You don't get to make up the rules as you go along, Mary. I was born first, therefore I'm the older one. [ She maybe older than him in years here, but there is no way that Steve is going to think of her as his older sister. She's always going to be his little sister, even if she was in her thirties and it's always going to be his job to watch out for her. Although he never did get a chance to ask his Dad how he was supposed to do that if they weren't living together. ]
That's called swimming. It's different than surfing. [ He grins, enjoying the tease and fake misunderstandings. ] Try not to get them confused. One's in the water, the other is on a board riding the waves. And I do both just fine, thank you!
Yeah... me too. [ Steve nods in agreement. ] It's good to see you again. It's only been a couple of weeks but it's seemed like forever since... Well, you know... Before Mom died.
[ At the mention of Dad, Steve looks away. He's extremely angry with their father but had been raised to only regard him in the utmost respect. His father's approval and acknowledgement means everything to Steve and while he completely agrees with Mary's assessment he can't bring himself to be disrespectful and verbally agree. It doesn't matter that their father turning his back on them has been harder to deal with then their mother dying. Then again, he's really not dealt with either. ]
