"Fall back, Darius give them cover!" Rikki's orders rattled about in Darius' head as he found himself not in the thick of the battle amongst the Jedi but instead holed up with the sounds of fighting nearby. His blaster molded to his hand, he kept a close watch on the doorway that was all that really stood between them and everything else. He should be out there with the rest, making sure that no one else fell. But someone had and that's why he was here, watching after a Jedi and Lyric. Truth be told Lyric had always been too pale for his own good. Too much time in the Undercity and somehow it'd taken this long for him to catch someone's eye to drag him out. But now? Now he looked like the white of the dead, eyes closed and hair too dark as the blood drained from his face. Which really meant it was draining elsewhere. Darius had seen men and women die like that, all mashed up on the inside. It wasn't pretty. So he stood watch like Rikki told him to because he followed orders no matter what anyone else might say. "You okay back there, doc?" he asked without looking back at Jacen. "Just watch the door," Jacen snapped without really thinking about it. He was not okay - a long way from it in fact. He was also not a doc and despite the fact that he had a general proclivity towards healing at the moment he was desperately wishing for Cilghal or Tikla or even his Uncle. But right now he had none of the above, but rather only himself and what he knew about the Force and the man he loved as much as he loved himself who was too silent and too pale. "Hang in there, Lyric," Jacen spoke softly as he focused in on the man on the ground in front of him. As best they could tell this had been some sort of slave village but it currently stood empty and the hut they were in was nothing to speak of. Nothing clean or decent and a horrible place to try to do any medical work but it was at least somewhat sheltered from the sounds of the fighting. Jacen could feel Jaina, and others who were pouring back strength and belief and determination in their own way and Jacen focused in on Lyric, the rest of it all fading away to a rush of white noise in his ears, the strength in the a Force that he could feel like a chair he was sitting in - there, but not consciously so. Jacen reached into the Force, the focus on the presence of the man in front of him - a presence that was weaker than Jacen had ever felt it. Something was terribly wrong, and it was up to Jacen to find it and fix it. They had bacta patches and they had basic supplies, but there was no bacta tank here, no surgeons droid, no medical attention like Jacen could have rushed him to on Coruscant had they been in the Undercity. Just Jacen, and the Force, and sheer determination to not let this man fade out. The galaxy needed Lyric alive. Jacen needed him alive. He closed his eyes, relying only on what the Force could tell him. He knew what the body should feel like and as he focused, he could begin to sense the broken places, bleeding, too much where it shouldn't be and it was drowning him in places where it should never have flowed. Hold onto me Lyric. But this time the words weren't spoken aloud or even consciously thought - they were breathed, felt as much as they were anything else. One of his hands found Lyric's face and Jacen placed it on Lyric's forehead. For a moment not much more than the whisper of a prayer before he moved the hand down to Lyric's abdomen, seeking those breaks in the dam that should be holding it back, trying to stimulate with the Force the growth of cells. If Lyric had been a Jedi he could have pulled on Lyric's own strength to help with this, but that wasn't an option here. And neither was failing. He persisted, eyes closed, senses extended, and his awareness of the room around him nearly nonexistent. Well okay then. He'd watch the door. Not like he hadn't been anyway. Still he couldn't fault Jacen for the terse word. If he didn't do some kind of Jedi magic Lyric wasn't going to make it through the next few hours. While Darius had never really gotten to know the kid, the old man had been fond enough of him. Honestly hard to say who had seen more of the old man, him or Lyric and Elix. If the gangly kid died on Darius' watch he could only imagine that his ass was about to get haunted even more than it already was for letting the old man get himself slaughtered by the Peace Brigade. Looking over at Jacen though, there was something in the air outside of the panic towards losing a member of the squad. This was closer to what he'd expect if it was Rikki or Jaina under Jacen's hands. There as the slight tremble, the paleness that came from panic being held at bay by nothing but sheer will. There was an eerie stillness to the whole affair as he stood watch, blaster in hand and waited to hear anything that wasn't news of Lyric dying right in front of them. The Jedi was going to get him back on his feet, that's just how it was going to have to be. Darius wasn't explaining to that crazy little Rodian that Lyric's body was all they were