Narrative: Milestone
Who: Rob (closed narrative)
Where: the Jenkins home
When: Monday, July 7th
NPCs: Lacey and Travis (Rob's mom and brother)
Rob tromped through the grass toward the modest home, his kid brother wriggling on his shoulders. Travis loved getting rides from Rob and he held on tight to the half-giants ears and squealed and giggled as Rob purposely gave him a bumpy ride back to the house after playing together in the yard for a while. Rob pulled him off as they reached the back door and shooed him in first. "Go wash your hands, booger", Rob told him. "Smells like dinner's almost ready." As Travis ran off toward the bathroom, Rob turned and ducked through the doorway into the kitchen. His mother, Lacey, was in there, standing near the pantry, a stepladder set up beside her. The half-giant heard a sniff and saw that her eyes looked a little glassy, as if she'd been crying.
"Aw, Ma, what're you doing?", Rob asked, though he already knew.
"I wanted you to get a new measure", Lacey answered weakly, though she tried to put on a brave face. "We forgot to on your birthday, and it looks... looks like your head's nearly scraping the ceiling now."
"It's not that bad", Rob told her, crossing the room to where she was. Beside the pantry was a series of marks on the door frame and the wall above. There were measurements for Travis's height on the lower half of the door frame. Above it were marks for Rob's growth. "Fine, make it quick", Rob grumbled, putting his back to the doorframe. His mother picked up a pencil and climbed up the ladder. She was up there for a few moments. "What's takin' so long?"
"You really are up to the ceiling", Lacey told him. She carefully climbed down once she'd made her mark. Looking up at the new mark, it looked to be not even an inch from where the wall and ceiling met. "Get me the tape measure", she asked Rob.
"Ma..."
"Just get it, please!"
"Okay, okay..." Rob crossed their kitchen and opened a drawer that contained a variety of things. He shuffled a few things around, frowning. "I don't see it. You really gotta clean this thing out sometimes... there it is." Rob walked over with it and took the measurement himself, stretching the tape out from the floor to the new mark. He was silent as he pulled it down and they both looked at it.
Eight foot.
Lackey's eyes looked glassy again. This time, Rob's did too. "I grew again...", he muttered. "Didn't knew I grew that much..." He had trouble keeping the shake out of his voice. He felt his mother hug him tightly around the waist.
"It's okay, baby", she told him. "Guess it'll just be time for a new house soon", she said, trying to laugh. "I'll get the Coach working on that. I always did like vaulted ceilings."
