Mary Anne's insult stung, not just for him, but for Cokie. But when she said she loved him, he just deflated. This whole thing was a rollercoaster, and he wanted off.
"I'm doing this for my baby," he said finally, not able to tell her he loved her. Because it wasn't right, not matter what he did feel, or had felt, it didn't matter, and it wasn't fair to Cokie. He felt torn between wanting to consol Mary Anne, and being loyal to his fiance.
Fiance.
"That's what it's all for," he said, turning to Mary Anne.
