So I think I like this guy, we've been on a few dates and I like spending time with him, but his ex has made it very clear that doesn't like me. I don't know if she's still into him or what, but I really don't want to get involved in any kind of drama.

I'd say talk to him about it. Figure out if he has any lingering feelings for her. If he doesn't, don't worry about her. She's the ex. You don't need her approval, whether they're friends or not.
