Log: Pack
WHO: Matt, TJ & Teddy
NPCs: Random wolf
WHERE: School grounds
WHEN: Sometime after this
This full moon was far from natural, even as a newly turned wolf Matthew Riley could sense that, know it and feel it in his bones, which might explain the restlessness exhibited by the large tawny coloured wolf as it roamed the expanse of the woods. Unlike the others Matt wasn't playful, he moved with purpose, didn't stop to play or howl at the moon as he mapped out the woods and learned it like he would a second home. In the past he'd always been housed in the dungeons but in recent moons he had been allowed out to roam always with TJ not far from sight, the two practically inseparable as they moved as one solid unit.
It had only been on a brief sojourn that TJ had been attacked and Matt to this day still wanted revenge, to settle a score and put right what he saw as an injury to his pack. He just hadn't had the right opportunity, it was about biding time it would seem, and tonight, well, tonight was as good as any night. If Matt came across the wolf that had gone for his Beta he was going to teach it a lesson about why it shouldn't mess with the people he considered pack, not if it valued its life.
Comparatively TJ was far smaller than Matt given that his size as a human only seemed to triple in wolf form, sheer muscle working in perfect unison as he pushed his body to the brink, determined to roam as much as he could and also find his brother: Teddy. For all his animal instincts there was a lingering loyalty to his human family, to the flesh and blood that made up one Matthew Riley.
Emerging from the woods Matt’s gait was confident despite the scattering of students as his large form loomed and appeared silhouetted by the moonlight, a brief baring of teeth and low growl soon had them on their way which if you thought about it was a massive leap forward, especially given how much he’d struggled with control ever since he’d been turned against his will.
But then he caught a scent on the breeze, head lifting and nostrils flaring, and a flash of recognition entered the otherwise feral glint in Matt’s eyes and in a flash of a second he was gone, sprinting and bounding as he covered large distances in fairly quick movements.
It hadn't taken long for TJ to realise that Matt had taken off, his own body twisting and jumping into action as he sprinted off after his Alpha, catching up with him relatively easily as TJ was built for speed rather than strength and had many years of learning his wolf body behind him.
He barked at Matt to stop running though because they were approaching the school, and that wasn't somewhere they should be. They stayed away from the school grounds and he let out another sound, a little softer but still a warning that wherever they were going, they really shouldn't be.
Until he caught that scent, though, and a second one on the wind that had a growl rippling out of him from the pit of his stomach and the back of his throat, a snarl of familiarity with the other scent that was on the air and then, instead of pressing Matt to stop, he nudged his Alpha in the side to keep going.
Not too far from the Pegasus dorms, though too far for him to get back easily, Teddy Riley was trying to walk towards his friend's dorm. The Spinx dorm wasn't that far away but right now it felt like it was miles and miles and he wasn't running- even though he really wanted to- because he didn't want to look even more like prey than he probably already did.
He wished he had run, though, because there was a dark black wolf in the path in front of him, lips curled back and snarling, hackles raised and claws extended from his paws and Teddy just sort of froze, this was it- this was how he was going to die. He felt a panic curl in him, not wanting to look away but at the same time wanting to know if he could actually escape with his life and body relatively intact. It didn't look like it, because each slow movement he made caused the wolf to snarl again and move that little bit closer.
Matt didn’t need any encouragement to keep moving especially as he like TJ had caught an alien scent one that wasn’t welcomed nor wanted anywhere near his brother, the same brother he had spent most of his human life protecting. As they rounded on Teddy the sharp amber eyes cut past the human to the large dark wolf which stood in his way, a baring of teeth accompanying a low throated growl as Matt approached, his large frame effectively cutting between Teddy and the dark wolf.
With haunches up and lip pulled back Matt presented a fairly frightening sight, especially as his eyes burned into the other wolf.
Matt’s body language was basically wolf for “back the fuck off”.
TJ circled around Teddy as the younger teenager stumbled backwards, clearly afraid that now instead of one angry wolf, there were three. He patted his pockets, wishing suddenly that he'd taken someone up on their offer of silver because he was definitely going to get eaten. The smaller of the two new wolves was circling him, growling and snarling at the first one like he knew him and moving like he was shepherding Teddy back and out of the way.
He didn't quite know what was happening, but when he tried to run for it, the lither wolf just growled at him and it's ears went flat against its head. Teddy felt his eyes stinging a bit because he really didn't want to die and he was pretty sure when the curse was broken that they'd find him having been chewed on by a few wolves. God, his mom would have Uncle Charlie ressurect him just so she could murder him herself if that happened.
TJ was busy shepherding Teddy back so he wasn't paying attention to the other wolf who snarled aggressively, fur standing on end to make himself look bigger, ears flat against his head and body poised ready to attack if necessary. He was defending his territory from three intruders, now, and his paws flexed on the ground, giving a warning growl for Matt to leave before it was too late.
Only Matt wasn’t listening, he wasn’t about to be seen off by anyone, especially a wolf that had been previously snarling at his brother. Teddy might not be a wolf, but he was family and family was pack, that much he was certain of. Threatening him or any other member was unacceptable and Matt was about to deliver a lesson, his fur standing on edge and his mouth parting to expose the razor sharp teeth that glinted rather ominously in the moonlight.
