Bee was so happy. So very, very happy. He’d been talking to Gin Charlie and he’d mentioned a fiddle and Gin Charlie had found him one! And given it to him! Oh it was so lovely, burnished wood and wire strings and it sang so sweet under his trembling fingertips. He’d thanked Gin Charlie profusely (the man had almost seemed embarrassed by it) and now, oh now he had to try it out. Had to let it sing.
He raced across the first-floor lobby, fiddle in one hand and bow in the other, Cooter racing along behind him. Out the door, out across the grass, and Bee laughed brightly. Ah!
Green grass under bare feet and and endless autumn sky soaring up to eternity. Sunshine and a cool breeze and Bee laughed again as he raced across the grass. Cooter leapt and barked at him. Bee laughed and twisted to see him, tucked the fiddle under his chin and snapped the bow across the strings. The fiddle wailed, and Cooter threw back his head and howled.
“Hush, hush!”
Laughing loud and bright, Bee’s fingers leapt into the right places and he played a quick reel of ‘Turkey in the Straw,’ dancing a quick leg of a jig. Oh so wonderful! The feel of the strings, the sweet bloom of the music!
“El Roi be praised!” he laughed, soul full, heart overflowing with joy.
Then he set the bow to the strings and began in earnest. The quick-paced song rolled so easily from beneath his calloused fingertips, and he started to dance, a rhythmic quick jig, delight giving him the need, the desire to move, praise with his whole being. Cooter barked and leapt, dancing around him. Bee’s voice rang out, a startlingly high and clear alto like a young child’s.
“A billion bright and holy beams from the light that travels far...”
