Kol was finishing getting ready for the ball. They had to be there on time, considering he was one of the hosts. He was in a classic tux, black slacks, a black blazer with white button up and black bow tie. He had already laced Clara’s dress up, and was waiting for her to finish her hair and makeup, as he made sure his own hair and outfit was perfect. He peaked into the bathroom, giving her a smile. “Almost ready, love?”
Kol Mikaelson loved hosting and attending balls, so as his girlfriend, Clara was getting used to the idea that this would be a large part of her life. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy her time at them, actually she did. It was that it wasn't anything she was used to before New York. Since then, however, every party or ball that had been thrown, Kol had gone and taken Clara as his guest. And this one was his own. Or well, his and the other two versions of Kol that were around.
She had gotten dressed and was just finishing up her hair and makeup when she heard Kol speak. “Almost,” she answered, putting the finishing touches on before getting up and turning to him.
Kol smiled softly as he saw her. She looked absolutely stunning. Of course, they'd been to a few balls, parties and various other social gatherings and she looked stunning at all of them, as well as on a daily basis. He'd never get used to how beautiful she was. "You look gorgeous," he told her with a smile. "But I think you're missing something. Some jewelry," he said, offering her a black box.
Clara smiled at the compliment. Of course it wasn’t the first time he’d said it and probably wouldn’t be the last, but it made her feel good to hear it no matter how many times it had been said. When she offered her the box, she glanced up at him as she took it from him. After that, she opened it. “It’s beautiful,” she said as she looked up at him again with a smile.
Kol watched her reaction to the necklace. "I know you've been having a lot of concerns about what my future holds, and I wanted you to know I'm not going anywhere," he said, kissing her softly. "Happy Valentines Day, darling."
It was true. There had been several different concerns about his future and lack thereof. She wasn't sure now if he was referring to the possibility of death or if he was referring to Davina and the future child. But right now, she cared about the fact that it was Valentines Day and that they were there together. She kissed him back and smiled up at him. “Happy Valentines Day,” she repeated.
Kol brushed her hair from her face, giving her a smile. "Would you like me to put it on you?" He asked. He knew they had to go soon, but didn't want to rush her out the door either.
Clara smiled up at him and nodded. “I’d like that,” she replied as she handed it back to him and turned around. She knew, too, that they had to leave soon, but she also knew that it wouldn't take too long to put the necklace on her.
Kol took the necklace out of its box, waiting as she turned. He put it around her throat, clasping it easily. "There we go. Let's see," he requested.
Once Kol clasped the necklace, Clara straightened it, letting it fall directly on the center of her chest. Then she turned to Kol, letting him see her now that she had the necklace on to complete the ensemble.
Kol's smile widened as he saw her complete outfit. "Absolutely stunning. Definitely the prettiest girl at the ball," he told her. "Ready to go?"
Clara smiled teasingly as he told her that she was the prettiest girl at the ball. “How do you know that if we’re not there yet?” she asked him before giving the nod that she was ready.
Kol laughed softly. "Because you're the most gorgeous girl I've seen in a thousand years, my love," he told her, offering her his arm.
Clara smiled softly in response. It was when the compliment turned into something like that that it made her feel really good. A thousand years was a long time and in order to tell her that she was the most gorgeous girl he had seen in all that time was a pretty big compliment. “You’re just trying to charm me,” she teased as she took his arm.
Kol gave her a playful smile. "I'm always trying to charm you, but I'm also being honest," he told her, kissing her cheek. He led her out of the house, toward where they were hosting the party.
Clara smiled softly as he told her that he was being honest. The thing was, even if it made her feel good, she couldn’t fathom that she was hands down, the most gorgeous girl he had ever seen. Not when he hadn’t just lived a normal human lifetime. “I’ll take your word for it.”
Kol smiled. "Good," he said, giving her a squeeze, before walking into the venue for the ball.
Clara smiled softly as they walked to the venue together. She was one of the few people here who really didn’t want to go home--though at times she missed things about home--because she had met Kol in places like this and she didn’t want to lose him.
