I put my data pad on the coffee table and ran my hands through my hair, grown long since my Knighting. My fourth sleepless night was starting to catch up with me. I yawned for the second time and grabbed the blanket that was thrown over the back of the couch. I might have missed Obi-Wan's door slipping open right then if he hadn't come stumbling out. The last three nights he'd at least stayed in his room.
"I must..."
"You must what?" I asked, finally turning to look at him.
At first I might have thought him only very relaxed, but no. His head lolled to the left; his face was slack. His arms drooped at his sides like those of a rag doll.
"You're dreaming again," I said, standing up and walking slowly toward him.
As if by instinct, he shied away from me, moving around to the other side of the couch. I let him go, not reaching. This was not the first time he'd had vigorous dreams. Normally they plagued him when we were on the front, but we had just come off a dangerous mission.
Obi-Wan stretched out an arm and his lightsaber flew to his palm with a soft thud. He turned his head to look at me. Through me. His eyes had rolled completely back, revealing only crescents of white.
"I must do this," he murmured to no one but himself.
"Obi..." The lightsaber clicked on softly. I took another step forward, my words much louder this time. "Master, you're dreaming."
"It is my duty." He whorled with the lightsaber, striking at an invisible target. His movements were slower, less dynamic than usual. His paused, face contorting as if with pain. "The children, they have to get away, but I can't--I can't kill--"
"Obi-Wan!" I shouted as loud as I could, loud enough that I am sure our closest neighbors heard.
Slowly he surrendered, drawing his blade into Form Zero--the decision to not use your lightsaber at all. The blue light cast eerie shadows on his face. He shuddered once, briefly, like a man run through, and then Obi-Wan's body went limp, his saber clicking off as he crumpled to the floor. I stood there a moment, blinking, stunned.
I swallowed, giving his thigh a nudge with my toe. "Obi-Wan?"
He moaned low in his throat and rolled onto his side. A moment later he tried to sit and moaned louder, clutching his head. "What... happened?"
"You were dreaming again," I said, helping him up and over to the couch. "What was it this time?"
Obi-Wan pulled the blanket onto his lap, his answer the same as it had been on the last four nights. "A monster."
"What kind of monster?" I settled in next to him, an arm sliding around his shoulders thoughtlessly. It was not an unfamiliar position.
He shuddered and looked up at me. "A terrible one wrapped in leather and durasteel, one I hope to never meet again."
"But who was he?"
"I don't know," he whispered, curling into me. "I don't want to."
