Elle was a bit delusional for a second. She eyed him with a hurt expression written across her soft features, her mouth hanging slightly ajar as if she was going to say something, but she couldn't as her throat clamped shut. She was waiting for the moment to come - the one where Adam suddenly burst into laughter and pulled her into his arms to apologize.
But, it didn't.
The way he was looking at her now. It was something she never wanted to see again. She stared blankly at his expression, the casual look on his face that told Elle he didn't care and that whatever she said next wouldn't matter at all.
"Please tell me you're joking. Please." She couldn't help the frantic tone she had, her voice matching the expression she had on her face.