bringing back. She'd probably shoot him and what would be the point of surviving the mission then? So far they hadn't been spotted though, which at least was good for now. How long was this supposed to take? Droids, bacta, that stuff he could time and understand but the Force? It wasn't like Rikki had given him a rundown of what to expect when it came down to her friend's magic powers. Minutes ticked by with Jacen's silence where he was doing, well, something. Lyric couldn't describe the feeling as anything other than cold. His mind drifted to the idea that maybe he was somehow back in the bath too long with Jacen. The idle thought drifted until the foggy veil of reality sank in. He felt numb, too weak to move but as his eyes fluttered opened he could see Jacen looking down at him. For some reason he looked concerned. Why was he so tired? "Hey." he rasped out, a weak twitch of a smile. Jacen couldn't help but feel that it had been too long. That it was taking too long for anything. He had held and mended, reached out into the Force to stimulate cell growth. Everything he knew how to do Jacen had done it and then he had fallen into holding Lyric's hand, his focus mostly on the other man in the Force rather than the outside world. He was vaguely aware of the fact that the others were headed back in their direction, the fighting problem having apparently been solved. He was about to lift his head to tell Darius this when Lyric's sense shifted and for a moment Jacen was afraid that he'd not been able to do enough - but then there was a word so weak and quiet that Jacen almost didn't hear it aloud, but just a whisper in the Force enough to say that Lyric was awake. The relief was like dropping a heavy pack from his shoulders. Rationally he could tell himself that he was a long way from being out of the woods. They were in enemy territory with almost nothing in the way of truly helpful supplies to think of. And Lyric still looked as pale as Hoth snow, but he was speaking and Jacen couldn't help the relief at simply being able to talk to him. "Lyric," he breathed softly, his hands moved to find Lyric's hand, one reaching up to smooth hair back from his face gently. "Hey... You don't need to talk if you don't feel up to it." Slowly the world started to make sense again. He wasn't on Coruscant or the Falcon. He was on whatever backwater world it was that they were trying to do something on. It was something for Rikki, he knew that. Her name hung in his mind as something important to all of this. And he was hurt, that made sense. Or at least it had to make sense. He couldn't feel anything which by the look no Jacen's face was probably a good thing. Just how badly hurt was he? Enough that Jacen looked about ready to fall over. "Sorry." he managed to cough out, the words thick on his tongue as he gripped onto Jacen's hand as soon as he could feel it. He vaguely remembered being cornered, separated out from the rest by a warrior. Why were the Vong so damn ugly? Something had happened. Something bad. But he was awake, that was important right? Darius looked over at them as he heard Lyric's voice. The kid was awake, good. When he hadn't been entirely expecting was to see Jacen and Lyric's hands threading together. But once the observation was noted Darius felt that it explained more than it didn't. Lyric was an attractive kid, it made sense he'd try to net a Solo. And given that Anakin seemed to only have eyes for Rikki that did narrow the options. Either way it wasn't any of his concern as long as Jacen was able to keep focused on the mission. He could hear footsteps coming, his blaster cocked and aimed at the door. "We've company, you two." Jacen was so relieved, but he could also feel how weak Lyric was. He might be awake, but he probably shouldn't be for long. But now that he was, maybe Jacen could actually work to stabilize him a bit, put him back into a trance more specifically, but that might take time that they wouldn't have. On the other hand, he couldn't move like this. But his plans were interrupted by Darius' words, which reminded him that he'd been about to say something to Darius about what he'd felt in the Force. "They're friendly," he looked up from Lyric towards Darius. "It's Jaina and Tenel Ka I think - the others are further out. I mean be cautious, but I don't think I'm wrong." He turned his focus back on Lyric in the moment, his fingers still against Lyric's. Lyric's grasp felt weaker than it should, but it wasn't particularly a surprise considering everything. There was still a lot of uncertainty regarding Lyric's condition and he still wished that he had Cilghal here, or a medical droid, or a bacta tank. But he had none of those things and so far Jacen had been enough. "Don't worry about it- " Jacen words to Lyric were soft and his touch seeking to be comforting. "I'm going to put some pressure here, and I need you to tell me what hurts - all right? Can you do that?" Darius spared a raised eyebrow in Jacen's direction before putting his attention back on the door. The force was