A poor boy. The poor girl. Matty had tried to keep her safe. She'd tried to convince her to stay! She should have tried so much harder. Instead the poor dear was dead and that thing had another meal. Matty was determined to not let it have anymore! She been prepared that second night in the fog. She'd had weapons. She wore cloth over her mouth to keep the fog from being so breathed in! She thought she was smart and careful but at the end of the night she still found herself wandering around confused. A fright to not remember why you were going left instead of right! She'd been tricked by the sounds and the growls. Run around like a scared bunny! But a bunny that still knew she had some purpose, even if she couldn't recall it! She'd hunted still. She'd looked. The fog led her astray and she never did find the girl. She tried! She realized that when the memories slipped back into place. The sweet child was dead no matter her efforts to prevent it. No one even knew her real name! Little Rose. The princess that was lost to the monster. Matty knew by the description that it was her. The one that she knew the white vans had been looking for. No wonder they were so fewer now! No need to hunt for who was already lost! Matty found herself in quite the fit after she remembered; when she knew what had happened in the night! Poor kitties scrambled to hide as crafting items were hurled around her small cabin. Tatters of paper and strings of yarn still decorated the home in odd arrays. The kitties now were playing with it all but they knew their human wasn't right! She paced. Back and forth back and forth. She had to find a better way to navigate the fog. She had to stop it from happening again. That thing. Monsters couldn't always win! Matty spent the day preparing. A frenzy of movement to be ready. She cooked food, just in case whoever she saved needed a home to stay in for a time. She left out extra food for her cats, just in case she was not home for a few days. She knew her memories had been lost more than once! Poor dears didn't need to starve just because she didn't remember where home was for a day or two! She readied her shot gun and found herself an old bat to take along too! She traded her flowing layered skirt for a pair of pants with various pockets all containing useful items now. Flash lights and a knife and a water too! She didn't know what she was hunting but she knew what hunters usually brought with them. She copied them, even watching a hunting show to be sure she had everything! Matty knew, oh she knew, she could have tried to call in help but she didn't want to drag anyone else into the mess. The fog had invaded the wilds, her home, and Matty was going to protect it as best she could! Last to her preparations was going into town. She heard a great deal of rumors then. Talk and talk and talk of all the things. Such blind belief in some wild animal! Oh so sad you know, that an animal could do that! Matty wasn't blind. She didn't believe what was fed to her like a little sheep. She knew what was in the fog. She knew and she didn't need anyone to believe her. Not this time. She knew the truth. She knew she had to face it. In town she found what she needed. Not easy of course and it gave her some funny looks as she left the store with the mask in hand. She didn't know if this would keep the fog out but it was worth the try! Even if it did make it so very hard to see. Back home Matty waited. She continued her pacing. She petted the cats and tended the fire. She watched the clock as it ticked and ticked but seemed to still slow as she waited for night. Only when it came near, did she change and take her stance by the window. Watching. She didn't know if the fog would come. She couldn't know. It hadn't been there every night. It could be over. This trick. This ploy. The beast could be done and onto its new game. Matty hoped it was! She watch and she watched and she hoped that it didn't roll in. No growls and snarls and thing from beyond to steal someone's life away. No bad night for someone all over again. She sighed when the fog came in. She heaved that sigh with all she had and then she steeled herself! A straight spine and a determined face. Matty wasn't letting anyone die tonight! Tugging the mask into place, Matty quickly stepped out the door and quickly shut it behind her to prevent any fog from getting in and harming her kitties. They were safe inside tonight. Safe and sound as she'd kept them all week. Her home was always a safe haven. For the little ones. For animals. For any and all who needed it. Tonight she was trying to make the Wilds safe too. Set to her task, Matty began to roam the wilds. Looking for the thing that killed. Hunting the hunter. |
