"I would rather not be covered in mud when my jeans are already soaked through, hon," she said, glaring. "It has nothing to do with being dirty and everything to do with the fact that I'm already wet and cold and don't need to add to that."
"It was totally life and death," Sam said, a completely blank and serious expression on her face before she broke out in a grin. "As in, I'm going to go die laughing now." She released his wrists and gave him a friendly smack on the shoulder before moving to stand in front of him.
Almost immediately she regretted it, as he condescendingly wagged his finger at her. "Oh, you did not just insult me. You should know better than to do that. Now I'm going to have to kick your ass and prove you wrong." In all honesty, on a good day, she could keep up with him. He was taller, with longer legs, and generally built more athletically than she was. He had still just insulted her fitness, which she was quite proud of, and she would do her damned best to prove that he could at least not run circles around her.
