Today was Alec’s wedding day, a day he never thought would come. When growing up and Jace was getting interested in girls, he found himself more interested in guys. There had been a few girls he had acknowledged, but never he pursued. He’d always believed his heart belonged to Jace, the straightest man he knew, therefor he knew nothing would ever come of it. Back home, he had developed a bit of a crush on Magnus, not that that had been much better. Being interested in the same sex was seriously looked down upon by the Clave, a relationship with a Downworlder was also frowned down on. The two together? Well, that would certainly be Hell.
The Lightwood name had been dragged through the mud lately, with his parents involved in the Circle, and all the laws they were breaking to help Clary. He knew he could never have a relationship with Magnus or any other guys, and he also knew he needed to do something to restore his family name. Hence the need to propose to Lydia. She was respected enough by the Clave to be an envoy, she’d expressed her interest in running an Institute and he did like her. No, when he proposed, he didn’t have romantic feelings for her. It was a political engagement and marriage, and it still was. There was just.. More now.
Alec and Lydia had kissed a few weeks ago so his first kiss wasn’t in front of their entire wedding party, and that was when he developed something. At first he thought he was deceiving himself, as he had done for years denying his sexuality, into thinking he could have feelings for the girl he was marrying, but the more time he spent with her, he knew the feelings were true. It had taken a bit for her to open up to the idea of feeling something again, and he was concerned she never would. They also had plenty of things to go through, her first husband showing up, him being told his brother was dead, and then they had a girl who said she was their daughter showed up.
When she finally decided to give him a chance at being together-together, he’d been ecstatic, but they agreed not to push back the wedding or completely call it off. They still had a job to do, and their marriage made that easier. He could see his life with her a lot clearer now though, with the feelings. When Shadowhunters found someone, they were together forever. It was very rare to do the up and down, different partners thing mundies did.
Now the wedding day had come and he was dressed in gold, Shadowhunter’s colors for weddings. He’d given Jace no option at being by his side to hold the ceremonial necklace, and Jane had recently walked down the aisle. She looked stunning and he could definitely see that he was their daughter. She took her place to wait for Lydia before everyone turned to wait for Lydia to take her walk and join Alec at the altar.
Lydia took a breath as she stood outside the room. A month ago, she wouldn’t have been this nervous about the wedding, but now she was. There were feelings involved. Alec had even told her earlier in the week that he loved her. She wasn’t there yet and she felt kinda bad about it, but he also knew her history and her feelings on love. She was trying to open her heart, trying to give a relationship tonight, but that didn’t mean it was going to be easy. That didn’t mean she could give in to everything right away.
It was time. One more breath and she walked down the aisle wearing her pale gold dress, her eyes firmly on Alec as she walked down the aisle. She knew that everyone’s eyes were on her and the thought made her stomach twinge. She made her way to the altar in front of Jem Carstairs, who she was told was once a Silent Brother officiating. She handed off the flowers to Jane before turning to Alec, a nervous smile on her face.
Alec’s breath caught when he saw Lydia come out. He hadn’t known anything about her wedding dress other than being strapless and he’d been banned from seeing her the past few hours. Alec had seen her in various stages over the past week - put together, on her lady time and in pain, soaking wet from swimming or a shower, slick with sweat after sex, what she looked like when she first woke up and every time he thought she was gorgeous. But this.. Makeup and hair done, the dress, all of it.. She looked stunning. It was almost beyond words.
He offered her a hand and helped her up to stand at the altar with him. “You look amazing,” he mouthed to her before turning to Jem. He explained the tradition of exchanging the bracelet and necklace, nothing Alec knew very much of. He hadn’t been to a wedding before, and never thought he’d get married. Either way, he’d follow tradition and turned to her, pulling a bit of his sleeve up so she’d have easier time putting on the bracelet.
“Thank you,” Lydia mouthed back before Jem started to explain. When it was time, she turned to Jane, who was holding the pillow with the bracelet on it and she picked up the bracelet before turning back to Alec, slipping it onto his wrist.
He waited as she did, before turning to Jace, picking up the necklace. They had some extent of being traditional but it was just like a wedding ring - there was a style, but different variations. He found one he thought she’d like and hoped he did as well as her actual engagement ring. He waited for her to turn, and wrapped it around her throat, trying not to fumble too much with the clasps, which proved to be harder than anticipated due to his shaking hands. He finally got it and touched her shoulder gently to let her know it was done, before taking her hand to face Jem, as he explained about the Wedded Union rune and their placement. Again he shifted his sleeve so she could start with his wrist.
Lydia had turned so that he could put the necklace on her, her eyes on Jane, giving her a smile as he put it on her. Once that was done, she turned back to face him, listening as Jem talked about the runes. She turned to Jane once more to pick up the stele and prepared it before turning to him again, stating to draw the rune onto his wrist.
Alec took a little breath at the sting of the rune. No matter how many runes he got in his life, he didn’t think the burn would ever go away, but he was definitely used to it. It was also very much worth it, this rune was binding him to Lydia. He had come to terms with the fact he was in love with her, and he’d told her as much. He was honest when he said he didn’t expect it back when he said it and he knew she was always a little behind in their relationship due to being guarded. She hadn’t freaked out and they were still together, here at the wedding. That was what mattered. He had hope in due time she’d fall in love with him to.
Once she was done with the wrist rune, he shifted to take off his clip-on tie (a choice he made simply for the reason he knew it would have to come off), giving it to Jace and undid the top buttons to expose the spot for her to draw the rune over his heart next.
Lydia could hear his breath, but she continued anyway. The runes did burn, but she also knew that as shadowhunters, it was something that they were used to. Once she was done with that one, she waited as he exposed his chest so that she could draw the next rune over his heart. She gave him an encouraging smile as she did.
Alec gazed down at her lovingly as she worked on the rune over his chest. That one definitely stung more, but he didn’t even really care, he was focused on the beautiful girl before him. The gold complimented her skin tone and hair, and everything else put together. She was just stunning, and he was so glad he’d be able to call her his wife in a few minutes. Once she finished his rune, he took his stele from Jace and followed her suit, starting with the wrist, and then moved to place it on the exposed part of her chest. Luckily her dress was cut right that she didn’t need to pull it down or anything, it was easier on them both.
Lydia set the stele back on the pillow Jane was holding before turning back to Alec when it was his turn to draw the runes. She held up her wrist for the first one, and like his the runes burned, but she was also able to get past the pain. She kept her eyes on him as he drew both runes on her.
Once he was done with the second, he put his stele back on the pillow as well, taking her hands. Jem announced them as Alec and Lydia Lightwood, and gave the cue for him to kiss her. He smiled and leaned down, kissing her gently. Had this just been political, it probably would have been a brief peck on the lips. No, he also wasn’t planning on making out with her in front of everyone, but it did have more meaning and he let it linger a bit.
Lydia linked their fingers together as he took her hands in his. She kissed him back softly, smiling against his lips as she did. It was definitely tasteful, but there was enough to remind her exactly how he felt about her. Marriage for political means or not, there was definitely still more between them.
He didn’t let it go on longer than needed. There would be plenty of time for that tonight. He pulled back slowly, gazing down at her before turning to face their crowd, helping her down to walk down the aisle with her.