wasted on force sensitives if it pulled out information like that. "Useful trick that." he commented almost under his breath, more out of not wanting to distract the healer than anything. This wouldn't be the first time he had pulled guard duty and it likely wouldn't be the last unless the Vong decided to painfully slaughter him. But he was hoping to avoid that. Still his weapon was kept trained and ready just in case it wasn't Jacen's lovely sister and the redhead that didn't laugh at any of his jokes who wasn't Rikki. Either would be a welcome sight over a Vong decided to poke their ugly head in to be used for target practice. Lyric wanted to help, wanted to be able to focus and tell Jacen what he needed to know. Honestly Lyric wanted to give Jacen anything he could, any answer he might ever need. But right now his head was clouded and he could barely keep his eyes open. He tried to focus in on Jacen's voice, the warm rumble that felt like home but was threaded with concern. "It's numb." he stumbled out, trying to hold onto Jacen's hand tighter. "Can I sleep?" Jacen's brow furrowed slightly, numb didn't seem good. On one hand, it was better than Lyric being in pain and agony, but on the other - he managed to pull a smile out instead, worrying creeping back in to wrap itself around his heart, but he ignored it as he looked down at Lyric with eyes that held warmth and affection and as much hope as he could muster - Lyric would be all right. He had to be all right. For a moment he ignored the sound of Tenel Ka and Jaina arriving. He shifted his body so that he could keep one hand with Lyric's while the other he touched along Lyric's side. "You're not feeling any of that?" he asked softly. "Just listen to my voice, Lyric, and we'll get you some rest in just a moment." He focused in through the Force trying to feel the broken places within Lyric's body. His sense was that there were fewer fluids than there had been, that perhaps even he'd been able to encourage back together. But even with those small encouragements he could feel that it wasn't right, and he was certain that the cells at the most basic levels were as exhausted as Lyric looked as a whole. "You were badly injured," he continued softly, holding onto talking to keep Lyric awake as he focused on what information he could gather as he worked his way down the other boy's side. "You've been sleeping for a bit here, and I just want to make certain of some things before you go back to sleep, all right? Then we'll let you rest. I'll put you into a healing trance to help your body mend itself more quickly. You can play at being a Jedi for the night," his lips quirked up into a smile that Jacen was struggling to feel. "But only one night or I might get jealous," he added, teasing gently as he pushed against Lyric's rib. After a gentle push he considered and then worked the button's loose so he could actually see what it looked like on the skin, not just in the Force. While Jacen worked Tenel Ka and Jaina had stepped into the hut, welcoming Darius briefly. "How is he?" Jaina asked the other boy, her eyes taking in Jacen's position, and her eyebrows furrowing slightly at the closeness of her brother to Lyric even as she dismissed it as necessary to heal someone. "We got a number of the group, and they've left to the south, but we don't know for how long." "And they know we're here now," Tenel Ka spoke calmly but not as softly as Jaina. "Our travel just got more dangerous." "There's pressure." Lyric blinked, trying to focus in on Jacen. Even just looking to Jacen was more tiring than it should be. What was going on? Was he dying? He really couldn't die here. Elix was still a kid, she'd be all alone. And if he was going to die in some godforsaken rathole he wanted that rathole to be Coruscant. But he could see the pain behind Jacen's smile, how much strain there was in his eyes. All he wanted to do was reach out and hold him, to let Jacen know it was going to be okay. But that seemed almost too much, his body too weighed down to reach up and hold him. He could see more than feel Jacen pulling his shirt open. Was it that bad? It had to be that bad if Jacen was trying to get a better look. But Jacen wouldn't let him die, not here. His Jedi would never let him die someplace like this. "Don't think I'm up for that." his laugh was weak, choked off at the specks of blood that found their way to his lips. Oh. That wasn't good. Darius looked over at Tenel Ka and tried to place her. He'd dealt with some literal people in his day but this girl seemed to take the whole bounty on that. It was almost like talking to the prettiest block of steel he could find. "Tell me something I don't know, Red." he sighed playfully with a pale imitation of a smile, keeping an eye on the doorway behind them. "But he's awake. Which is better." Darius let his eyes stray to Lyric, the smile fading away to a frown. "I've seen guys like that before though. Maybe your force whatever can help stall it but we don't get him somewhere better soon and it's not going to end well