Adam started laughing, and then he realized what she'd said. She'd known he'd killed his uncle. How could she possibly have known that? His smile faded, and he stared at her, looking for any sign that she was lying.
"No," Adam said finally in defiance. "No, I...there's no way I'd get involved with someone else after..." Not after Evelyn. He was too broken. "No," he snapped, glaring to cover his sudden inner turmoil.
He wouldn't look into her memories, because he was afraid she was right. And how could he do that? How could he just forget about Evelyn and move on?
