"Come on, Nate. You're slowing us down," Wesley called over his shoulder, sharing a look with Katie. Nate had been acting strange all night ever since they met up at the entrance of the road towards St. Margaret's Academy. It was understandable, Wesley figured, since they were sneaking out there to watch for signs of the dark creature they had spotted from the road a few weeks ago. Their regular vigils hadn't paid off yet, but Wesley was hopeful, having a feeling that this would be the night.
"Just relax," Katie said and slowed up for Nate to catch up to her. She looked at her redheaded friend and offered a smile, shining her flashlight just to the side so as not to blind him. "It's not like we're going to get caught."
"Yeah, and those kids who go to St. Margaret's are too rich and snobby to be out this late on the road." Wesley said, distaste in his voice. "Weirdo freaks." There was just something about the students from the boarding school back in the woods that was different, and Wesley had always disliked them. "If we see any of them, we scare them off, got it?" He beat his flashlight handle into one palm like a club.
Katie rolled her eyes, "You're over dramatic."
There was a whoosh of sound from above and something heavy landed in the trees just ahead. All three teens backpedaled and stared into the darkness, their flashlights shining into the woods that spanned out just past the edge of the cliff.
"Holy shit, I saw something move in there." Wesley whispered.
"I saw it, too." Nate said, stepping closer to the woods with his light.
"What are you doing?" Katie hissed, grabbing his arm, but Nathan slipped her grasp and moved further into the trees. "Something's in there."
Before he got too far, a figure stepped out clothed in black. He was tall and had pale skin with a scowl on his face. "You are not supposed to be here." Ashton said, the lights shining on his face not phasing him. Silver eyes glinted angrily.
"Thank god, it's just a student from the Academy," Wesley breathed in obvious relief, stepping forward with confidence and arrogance, even as Nate tried to catch his arm to hold him back. "We're locals from Camden and these are our woods. We can go wherever the fuck we want." The boy declared.
"No. Not to the cliffs."
"Excuse me?" Wesley took two threatening steps towards the boy.
"I said not to the cliffs." Ashton's reply was still calm, but there was a slight curl in his lip, almost a snarl.
"Okay, well, he's right, and we can go where we want," Katie rose to Wesley's defense, coming between the two boys just to keep them from arguing. She knew Wesley had a bad temper and for all they knew, this guy could be one of the weirdos. "So just leave us alone, okay?"
"We're looking for a monster." Wesley said, "have you seen it? Big, black, ugly beast flying around the sky?"
Bristling, Ashton folded his arms. "No. There is nothing like that. Go back to your human settlement. You are not supposed to be here."
"This guy," Wesley laughed, looking over at Nate and jerking his thumb at Ashton. "Can you believe this?" In one step, he'd moved around Katie and swung his fist, catching Ashton in the jaw. As the tall boy staggered, taken by surprise, he continued forward, pushing him the rest of the way to the ground and shoving off Katie's grip to try stopping him. "I told you, freak. We go where we please."
"Wesley! Leave him alone!" Nate moved forward and caught his friend's arm, pulling him back. His eyes went down to Ashton on the ground as the boy rubbed his jaw.
"Leave," Ashton's voice was a bit more stressed this time. "Or I will make you leave."
Wesley laughed. "He's gonna make us leave, guys." A kick lashed out, catching Ashton in the ribs and causing him to double over. Another kick landed before Nate managed to get Wesley to back off.
Katie was on Wesley's other side, "Let's just keep going! He's not getting up. Come on, Wes. We don't--" her voice stopped short and her eyes went wide, then closed as she collapsed to the ground. Behind her, Ashton was rising to his feet, holding his side with an iridescent ripple of life energy filtering from Katie towards him, seeping in through his clothes as he straightened fully, a haughty tilt to his chin.
Nate's jaw dropped and Wesley burst into a rage, "What the fuck did you do to her, you monster!" He charged Ashton, fists flying and one of them armed with the heavy Maglite, and tackled the other boy back down to the ground. The red haired Nate went to Katie, checked her pulse, found her alive.
"Wesley! Wesley, she's alright! Stop! Let's get her back to Camden and forget this stupid idea."
But by then the damage had been done and Ashton was retaliating, not with his element this time, but with his strength. Bleeding and stunned by a blow to his scalp, Ashton snarled and caught the next blow, squeezing until the hand and the flashlight it was holding broke in his grip. Wesley cried out in pain, but Ashton wasn't finished, grabbing the human by his shirt to lift off the ground as he rose to his feet.
"Get away from my cliffs and never come back!" He growled out in a way no human voice could growl, his teeth showing and silver eyes flashing with his fury. It was all he could do to not transform, and even then, parts of his skin started to change to black, quelled by sheer force of will. Ashton threw Wesley to the ground and the boy scurried back, clutching his arm against himself and staring at Ashton fearfully.
"Alright! Alright, man! We're leaving!"
Katie was waking up and they didn't stop to explain to her what had happened, helping her to her feet to hurry off back towards the road with fearful looks over their shoulder.
Ashton staggered a step, his head swimming, and his hand came back bloody from the blow. He stepped towards the edge of the cliffs and, as Nate watched over his shoulder, he fell off the side. "Sweet Loa," he hissed out, only to see a dark winged figure rise on the night sky and fly away, towards the academy.