Kol looked around, pleased with how Caroline had did. It was still early, and people were just beginning to arrive, but that's what Kol wanted; to be there early. He smiled over at her, "would you like a drink?"
Clara, too, took the chance to look around at the work that had been done. It looked really nice and she could tell by Kol’s expression that he was pleased with it. “Yes, please,” she answered.
Kol smiled down at her, escorting her over to the bar. They were still pouring glasses of champagne to pass out once the party really got started. “Champagne or something else, love?” he asked her.
Clara walked over with him, watching as they poured the champagne. “Champagne is fine,” she replied as he asked her.
Kol nodded and got them both two glasses of champagne, giving her one. He sipped it while he guided her around, looking to make sure everything was in line while everyone was still arriving.
Clara took the glass, thanking him as she did and she walked around with him, sipping her own glass of champagne. She watched as he checked on everything to make sure it was in order. She had seen him do this before and she knew he wouldn’t be doing it all night, so she let him have his peace of mind for now.
Kol sighed happily; this was where he was in his element, at least that didn’t involve sex or killing, and now he was only sleeping with Clara and not partaking in homicide, so it made him happy. Of course he also found happiness in anything he was doing with Clara, but hosting a ball, and having Clara on his arm.. Utter bliss. He smiled over at her. “Our little party planner did a delightful job,” he said enthusiastically.
“I’m glad to hear it,” Clara replied. Of course to her, it looked nice, but he was the one who was likely to be pickier. If he was happy with it, then that was definitely a good thing. She had been to enough balls hosted by him to know the routine, however. She’d enjoy her time as his date later, but for now she was the girlfriend of the host.
Kol went around with her, mingling, greeting people, thanking them for coming, introducing himself and what not for a while. Once it was packed and he was pretty sure most of the guests who intended to be there had arrived, he grabbed his two twins -- who actually looked nothing like him, due to them being in different bodies -- and they went to a higher level of the venue to get attention, officially greeting everyone and considering it started. They explained starting the evening off with a dance, before asking everyone to grab their date and join them. Kol offered his hand to Clara. Obviously, being his date, she’d also be his dance partner, but he always asked. “Will you be my dance partner, love?” he asked.
Clara walked with him as he mingled, introducing herself and politely chatting with the guests until Kol decided it was time to really get started. She watched as the three Kols--hers obviously being the most attractive of the three--greeted everyone and asked them to get their dates and dance with them. Once he turned to her, she took his hand and smiled. “Of course,” she answered.
Kol smiled and interlaced their fingers, going into the large ball room with everyone. He turned to her, resting a hand on her side, his other hand still in hers. Once the music began, he started to move gracefully with her, guiding her as if they were one.
Clara walked with him into the ballroom. Once he turned to her, she placed her free hand on his shoulder and began dancing with him. He had taught her to dance a while back, though she was still learning with every ball, she at least knew the basics.
Kol gave her a charming smile as they danced together. He was still teaching her dances of different centuries, but they were keeping it basic, seeing as he doubted any of the others knew centuries old dances here. “I will never get over how absolutely stunning you are, my love,” he told her as his eyes traveled over her. The dress they’d picked out was beautiful, the way her hair was just out of her face enough, though the back section sat delicately over her shoulders, a few tendrils framing her face. While Clara thought he was just sweet-talking her, he was honest that she was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen.
Clara smiled up at him as they danced. Sometimes she wondered how she was so lucky that he had given her his heart. She might try to avoid his past, but that didn’t mean that she was completely clueless. She knew that she was the first person he had ever committed himself to. And she knew that she was a large part of the reason he changed so much. “Thank you,” she replied, giving him a smile.
It was true, Clara was the first girl he had ever loved, he figured in 1,000 years, that had to mean something. Maybe soulmates did exist, and she was his. "Of course," he said, giving her a gentle kiss. "I love you."
Clara kissed him back softly. “I love you too,” she whispered as she gazed up at him, still dancing.
He smiled down at her lovely while they danced together.
Clara continued dancing with him over the course of a few more songs glad that they were there together.