for the kid." Jacen had no idea why there would be pressure but no pain. It felt as if as pale as Lyric was, and as bad as he looked that there had to be pain - and if Lyric wasn't feeling it, then why wasn't he feeling it? Was there some sort of paralysis? What was Jacen not thinking of here? What did he need to be doing that he wasn't doing. He kept the smile on his lips even though it couldn't reach his eyes as he moved the jacket and shirt back to examine the skin. No cuts, but there was swelling and discolouration that looked all the worse for how pale Lyric was. Jacen swallowed, his mind frantically racing through options, but he wasn't a healer. Maybe if he put one of the bacta patches on the skin it would help the body underneath - it with the Force would it be enough? "Hey," he said softly, his attention pulled back to Lyric's face as Lyric started coughing. He moved his hand under Lyric's head gently and reached for a cloth to wipe his lips off gently, his hand moved to rest gently against Lyric's forehead for an instant, pushing warmth and affection and strength through the Force into the touch. Lyric needed every piece of help he could get right now. "I've got you." "Zekk's here, I'm going to go check surrounding area," Jaina told Darius and Tenel Ka. "We'll keep it as free as we can for as long as we can." Tenel Ka normally would have joined them, or possibly punished the skinny stringy-haired co-pilot for his terrible nicknames, but her eyes had caught on Jacen. They had been friends for too long and she had never seen him quite like this. She frowned. "You should go with her," she told Darius. "I can hold things here." He felt... something. Beneath the numbness there was a surge of something that felt like Jacen, like the way Jacen made him feel when it was just the two of them and Jacen honestly smiled. Right now he could tell that smile was nothing but pain, that this was bad enough that Jacen was worried. But Jacen always worried, always fretted, much like he did. And while Jacen might panic what Jacen would never do was let him down. Lyric knew that in his heart. "I know." he coughed, weakly pulling up a smile that quickly fell away. Jacen had him so it was all going to be all right. Meanwhile Darius was left with the grumpiest Jedi that he had ever met, dying lovebirds, and the pretty Solo had gone off. Hopefully Rikki was bringing up the rear soon with the sisters and the Rodian because the party wasn't yet cramped enough. And if they had anymore serious injuries Darius had his doubts on just how much focus Jacen was willing to take away from Lyric. "Surprisingly, you're not the boss." Darius offered, tone light and easy. But he jerked his head over towards Jacen. "Can you help him at all?" the question was honest and he kept an eye on Tenel Ka out of the corners while he kept his vision on their point of entry. "I don't know this force stuff. Because I'm staying put, the boss ordered." "Suit yourself." Tenel Ka said, nonplussed by Darius' insistence on staying put. She wasn't the team leader here and despite the fact that she would be perfectly capable, perhaps more capable of protecting Jacen and Lyric should it come to that, she was not bothered by him staying here. But she also wasn't leaving Jacen right now and the knowledge of that had hit her more soundly than she had anticipated. Her friend needed her, she could sense that, and Darius' follow-up question pulled her attention back to him for a moment. "I don't know," she said softly. But it was enough to prompt her to step forward towards Jacen and Lyric. Tenel Ka was not particularly a healer, but she had determination and faith in the Force in quantity enough to share. Jacen ran his thumb across Lyric's forehead gently before pulling his attention back to his side. This time it was to open a cleansing cloth and clean the skin that was swollen and discoloured. He had to stop to push his hair behind his ear as it seemed to have finally grown long enough to keep dropping in his eyes as he worked. The skin cleansed he reached for one of the bacta patches, peeling off the activation paper, and trying to sort the best way to put it on. "What can I do," Tenel Ka's voice was soft in his ear, and her hand on his shoulder made him feel as if they would all make it through this despite his own uncertainties. The bond between the Jedi was still open - technically - but this was maybe even underlying that bond, the bond of friendship and of knowing each other well enough to see past the attempts to hide emotion. Jacen looked up - and his eyes met her grey ones - and for an instant he wasn't certain what to say. But there was no time with that so he nodded. "I need to - can you get on the other side - hold the shirt back. If we can get the bacta applied maybe it can start working there. I've -" he hesitated, but Tenel Ka was already positioning herself on the other side of Lyric, and her hand began to work with the jacket. Jacen pulled his attention back to the work in front of him, and strengthened briefly by Tenel