Kaz pondered her question. Given Nina had the ability to heal-even if it was not her main focus as a Grisha-it was best if Kaz went first. That way, if something happened, Nina would be able to heal him or defend if necessary. Kaz didn't know what awaited them within the confines of the lighthouse, but because of the vibes he was receiving from the building, he felt it better for him to take the lead.
"You come in behind me. The gesture has nothing to do with chivalry and everything to do with strategy. You're powered and I am not. If something happens to me, you can at least use your abilities to defend or heal," Kaz explained. Not waiting to hear if Nina countered, Kaz started for the door and, finding it unlocked, pulled it open. The Bastard of the Barrel stepped inside and immediately the haunting sound of moaning and rapid whispers filled his ears. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of something moving up and down along the spiral staircase.
Whipping his head around, he saw the thing ascending and descending the staircase was a black shadow of some kind. It didn't seem to notice Nina and him. What the hell? Kaz did not believe in ghosts. It took a lot for him to believe in magic. However, here was something, a being, that could be a potential spirit. A phantom. Kaz looked at Nina over his shoulder and pressed a finger to his lips. He gestured for her to follow him into one of the side rooms.
