“There you are, stranger,” Gala slid into the booth beside Itachi. Itachi, who had been waiting for her, slid a plate of food to her. Gala look immensely pleased. Gala was a Collaborator. As far as Itachi knew, she had been here since she was eight, and she was now his age. This meant she has a very interesting and solid position with the Collaborators. She was parts of a small group that never intended to go home and desired to live out their lives in Pacis Urbs as heroes.
Or something like that.
Gala was tall for a woman, about Itachi’s height. She was covered in twisting and curling tattoos from head to foot, pale on her chestnut colored skin. Her eyes were a bright green, her hair a very muted brown that fell in ordinary waves around her shoulders. Today she dressed in a long, thick skirt and a tank top that ended above her belly button. Having grown up in this place, she adopted styles easily, trying out anything that caught her fancy. She had large hoop earrings tonight, with glass beads clustered on them and a matching, twisted glass and wire necklace.
“Got anything to report?” Gala asked as she poked through the food.
“I have a list of those who’ve changed sex on my floor, but not much else. Isidia seems to be able to glow purple.”
“Huh, that seems useless.”
“Yes...I’m wondering he’s doing besides growing purple,” Itachi admitted as he slid his list over. He’d already been marked as a Collaborator by the compliance with the Scientist’s rules and how well he performed in Games. If he worked within the infrastructure, then at least he could benefit from their good graces.
“Do you know what’s caused the...body changing?” Itachi asked as he picked through his own food.
“No. I’m very sure it’s not the Scientists. They can’t just change bodies like that, or they never could before. The techs didn’t have anything to say. They all seemed pretty shocked. Terence went in to get checked over, and he’s a fully functioning woman now.” Gala grinned. One plus of having grown up here, she was treated with more indulgence than others might have been. “Lena, one of the medics, is worried someone’s going to be stupid and get pregnant.”
“Do you think it’s permanent?” Itachi asked.
“Mm, who can tell? A lot of weird stuff that happens usually goes back to normal. But everyone’s freaking out. You’d think breasts were the end of the world,” Gala shrugged and looked at her breasts, as if wondering if they could end the world. Itachi eyed them and wondered what the fuss was about. Gala caught him grinning and leered.
“Don’t worry, Itachi. If you suddenly turn into a girl, I’ll show you all the ins and outs of being a female.” Gala patted him on the shoulder, and took a sip from his cup. “How’re you doing after breaking up with Shisui? I heard it was pretty bad--he ran off crying.”
“He did not,” Itachi protested. He eyed Gala, who looked a little too gleeful. “Did you see him crying?”
Gala shrugged. “Well, no, but I’m sure he did. Didn’t you cry, or are you tougher than that about losing your best friend and all that?” Gala propped her chin on her hand and cocked her head to the side to watch Itachi carefully.
Itachi could flatter himself and say Gala liked him, but he knew she had bigger plans. The Collaborators had sent her to deal with him because she was around his age, and she wouldn’t be swayed to his point of view. Snappily observant and a bit harsh, she didn’t often bother with tact. She simply bashed him over the head with her thoughts and needling, then waited to see what he would do.
She wasn’t really cruel, though. They’d been in two games together, and she was loyal to the bone to her team and objective. She was just rough and probably purposely so. Itachi felt she was more intrigued by him than he was by her, which gave him a slight advantage. But, she was a long standing collaborator and the darling of a certain group of them. They’d reached a fairly good balance over the past few weeks, though this month she’d been around more.
Itachi hadn’t mind. It distracted him from Shisui. The first two days had been a sick relief, but after that Itachi had started to miss Shisui sharply. Like an infected sore, it ached and itched. He kept being tempted to go find Shisui, just to check on him, but he knew that would only hurt more. Gala wasn’t anything like Shisui, though she wasn’t the kind of person that would immediately repulse Itachi. He found it...refreshing. In a way.
“No, just used to doing without,” Itachi corrected.
“Okay, that’s just depressing.” Gala sighed. “I guess you’ll have to make due with my sorry company.”
“It’s not so bad,” Itachi admitted, poking through his food. He needed to find his appetite again. It seemed to have taken a vacation.
“You really know how to give a compliment, don’t you? We need to work on your people skills,” Gala smiled, pleased instead of offended.
“And how are we going to do that?” Itachi asked dryly.
“We’re going to get your pretty face out their recruiting,” Gala decided, poking him in the cheek. “And you can help me figure out this whole guy-to-girl fiasco and who caused it. Should be fun.”
And it would align him strongly with the Collaborators. Clever. Itachi smiled a fraction and shrugged. “Why not? I could use a few new friends.” And maybe he could get some real answers about this place if he kept this girl close.
