When First Contact was first released there were rumors floating around that one of the characters, Lieutenant Hawk, was meant to be Star Trek's first gay character. Paramount denied that this was the case, but whether or not it was meant to be, the writing partners Andy Mangels and Michael Martin took the idea and ran with it when they wrote the book Rogue for the Section 31 series. The book takes place 6 months before First Contact and Hawk (given the name Sean Liam) plays an important role in the plot. He also has a boyfriend of two years, Ranul.

I kind of latched onto the idea of Hawk being gay when I first heard about it, and when Dan decided he wanted to make a Star Trek game, I convinced him to let me play Ranul. As far as I knew at the time, Hawk was the first gay character in the extended universe literature (which turned out to be false. In fact there is a large population of queer characters in the books) and Ranul seemed to have been created especially for me since the Trill are my favorite Federation race.

I started role playing with Star Trek games way back in 1997 (PBeM represent, yo!). In that community, canon characters of any kind are strictly forbidden and it's generally frowned upon for the character you play to personally know any of the major series characters at all, so Ranul is a major departure for me. Not only did he serve on the Enterprise-E, but shares a war-forged bond with Picard and can call Ezri Dax a close friend (These details come from Rogue and the second book he appears in, Unjoined).

Welcome to the Star Trek: Beta Quadrant RPG. In this community please feel free to introduce yourself and your character(s). You can also use this community as a forum to share ideas, concerns, and questions regarding the game. The planned starting date is July 1st, 2009.

As a short note about me, I've been a trekkie since I was kid. I decided to create this game in hopes of uniting people just like me on a community that doesn't have many Trek RPGs. I was inspired by the latest movie, but have great attachment to the more modern universe and wanted to move toward the future. Through my own inspiration and some help and guidance from my friends, it's taken a lot of my free time to create this game. Even more improvements are on there way! Be respectful and creative, but most importantly I want everyone to enjoy themselves.

to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out
here. It's wondrous - with treasures to satiate desires both
subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."
