Thread: Gilligan's Gala
WHO: OPEN to all
WHEN: Friday the 6th, evening
WHERE: The School Ballroom

As the parent of all the graduates had been herded of the school grounds, six French doors, two stories high, were opened, letting in the warm summer air. The path to these doors was marked by tiki torches. The doors led to the school ballroom, a remnant of older times, which was rarely used. It was a large, spacious room, with crystal chandeliers, a black marble floor and walls with ornate wood panelling. This night, it had been transformed.

The eye catcher was, of course, the indoor waterfall, surrounded by a fake rock wall, covered in plants, ferns and palm trees and lit up with colorful lights. From it spawned forth a small, indoor pool, the water no higher than most people's ankles. Students had been encouraged to wear footwear that was easy to slip in and out of, so they could wade in, if they wanted. Lining the walls, there were more palm trees and long tables, laden with snacks, fruit and mocktails served in tall glasses and hollowed out coconut shells. Behind the waterfall, there was an elaborate tropical set up, where students could have their pictures taken.

There was a dancefloor, of course, and a DJ had been hired, playing salsa, top 40 and island tunes. Freely available, there were towels, flower leis and small cannisters filled with bubble solutions.

Ms. Menides stood by one of the tables, beaming proudly at the room. She was wearing a white summer dress, coupled with large bracelets and a long, thin, silver necklace. Elegant, but not too formal. Her hair seemed curlier and her face younger. Graduation was both the best and the worst day of the year. She smiled, however, because the room looked amazing. Sometimes, there were perks to running a magical school.

Time to get the party started.

Barclay and Leon

Like Leon, Barclay had barely made any concessions to the theme of the dance. Unlike Leon, he didn't blend in naturally. The Brit, with his pasty white complexion that defied all sunlight, looked more like a moody teenage tourist than a proper islandgoer. Barclay had simply put on a dark blue t-shirt and some low-riding chucks. He had, however, put on a pair of shorts that were of such a non-descript color they had to be beige.

Nevertheless, he was impressed by the ballroom. It really looked like some sort of jungle paradise where some insipid pop queen could song about the power of independence or whatever. "It's humid in here," Barclay said. "I'm thinking the girls with the more elaborate hairstyles won't particularly enjoy it."

Barclay raised an eyebrow when Leon decorated him, and raised both when Leon made his joke. "Okay, for that joke alone, I should leave you alone right now. Instead, you'll get me a drink." Barclay gave the room a quick glance. He added, joking once more: "Lots of people here. It's a wonder you couldn't get any other date than me."

"Deh island air, mon." Leon chuckled in response in an easy Jamaican accent about the humidity. It was an island theme, after all, and Leon happened to be from the Caribbean. Three of the reasons he didn't have an island or Haitian accent regularly were currently following him and Barclay through the room with their gruesome faces.

"We've been here five minutes. You can't leave yet, Barclay." Leon protested, "But I'll happily get you a drink." Leading the way to the tables with various kinds of drinks, Leon selected an orange fruity drink for them both, looking at Barclay, then around the room with a nod and then a short laugh. "Hmm, not sure if that's a compliment or a jab at my lack of ability to land an actual date to the dance. Besides, you're one to talk."

"That's the worst Jamaican accent ever," Barclay declared, having absolutely no clue about Jamaican accents. "But you do look the part," he agreed. "It's disgusting. You're such a sell-out. With your dreadlocks and your necklaces and..."

Barclay shook his head, accepting the drink. He took a sip, and nodded approvingly. "I didn't want to go," he said. "I didn't need a date. Nor would I have gotten one if I tried, but you're conventionally attractive. You're alternative. You should've been able to get someone. Like that one." He pointed at a random person in the crowd, who turned to give him the eyebrow. "No," Barclay said, "not you."

"Everyone's a critic," Leon laughed, unfazed by Barclay's usual manners. Having Barclay as a friend, and apparently as a date, meant you had to not take yourself so seriously and be able to accept sometimes insensitive comments. Leon had heard worse from other students about his dreads, necklaces, and even some racial remarks that made Barclay's seem pretty complimentary. That might even be how the druid was intending them.

"I didn't want to go or need a date, either." The voodooist shrugged, glancing at Barclay when he turned flattering words his way. Leon waved apologetically at the boy Barclay had been caught pointing at, then turned to his friend. "Hold on, you think I'm attractive? Conventionally so?" He couldn't resist the opportunity to tease, even if he knew Barclay was only doing the same. "How long have you had these closeted feelings for me, Mr. Grisholt?"