Kol smiled down at her as they danced. After a few songs, he pulled away, keeping his hand in hers. "Follow me," he said.
When he pulled away and told her to follow him, Clara nodded, holding his hand. “Where are we going?” she asked him.
"You'll see," he said with a smirk, taking her back up the stairs, grabbing another glass of champagne on the way up. He grabbed something to tap his glass to get everyone's attention. "Can I have everyone's attention for a moment?" He requested.
Clara glanced at him curiously as he led her up the stairs. She walked with them, still holding his hand until he needed both to tap the glass.
Kol waited as everyone turned their attention to him. He sipped the champagne before setting everything aside. "Once again, thank you all for coming. I don't know as many people here as I normally do when hosting these balls, but those who do know me know I'm not one to be in a committed relationship or fall in love, but I have found a girl who has captured my heart," he said, before turning to Clara. "I've done a lot, and I know you have a hard time accepting my past, but you've managed to tame the monster. We've only been involved a little over a year, but we've also talked about forever. And if you're ready for forever, I am." He said, before dropping to a knee, taking out a ring and held it up. "Will you do the honor of being my wife, Clara?" He asked.
Clara listened as Kol spoke, though she wasn’t entirely sure why he felt that he needed the attention of the entire room to tell her this. Then he dropped to his knee and her mouth dropped open. It was true that they had talked about forever. They had talked about eternity, though Clara wasn’t ready to make that decision yet. Marriage, however, was more human. It was no less temporary--unless of course she decided not to turn and she eventually died--but it was something she could actually wrap her head around, while turning into a vampire was something that required more thought, questions and time. “I-I,” she tried, having trouble speaking.
All eyes were on them and it admittedly made her more nervous. She swallowed discreetly but tried to keep her focus on him and to allow everyone else in the room to disappear. “I don’t know what to say,” she said quietly
Kol bit his lip. He had asked her so publicly because they'd discussed it before and thought it was a guaranteed yes. Being rejected in private would be bad enough, but in front of everyone would be worse. He waited for a more definite yes or no, giving her a few moments to think.
Clara stood there a few moments longer trying to process it. It wasn’t really that no was an option, except that there was one thing she wasn’t quite sure of. She closed her eyes, the silence stretching on for what seemed like several minutes but didn’t really even close. Finally, she reopened them, focusing on Kol and only Kol. “Yes,” her lips formed the word but no sound came out.
Kol watched her cautiously, letting her take a few to process everything. While no sounds came out, he could see that she tried to answer. "Was that a yes?" He asked, just loud enough for them to hear.
Clara’s throat was dry and there was no point in trying to answer verbally. Tears slowly forming, she nodded her answer and she took a deep breath before trying to dab at her eyes before her makeup got messed up.
Kol let out a sigh of relief, putting the ring on her finger before getting up and kissed her softly, before wrapping his arms around her. "Good tears, I hope?" He whispered.
Clara watched as he slid the ring onto her finger. She kissed him back once he stood. She wrapped her arms around him tightly and nodded a little again before whispering “very good,” in his ear.
Kol relaxed more when she said they were good tears. He squeezed her a bit, smiling as he heard the claps from down below. "I love you."
“I love you too,” Clara murmured against his shoulder. She heard the claps, but she didn’t process them. All that was there right now was her and Kol.
"Custom made ring, just for you," he said with a smile, looking down at her lovingly.
Clara smiled back, kissing him softly. “It’s perfect,” she managed, her voice hoarse.
Kol kissed her back, picking up the glass of champagne and offered it to her. “Need a drink, love?” he asked.
Clara nodded in response as he asked if she needed a drink. She pulled back slowly and took the glass, taking a sip from it.
Kol smiled as she sipped the glass, slipping his arms around her waist. “Feel better?” he asked.
Clara nodded a little as he asked if she felt better. She took another sip before offering it to him.
Kol kissed the side of her head, taking the glass and took a sip. “I just want to be clear the proposal was only for a human marriage form of ‘forever.’ I am by no means pressuring or rushing you into the.. other decision,” he whispered in her ear.
