Did Kaz hope Nina heard heartbeats? Yes. As soon as she confirmed there was no other heartbeats besides their own, Kaz felt a chill run down his spine. It meant the shadow moving on the spiral staircase was something of the supernature variety. Something Kaz didn't readily believe in, but now was being forced to confront. The bastard of the barrel turned to look at Nina over his shoulder.
"Then this place is truly haunted," he whispered back. Before he could say another word, a loud moan interrupted him and Kaz covered his ears. The sound was intolerable. He forced himself to focus on the contents of the room, frowning when he realized it was completely trashed. The fireplace looked as if something had exploded within it. There was a torn picture of what Kaz guessed used to be the keeper of the lighthouse, broken furniture, and faded, torn papers everywhere.
Kaz stepped forward, shifting through the papers with his cane, but they were far too damaged to provide clues as to what they'd originally said. With a final look around the room, Kaz turned to leave and motioned for Nina to follow him. He didn't think they had much time before this ghost decided he'd had enough and tried far more violent tactics to evict them. Kaz wanted to at least see the second floor before then.
Exiting the room, he started up the stair case, goosebumps scattered over his skin as the shadow brushed past him. He inhaled sharply and forced himself to continue upward.