"Yes, and yet, you made me go," Barclay said accusingly, giving Leon a begrudging look. "What was up with that, anyway? I still don't really get it. Why would you force yourself to come here?" Hastily, Barclay added: "You know, other than a misguided attempt to help a friend."

Barclay took a sip of his drink and then shoot Leon an unimpressed look. "Okay, I do have eyes. Anyone would be stupid to say you're not pretty, except for the hair." Barclay gestured vaguely. "Won't it frizz up in here? Anyway, take... Emily, for example. I can see she's pretty, but that doesn't mean I harbor any closeted feelings for her. The opposite, really."

Leon chuckled and checked the room again, this time not for the ghosts, but for sign of Mickey somewhere in some group of people. Mickey didn't typically do things alone. As long as the Spaniard saw him at the dance, it'd be good enough for Leon to justify his own attendance. Then he could show Barclay a mercy stroke and let them leave. "It's not misguided, Barclay. I told you why," he replied to the other witch, focusing on him again. "So we don't have to go next time. Besides, maybe this will do us both some good."

He listened to the other boy's spiel on attraction, his smile not fading as Leon crossed one arm over his front. "Or does it? I don't know. You and Emily. I can see it. Some people start out as friends, others start out as... whatever it is you two have going on." he sipped his own drink, then shrugged at Barclay. "But thanks. I think you're pretty, too."

"I didn't have to go this time," Barclay muttered. He was being a petulant child, he realized that, which is why he wasn't expecting Leon to respond to that phrase anymore. It was the same argument they'd had before, anyway. "Some good," he repeated, his eyes tracking the room. They didn't find Ashton and Emily.

Barclay scoffed at Leon. "This isn't a soap. When people in real life don't like each other, it isn't because we have these deep complicated emotions that we can't express. She's just annoying." He then pushed the other witch, taking the weight of the boy's comment that he was pretty too. Liar.

"So, what happens now?"

"Oh, just annoying. Gotcha." Leon laughed softly and balanced his drink when Barclay gave him a push at the pretty comment. He didn't press, assuming Barclay had been teasing anyway. And Leon didn't make it a habit of checking out guys, but he didn't think barclay was unattractive.

"Uh," unsure what exactly happened then, if anything had to happen then, Leon looked at the picture booth off to one side and then away. He was there, at the dance, there was no need to canonize it with a photograph. "I really don't know. Do you dance?" He paused, the rephrased his question, "Do you like to dance? I've heard the English are" kind of awkward "fun on the dance floor. Is it true?"

Barclay snorted. Did he dance? No. Did he like to dance? No. It was just making a fool out of yourself on the dancefloor. Barclay didn't particularly enjoy being a fool, and he didn't feel as if helping puberty along with that was a good idea. "No. I don't dance. I'm from the town in Footloose."

Barclay looked about the room, scouting for something else to do. His eyes found Ashton this time, together with Emily. They lingered, before Barclay remembered he didn't care. Go to the waterfall? "Let's go to the punch," Barclay said. "With some luck, it's been spiked already."

"Good idea," Leon nodded, finding it an easier solution than trying to convince Barclay to dance at a dance. It was good enough that he had come, and Leon would count it as a win in and of itself. There weren't many friends who'd be willing to agree to something like this when they didn't want to in the first place. He knew he'd have to show Barclay his appreciation somehow later.

As he was starting to move to the punch, Leon paused, seeing Barclay's stoic friend Ashton in a group with Emily, Oliver, and Sara, all three of them people Leon had never seen the Icelandic guy hanging around with before. He looked at Barclay to mention it, but left off his question when the thought occurred to him that maybe he and Ashton had had some kind of falling out.

But then: "Wait," he held up a hand, "Is that why you don't like Emily? She brought Ashton?"

Barclay followed Leon to table that carried the cherry-red punch, hoping that it would be spiked. The druid didn't revel in losing his inhibitions, but at social things... Well, liquor helped. It made other people easier to deal with.

And then Leon cottoned on to some things that he had no business cottoning onto.

"No," Barclay bristled. He disliked Emily because she thought she was entitled to his friendship, which she wasn't, and because she couldn't take no for an answer. You didn't force friendship on people, especially him. It had nothing to do with Ashton. "Why would I not like someone just because they're friends with Ashton?" He narrowed his eyes at Leon, daring the boy to come up with a good explanation.

