Re: Spap
No, you don't owe anyone. You didn't put them in bad situations. You didn't make those bad people lie and cheat and steal and hurt children.
My father was the same way. He got back from the war and was labeled a hero, but he'd beat my mom and me relentlessly. I tried to stop him, and it didn't work. It only stopped when he died from the flu. That flu killed my baby brother too, he didn't even have a name yet. Then when I was 18, my mom died of the Spanish flu. She was a saint, but she never left him, no matter how bad it got for any of us. If she did have a choice to send me away to save her marriage, I'm sure she'd do the same as your mom did.
These things just happen, kid, and they'll keep happening. The worst part of your life isn't over yet. It might not have even started. You will get stronger, and as you do, you'll have to decide which side you want to be on. People with strength like us, we don't get to just sit on the sidelines.
Either you're going to be like our fathers were, bullies, or you'll be who you were meant to be. Standing up to your father even though you knew you'd lose, that's what I chose. That's what Jean sees in you, that's who you could choose to be.
And people won't ever thank you. I'm a wanted criminal in my world. I saved the world 4 times over now, and I can't walk down the street outside of a disguise or I'll be carted away to some unmarked prison. Being a hero doesn't mean you get glory or thanks, or even treated like a human being. You have to do it for yourself. Win or lose. You have to choose to fight every time, or the bad guys win. Ask yourself if you're okay with that.
