"Hey, hey, hey," Jay said, voice taking a shushing, soothing tone. He didn't like t he shine to James' eyes, like he might cry, which was all sorts of ridiculous, and he might've laughed if it was any other guy. But James was small, and bleeding, and about to start tearing up and he looked...like he needed to be protected, but saying so would be insulting, so he kept the urge to hold him close and find a way to stop his hurt to himself.
"Don't you lie," he warned, a little bit amused. "I've been where you are, I nearly am where you are, neither of us needs our brains leaking out our ears tonight. That'll get us in a lot more trouble." He left his hand on James' cheek, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth and looking at the boy with concern.