Clara nodded a little as he explained. A part of her really hadn’t been entirely sure but she had know they couldn’t have the conversation with everyone’s eyes on them. Truth was, she knew she would probably turn eventually, she just wasn’t sure when.
“Do you want to dance, or do you need a few more minutes to calm down?” he asked, keeping her close. He was glowing with happiness, feeling of ecstasy rolling off him.
“We can dance,” Clara answered as he asked his question. She wasn’t sure she’d ‘calm down’ in a few minutes and she didn’t want to waste the night.
Kol nodded, taking her hand and descended the stairs with her. He kissed her cheek, smiling politely at all the ‘congratulations’ they received, before taking her to the dance floor, resting a hand on her side and began to move with the music.
Clara walked with him, smiling softly as everyone congratulated them. She was still getting used to the idea and everyone knew, it was very surreal. Once they were on the dance floor, she placed a free hand on his shoulder and danced with him.
Kol smiled down at her, kissing her cheek softly. He danced with her, holding her close as they moved together. "Are you okay?" He asked.
“I’m fine,” Clara replied, giving him a smile as he showed his concern. “I’m just in shock.” She had a feeling that would last a while, but it wasn’t a bad thing.
"Good, it means I did good at keeping it a secret," he said with a triumphant grin.
Clara laughed softly, gazing up at him. “You definitely kept it a secret,” she confirmed.
Kol smiled down at her, lovingly. If someone told him a year ago he'd be in love and engaged, he would have laughed in their face. But he was completely smitten with her. "We've been talking about it lately, and I know it's something we both wanted. I was trying to decide whether to do it tonight or our anniversary, so I talked to my twin about it," he said.
Clara smiled back up at him as they danced. It was true that they had discussed it, but she hadn’t been sure how serious he was about a future together when she knew it was the complete opposite of what he was used to. “Would our anniversary have been less public,” she teased.
Kol laughed softly, "that was twins idea too. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it private or make a spectacle. He said because we talked about it, I should go with the spectacle," he answered.
“Yes, because it’s always a good idea to have everyone’s eyes on me while making the second most important decision of my life,” Clara commented, her tone still teasing. She wasn’t mad or upset, she had just been incredibly nervous at the time.
Kol knew she was teasing him, but he could tell when she was up there that he’d made her nervous. “I’m sorry, love. I didn’t think it would make you nervous,” he said, kissing her cheek, though he made it clear he knew she wasn’t actually mad at him.
Clara gave him a smile in response. “I know,” she replied softly as she gazed up at him. “I just wasn’t expecting it and all of the eyes…”
Kol kissed her softly. "I love you and I'm glad you said yes," he said.
Clara kissed him back as softy. “I love you too,” she replied as she gazed up at him. “There was no other answer.”
He smiled down at her. “I hope that’s because you want to, and not because you didn’t want to say no in front of everybody,” he teased.
“Well, I didn’t want to say no in front of everybody,” Clara confirmed. “But I also want to marry you.”
He kissed her again, dancing with her closely.
Clara kissed him back, smiling up at him as they danced.
“This has to be one of the best nights of my life. And we both know that’s saying a lot,” he told her, smiling down at her.
Clara smiled back softly as he told her it was one of the best nights of his life. “I’m a little curious as to what beats it,” she teased.
Kol held her close. “The day we met,” he told her, completely serious.
Clara glanced up at him, raising an eyebrow. “Really?” she asked him, honestly surprised by his answer.
Kol nodded. “I didn’t know what it was then, but I knew there was something different and special about you. Without that day, we wouldn’t have this one,” he explained, smiling down at her.
Tears formed in Clara’s eyes as he spoke. She had been attracted to him when they met, of course, but she had been certain that on his end their involvement had just been blood and sex. “That’s true,” she admitted after his last statement.
Kol reached up to stroke her cheek as he saw her tears. “What’s wrong, darling?” he asked her, looking down at her with concern.
Clara shook her head a little as he asked her what was wrong. “Nothing,” she assured him as he asked her what was wrong. “I just never knew you felt that way back then.”
