When someone spoke to her unexpectedly, Lila spun to face her, raising the briefcase as a shield while she drew her knife with the other hand. She didn't even think about it, it was just trained instinct at this point. And maybe she was still a little on edge after the betrayal by her mother.
She lowered the briefcase, and the knife disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. If she were lucky, the other woman wouldn't even have noticed it.
"Yeah, I'm new. Just woke up on the beach over there."
Maria looked her over, looking for evidence of injuries presumably. "No, I'm not hurt," Lila said. "But I wouldn't say no to something to eat, or just getting out of the wind."
