Ah now they ventured into awkward land! Topher wanted to kick himself in the foot for that, only he didn't think he could manage it exactly without totally drawing attention to the fact that he was doing it.
"Well hey," he said, trying to get the smile to come back to what it had been. "These things happen sometimes in the line of duty. You wouldn't believe the crazy stuff security had to deal with when I was doing my rotations. Personally, I'd rather know you're doing a good job keeping all of us safe." Because, yeah... Crazy drunks in the E.R around four am had taught him all about that and were one of the reasons he'd run in the completely other direction as soon as his degree was in his hands.
"Besides," he added, "It's not like I'd have been able to do all that much on my own. I'm not exactly the most adept at dealing with that kind of thing. It's good you were around."