Ka's belief, he could offer a smile back to Lyric. "We're going to put a bacta patch on your side. It'll possibly feel a bit tingly - I don't know if you've been in bacta before - but it'll start working on healing the damage done there." "It is good to see you awake," Tenel Ka said aloud as Jacen worked. When she reached into the Force and found Jacen she could find the worry and the hurt, the determination, glimpses of what he had done for Lyric already, and glimpses of something more - what could possibly be described as an underlying fear of what might happen to him. She pushed back on that fear with faith. Jacen could do this. Jacen had brought Lyric back to wake up. He had clearly begun the healing process already. They had bacta, and at least a bit of time. Lyric was speaking with them both. Jacen would do this. She had seen him do so much throughout their training together. "Jacen." Lyric's voice was soft, weak, reaching out when he couldn't do so himself. Part of him registered that Tenel Ka was there, his eyes looking and searching for the bright red hair that was a different shade than Rikki's. Where was Rikki? Was she okay? She had to be, there's no way Jacen would have left her behind. But why was Tenel Ka here? Was she a healer? He didn't remember her being a healer. "Jacen." he said again softly as his head turned again and he focused back onto Jacen's face. He could see Jacen, even if at times it felt like maybe the edges were blurring out. Jacen would do whatever he could to try and fix this, Lyric knew. More than anything he wanted Jacen to know but he couldn't put the words together and he didn't have the Force to reach out with. For the first time in his life he almost wished he could, just so he could reach out to try and ease the worry wrinkling Jacen's forehead and to let him know that it would all be okay. "I'm tired." was all he managed instead. Whatever Red was doing hopefully it was going to help. It might be possible to get Lyric back to the ship. While it wasn't the best option at least the ship was more defend-able than holed up here. But Darius was running through just who they had to spare to get the kid back to some semblance of safety so he didn't bleed out on the Yuuzhan Vong's floor. Right now that was Rikki's call but he was trying to keep from getting antsy as the minutes ticked by and he didn't see his redhead in sight. And as if he wished her into existence those familiar goggles popped into view down the scope of his blaster. "It's just us." Rikki commented quickly, hand up as she looked over at Lyric. Her lips pursed tight and Darius motioned her in so she could take her place next to him and look over. "I can't stay long, we should keep moving." "He's not going to be moving, boss." Darius looked over at her. "Only reason he's alive is his jedi." He could have sworn he saw a bit of a twitch, her registering just what he said. So she knew. Well that made it a little less awkward didn't it. "We can't leave him here." and there was that determination and spark that he liked so much about her. Darius' easy smile came back, tempered with the grim situation unfolding around them. Watching her with her shoulders back, the orders easy on her tongue, Rikki in motion was a thing of beauty. Most people didn't take to leadership naturally but for as awkward as she was on her own put her in the middle of a battle and you just couldn't help but look to her. And there was no disappointing Rikki Barnes. He had been on the receiving end of being chewed out too many times for that. "Someone's going to have to stay with him then. Like I said, it doesn't look good." There was no mistaking the softness with which Lyric spoke Jacen's name. Tenel Ka knew they were friends and had been for some months but it held more to it despite the injuries - or maybe because of them. She hadn't seen either of them let their guards down like this the entire trip and it wasn't the issue she knew, but when she looked across to watch Jacen's hands and the look in his eyes, she couldn't help but want to reach out to touch his hand. She resisted instead waiting for further instructions. "Thanks," Jacen said softly in Tenel Ka's direction as he checked the edges of the bacta patch to make certain they were there. "It's all right Lyric," he said gently. "Here," his hand reached down to find Lyric's and it threaded his fingers into Lyric's. "I'm going to help your rest now. I think Rikki's here, so just close your eyes all right? You're going to be fine. I've got you." He reached into the Force. He had never done a healing trance on another person who wasn't a Jedi. He knew in theory it could be done. He'd done it for Jaina before but it was Jaina, his twin, and the person closest to him of anyone. Except that recently he and Lyric had gained a closeness. And Lyric might not be Force sensitive, but Jacen knew Lyric. He'd spent the past few months memorizing every part of him in the Force, every inch of his body, and he knew he had to succeed. Lyric's chance of living very likely depended