Kol nodded as she explained, still stroking her cheek. “I didn’t even know it back then. I just knew things were different with you. I’ve never compelled a girl to feel pleasure from the bite. I’ve had times where I’ve compelled them not to feel pain.. but never pleasure. And it was rare I actually went on ‘dates’ with women I was involved with, unless it was for appearance or because they were doing something for me. I liked our dates because I had fun,” he explained.
Clara listened as he explained the difference between her and the other girls. “I just thought you did that with all of the girls you used for blood,” she replied softly, gazing up at him. “I kinda like knowing I’m the only one, though.”
Kol gave her a smile. “It’s just you. And it will always just be you,” he told her, kissing her softly. “I love you, Clara.”
Clara smiled back softly and kissed him back. “I love you too, Kol. I always will.”
Kol kissed her forehead, brushing her hair out of her face. “I’m glad to hear it, love.”
Clara smiled softly up at him as they danced. “I can’t wait to have a future with you, Kol. Whatever that future may be.”
Kol pulled her closer while they dance. “Whether it’s a seventy year future, or a seven hundred year future, I’m looking forward to it,” he said, kissing her again.
Clara kissed him back, glad that he was willing to accept whatever future she decided.
“So we don’t have to stay any later than you want to. I’ll just have to say my goodbyes once we leave,” he told her. They’d already gotten there early, he didn’t want to make her stay until they were ready to call the party over.
“Are you suggesting we leave now?” Clara asked with a raised eyebrow.
Kol shook his head. “I’m just letting you know we don’t have to stay all night,” he told her.
Clara nodded in response. “I do kind of want to go home soon and have our own celebration for our engagement,” she told him.
Kol nodded. “We can hang out for a little while longer. Maybe another half hour?” he asked, holding her close. He wasn’t sure what kind of ‘celebration’ she wanted, but he knew they’d bought her lingerie for after the ball, so they’d probably use that, as well as whatever she wanted to do.
Clara nodded in response as he suggested a half an hour. She didn’t have to leave now and she figured that would give him some time to do what he wanted before they left.
Kol smiled, kissing her forehead, pulling her close as they danced together. He could have stayed all night, but the idea of going home and having celebration with his fiance sounded very nice as well.
Clara smiled, dancing with him as he pulled her closer. “I love you,” she murmured softly.
Kol smiled back. “I love you too, so much,” he said, resting his forehead on hers.
Clara gazed into his eyes as his forehead rested against hers. “I know I was nervous, but I’m glad you proposed.”
“I’m really glad you said yes,” he said, bringing her left hand to his lips, kissing the ring that rested over her finger. “It looks perfect on you,” he said. Of course, he wasn’t going to tell her that he’d spent $16,000 on the ring. She’d have a cow, pig, and a few chickens if she found out.
Clara smiled softly as he kissed the ring and told her it looked perfect on her. “I love it,” she replied softly.
“I’m glad you do. It’s custom made just for you,” he said. He figured she wouldn’t know just how expensive custom rings were. There were a few cheaper options, if he got a different shape, or quality diamond, but he wanted the best for her.
Clara was surprised when he said that the ring was custom made. She would have been fine with any ring. “Really?” she asked, surprised.
“Of course,” he said, a little surprised that she was surprised he’d gotten her a custom ring. “Only the best for my fiance,” he told her with a smile.
Clara smiled, kissing him softly. “That’s really sweet,” she told him once she pulled back.
Kol kissed her back. “I’m just glad you like it,” he said, holding her close as they danced.
Clara smiled, dancing closely to him, resting against him.
Kol danced with her for a little while longer, before they broke away to get ready to leave. Before they left, Anna stopped to thank him for what he’d done with Jeremy. He talked to her for a few minutes, before going to find where Clara went, interlacing their fingers. “Ready to go?” he asked her.
Clara smiled when he found her and she nodded, finishing off her drink. “I’m ready,” she replied, holding his hand.
Kol nodded, squeezing her hand, saying goodbye to a few more people, before he headed out with her.
