Cold weather was not unheard of. It happened every year. The lakes and even some portions of the rivers would freeze over in certain parts of her people's territory. White would cover the ground most every year at some point or another. It wasn't as if she were like the Sky People, who had never experienced things like weather. She supposed that was where Clarke's foolhardy rescue attempt came from - inexperience. They didn't understand the risks of cold weather. How chilly weather could turn icy and how that icy weather could turn fingers black and make it so that children wouldn't wake up after they closed their eyes for the night.
Lexa knew the dangers. She knew what cold could do. But trapped here, unable to maintain a fire, she also knew she couldn't survive it. She didn't have the luxury of the multitude of furs she kept back home. The crowded body heat from sharing space within the villages. Lexa was alone, with only the clothes on her body, and her only heat source had to be ruled out. One moment she had been stoking the flames of her fire to ward off the chill from the rain and cold, when there was a deafening cracking sound. Familiar with the noise, Lexa immediately dove for further back in the cave. Instants later, most of her fire was snuffed out as a tree crashed down near the entrance of her cave.
She was forced to reach out. The tree meant most smoke from any fire would remain in the cave, potentially suffocating her. Without fire, she would freeze to death. Lexa didn't like it, but she knew when to concede defeat. She had to live to make it back to her people. Lexa was poised, huddled over the smoldering remnants of her fire, when she heard voices outside the cavern entrance. She rose to her feet and approached the tree, where it twisted into her home.
"Clarke!" she called out the name of the blonde girl. Thunder cracked through the night and Lexa tried to no avail to see beyond the branches of the tree. She could hear someone chopping away and Lexa couldn't believe she actually felt relieved at the fact Sky People had come to her aid. "I am fine!" Part of Lexa was annoyed at what she felt was a rather patronizing tone from Clarke, but another part of her was just glad help had arrived relatively quickly. Her teeth were beginning to chatter, but Lexa did her best to swallow it back. While she was grateful for the help of the Sky People, she would not show weakness in front of them. "You cannot remain out here long. If you cannot do this quickly, you will have to leave." If Clarke wanted her to talk, Lexa could explain to her just how dangerous cold weather could be. "You will die."
She watched as the branches were steadily chipped away at. For all of Clarke's downfalls, Lexa had to concede that the blonde was incredible at cultivating loyalty among her followers.