"Well, because you guys are always hanging out, so I figured..." Leon shrugged. He didn't know Emily was friends with Ashton, so it must be a new thing. Maybe Barclay might feel left out, in addition to not liking Emily very much to start with. Resentment and jealousy could combine. Some people got possessive of their friends.

Testing the waters still, wanting to know the story like always, Leon pressed, "Should we go over and say hello, then?"

"No thanks," Barclay said dismissively, resuming his walk to the drinks table. As much as Leon wanted to know, that was how much Barclay would rather not talk about it. This was about feelings. Barclay was terribly British, he avoided them at all cost.

"I forget," Barclay said, "who asked you to come to the dance again? Don't they owe you a dance?" Barclay grinned. "I think you should know: I wanna watch when you try and boogie."

Concluding that Barclay and Ashton were indeed at odds if the druid didn't even want to go say hello to his friend, Leon followed to the drink table and, for once, went easy on Barclay. It had to be hard. Barclay was a prickly person to be friends with, so he didn't have a large number of them hanging in the wings to pick him up when he was down. Leon decided that the least he could do, since he could stand his fellow witch well enough, was let it go and allow Barclay to have a decent night - dance not withstanding. They were there. That's what counted.

He picked up a glass of punch, nodding thanks to Caleb with a smile, but focused on Barclay when he asked who. "Mickey Torres," he responded, unsure if he had told Barclay that before, and then unsure if he should have. Mickey's reputation was probably known to the brit-witch, and Leon wanted to avoid answering any uncomfortable questions about his own sexuality - not so much whether or not he and Mickey had slept together, or how often. As far as Barclay knew, or should know, Leon was straight.

"I'm sure he's off dancing somewhere already," he shrugged dismissively, but checked the dance floor and sure enough, spotted Mickey there, but dancing solo. A softer expression crossed Leon's face or just a moment as he watched his friend, one of fondness and endearment. The Djinni and he had really gotten closer since their casual platonic friendship took a turn for the casual platonic sexual road.

"And anyway, for your information, dancing is a part of my culture," he focused on Barclay again and raised the punch to toast the statement. "To both of my cultures."

"Mickey Torres," Barclay said, taking a sip of his punch, "that little h--" The word himbo died on Barclay's lips when he saw Leon's face when he found Mickey on the dancefloor. Something happened, something softened in there, and Barclay knew what it meant. He knew what it meant, because...

...Oh God, what if his face did that when he looked at Ashton when he thought no-one was looking?

Barclay smirked knowingly at Leon when the boy looked at him, obviously amused. He chose not to comment on it, instead digging into something else: "It's part of the English culture to drink tea incessantly and to end all my statements with a tag question, innit? Just because something is part of your culture doesn't mean you have to be good at it."

"No, but I do, and I am," Leon said with a smirk at his friend. "Still, I have the feeling that no matter how good of a dancer I am, you'll find something to be disgruntled about." He nudged Barclay and drank. "It's fine, though. Believe it or not, I'm not--"

Leon cut himself off abruptly when one of his spirits phased through Barclay, his face emerging from the other boy's and Leon did all he could to stop his immediate recoil. The spirit hedged on the edge of Leon's small bubble of protection that the monster tooth gave out, and then slipped off into the crowd again.

Leon blinked, "Uh. Sorry." He shook his head and looked down at his glass. "I just lost my train of thought. What was I saying?"

Barclay noticed. Of course he noticed. When someone you're talking to suddenly looks as if he's sniffing the proverbial dog shit on the other shoe -- or something like that -- people tend to notice. Barclay raised an eyebrow, looked around, and asked: "What? Do I have major halitosis or something?"

"No. No, it's nothing. It was just..." Leon looked over Barclay's shoulder, tracking the spirit for another few seconds as his heart rate steadied out once more. "Some sound," gesturing vaguely off to the side. "Startled me. What were we talking about?"

Filling the next pause with his drink, Leon took several long swallows.

Barclay knew about evasion. He himself was evasive enough when it came to his craft, protective of it in a way most people didn't understand. He wasn't a sharer. He liked keeping it private, working on it alone, and only revealing the successes to others. He knew when people were being cagey.

Leon was hiding something.

Barclay gave the other boy a long look before deciding to figure it out later. Tonight was not the night. "C'mon," he said, "let's check out the waterfall."
