"Perhaps if we make it to the second floor they will." Kaz inhaled through his nose and exhaled through his mouth. His skin seemed to itch beneath his pant leg where the shadow brushed against him. Kaz hated being touched; the action alone held the potential to send him into a panic attack or worse, to cause him to faint. Thankfully, so far, Kaz had managed to keep himself conscious, but it was taking everything he had.
Another few steps and the two were on the second floor. "So much for it being better..." A voice shouted at them to leave and an angry man appeared before them. His eyes were wide with rage and he was snarling. Kaz somehow managed to keep himself steady, but his heart was racing in his chest. The Bastard of the Barrel had never seen a ghost before and he was frightened.
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, briefly blotting out the shouting and the sight of the furious figure in order to center himself. Come on, Kaz he thought. You've face far worst than a pissed off ghost. You have to keep going. For Inej. And because Kaz hated being bested.
Opening his eyes, he skimmed the space and spotted a room off to the side. With a brief glance over his shoulder to ensure Nina was still behind him, Kaz started for the room and motioned for her to follow.