upon him doing so. It was different, finding the places where healing could be stimulated, but they were there if more difficult to uncover and more challenging to pull out. Jacen furrowed in focus and could feel Tenel Ka pressing her strength into his and he dropped his walls, letting her in, knowing she would have access to everything -- but the things Jacen Solo would do for the boy in front of him... When he finally pulled out there was sweat on his brow despite the fact that he'd done nothing physical and he couldn't look at Tenel Ka. Instead he slowly released Lyric's hand and turned around, pulling himself to his feet to face Rikki. "He's in a healing trance right now, but if he has any hope of living we can't move him," he repeated what he'd half heard Darius explain in the back of his mind, his voice surprisingly calm as he stepped towards Rikki. Considering the reality he was certain they were faced with and the low chances of survival he was pretty certain he was the calmest. Jacen had him. That was all Lyric needed to know. It became too much to keep his eyes open, what he could feel of his body slowly slipping away into the cocoon that felt like Jacen wrapped around him. It was brighter than that, more than just the man he loved more than life itself. But in his mind this was so clearly Jacen Solo that Lyric couldn't help but fall easily into it's trance. Would he wake up? He had to, his Princess had him and there was no way that he wouldn't be able to find his way back knowing that. But if they couldn't move him. Rikki crossed her arms as she looked over at Lyric. It was a fluke in the fighting that had separated him. Any one of them could have been cornered, Lyric had just been the one to pull the short end of the stick first. They needed to keep moving, the mission had to be completed now more than ever since the Yuuzhan Vong knew they were there. But leaving Lyric behind was not an option either. He was her first real friend in this world, a person she could rely on above probably anyone else. And it was her fault he was in this situation to begin with. "This place isn't defendable. If we leave him, even with a watch, they'll be overrun." Rikki resisted the urge to drop down to Lyric's side. "There's the ship. If somehow we could get him on it." Darius offered, tilting his head slightly to bring his ear closer to the conversation. Jacen cleared his mind to try to focus on the situation and the reality outside of the fact that it felt like he'd just wrapped his heart around Lyric as a part of the trance. He felt rather than saw Tenel Ka come up behind him and he furrowed his brow slightly. "He's got to have at least a few hours," Jacen repeated. "I don't know-" and his voice genuinely fell out from under him so that he had to tighten his fist and push forward intentionally. "He's got internal injuries, I don't have a specific way to diagnose what. I've got the bacta patch on him which should help, but he needs an actual tank and probably a med droid. The trance, if given time to work, will probably buy him the time to get there. But he needs that time." "Someone would have to take him back to the ship," Numa Rar and her sister had stepped up behind Rikki. Alema still had her lightsaber in her hand and it looked as if she'd sustained some cuts in the scuffle, but nothing so terrible that she would need more than a cleaning. "But he needs at least three or four hours before he gets moved," Jacen repeated. "Do we know how much further?" Tenel Ka's voice was quiet but it held her typical edge of determination. "A few hours if we keep pushing." Rikki answered Tenel ka's question as she watched Lyric. She knew Jacen was right and that there would be no moving him for at least a few more hours. They had made better time than she had initially planned for, even with the run in with the Vong. But they did have a better layout of the terrain now that they were actually here and had eyes on the ground. With the burst of energy form the fight she knew the worst was going to be ahead of them. There was every reason to take a break, to ground themselves and dole out duties prior to heading back out. Because once they left then there would be no stopping. "We'll make camp for a few hours." Rikki's eyes went immediately to Jacen's, knowing that at least the panic she knew would be boiling up could be contained for the moment. "We'll figure out who will be heading back to the ship with Lyric. Which means they'll be who is on board when the slave circuits kick in. Which isn't the worst option to have." "We've three targets to plant explosives by that'll destabilize the entire lab structure and bring down everything." she fell back into the patter of the plan, knowing they all knew it by heart at this point. "We all know our groups and our targets. We'll take a few hours to rest, rotating watch schedule. Once that's up though that's the end, we have to get our targets. They know we're here and since there's nothing else on Myrkr they have to know what we're after. This is our one shot." |
