do we think the Ministry is going to do with this information?"

Loading up her plate till it was nearly too full, Verity grinned at the array of food in front of her. "Me too. Merlin, it's been too long since I've had any sort of Chinese." She forked up a huge bite of rice, making a happy noise in the back of her throat as she chewed and swallowed.

"I...don't have a clue. Unless it's to identify where the Muggleborns live and work, to make them easier to find." Her voice was lower on her last statement, and she sighed.

Alicia felt her appetite killed just a little, but she continued to eat anyway.

"Yeah, that's kind of what I thought." She leaned her chin on her hand in consideration. Lately things had been almost dangerously quiet after a summer of killings and all sorts of horrible things. The quiet worried her.

"Well, hopefully it's nothing," she tried to sound more cheerful than she felt.

"I ran into your best friend a week or two ago. He stole half my danish."

"Yeah," she said, hearing in her own voice an echo of the false optimism that she heard in Alicia's. "Well, no use worrying over something that hasn't happened yet and that we have no control over. We'll deal with it when we have to and not before." Not that either of them had anything to worry about themselves, being Pureblood, but they had friends who weren't.

Then she laughed out loud, throwing her head back. There was no mistaking who Alicia meant. "Now, Alicakes, I'm telling you. Don't get between Adrian and his Danish. I tried once and it wasn't pretty," she said, waggling her finger scoldingly, though she was grinning. "What kind was it?"

Al gave her a look. "It was mine first. And then he took a bite out of it." She scowled slightly. Really, Pucey was insufferable. It was almost a relief to discuss that, because the other conversation probably wasn't wise in public. She kept feeling like the waitress was watching them, but it was probably because there was no one else here. Then again, this was the kind of place where they filled your water glass ten times.

"Apple."

Verity chuckled. That was quite an Adrian thing to do. Especially when it was an apple Danish. She'd lost many a good pastry to that boy when they were dating.

"Well, there you are then. That's his favorite." When Alicia's expression did not change, Verity gave her a winning smile. "Would you like me to talk to him and ask him not to steal your Danish ever again, darling?" she asked, trying her hardest not to laugh.

Alicia rolled her eyes. She had no idea how Verity had dated him, let alone still talked to him. The man was a neanderthal.

"They're my favorite too. And no need for that. I just stole my half back and then spilled coffee on his shoes. Plus, I don't play on ever seeing him in any capacity let alone a Danish stealing one, so I think we're fine."

Verity's eyebrows lifted.

"All right. But might I say that for someone who isn't planning on seeing him again... you're the one who brought him up."

Alicia kept her expression completely even. "I was only trying to make conversation." She took a large bite of dumpling and chewed on it. Seriously, as if she'd ever give Pucey the time of day. He was just the sort of bloke her father would like her to date. Thank Merlin her mother had more sense.

She shoved the plate of dumplings at Verity.

"Here. Eat them. Get fat."

"No thanks. I like my rice, thank you," Verity said with a grin, although she completely ignored her own statement and stole a dumpling. Just one, though. She didn't need any more.

"So. Shopping after this?"

Al eyed the dumpling that Verity took and then plopped a Spring Roll on her plate for good measure. They were so going for ice cream for dessert.

She pretended to consider that. "Shopping," she said. "Sounds like a brilliant idea."

That, at least, was one thing they had in common. And a very important thing it was too.