If anybody was leaving it was going to be the other wolf.
Matt shifted his weight on his paws and shifted his posture, hunching forward and emitting a further growl, low pitched and guttural. He’d done this enough in the past few days to know how this worked and he wasn’t going to lose this fight.
There was pride and family at stake.
TJ made another sound at Matt, this time a sort of confirmation sound, as if he was trying to tell Matt that this was the wolf, a cross between a bark and another sound, teeth catching on the edge of Teddy's jeans as the young teen attempted to escape again, resuming his protective patrol around the younger teen, butting Teddy's head with his hand as if wanting to reassure him that he was safe with them. They weren't the ones to be worried about.
Teddy watched, stiffening and twitching in surprise when his hand was bumped, recoiling a little until he looked down into those strangely human wolf eyes and reached out, patting the wolf's head gently, but he was quick to look at the tawny wolf and the big hulking black one opposite it. They were roughly the same size. Teddy didn't want there to be a fight.
The other wolf shifted its feet in the dirt and shot forward, barrelling into Matt and tackling him with jaws open and claws unsheathed, going in not for the kill but to teach the other wolf a lesson for being disrespectful, bucking against another Alpha male in his territory and interrupting his evening.
Matt’s ears twitched at the sound from TJ and immediately he understood what the other wolf was telling him. This was the wolf, the very same one that had attacked him during the last full moon, the same wolf Matt had been gunning for ever since. Oh this was going to get ugly, real ugly, especially as the knowledge now caused Matt to bare his teeth in a way that indicated that he wasn’t going anywhere.
Before he had the chance to make the first move the black wolf was on him, knocking into him, but a twist at the waist had Matt keeping his paws on the ground and he was able to retaliate with a slash of claws aimed for the other’s face until he followed it up with a bite to the other wolf’s midsection.
The other wolf might not have been going for the kill, but Matt was, especially as it had not only hurt his Beta but had also threatened his brother. Blood had to be shed, position asserted and dominance clear.
Nobody messed with his pack and got away with it.
The wolf let out a howl of pain and anger, falling to its side and kicking out angrily, shaking its head, spit and blood flying off its muzzle and onto the floor as it circled, a low snarl coming deep from its chest, its circle taking it closer to TJ and Teddy, the former of which ensuring that he was putting himself in the way to protect the squishy human, the squishy member of his pack.
It snarled and twisted, tail lashing angrily back and forth as it shot forward again, body colliding with Matt's, teeth trying to sink into the fur at the side of Matt's throat, back feet kicking as he knocked the other wolf to the ground.
TJ howled again, hackles raised, ready to jump in if he was needed, his own tail lashing in angry, back paw kicking at the ground, lips curled back.
Matt let out a distinct snarl when the wolf came back around on him again and a distinct howl escaped him when those teeth sunk into his throat, drawing blood and causing pain. Only instead of making him want to stop it drove him on, to make him want to win this fight and show this wolf who was boss. His tail lashed back and forth in a frenzy as he kicked outward, rearing upwards and ripping himself free until he was able to finally retaliate.
He ducked beneath the other wolf and slammed his body weight as much as it was into the other, knocking it off balance and rounding on it as it attempted to find its feet, teeth and claws biting and slashing. It was vicious, ugly and the scent of blood was thick on the air.
It would seem Matt trusted TJ with Teddy given that his focus was the black wolf rather than Teddy, but why wouldn’t he? TJ was his Beta, he’d looked after Teddy.
The fight was completely brutal, neither wolf being willing to give in and relent until Matt got a particularly good bite in to the other wolf's back leg, sinking his teeth into the muscle there and with a furious, pained howl, the wolf finally relented and backed up, limping heavily with a whine and a murderous look in his eyes that this? This wasn't done. The wolf would go away, lick his wounds, but he wasn't done with Matt. Not by a long shot.
TJ shot forward once the wolf had been chased off, pacing in front of Matt protectively before he was coming closer to his Alpha, nudging Matt's nose with his and turning his head, rough tongue licking across the fur of Matt's neck and shoulder, smoothing it down and cleaning off the blood that was there. The bite was in a hard to reach place for him to clean himself and TJ had been running with Matt for several full moons now: he knew the wolf never really cleaned himself.
Teddy watched the interaction for a moment before he stepped a little bit closer, curiosity getting the better of him. Why has these wolves helped him? Why would they do that?
Matt returned the nudge of his nose with one of his own, head turning as TJ took to cleaning the still bleeding wound, eyes seeking and finding Teddy. He might be all wolf, but there was no denying that it was Matt, the look in those amber depths was all Matt. It would seem that despite his struggle with the wolf he was still able to identify family and do whatever he had to in order to keep them safe.
He didn’t even stand on edge as Teddy came closer, the previous aggression absent.
TJ nudged Matt's jaw with his nose, ducking underneath the larger wolf, making a discontented growl as he licked the injuries clean and started moving to some of the scratch wounds, one of which was just over Matt's eye. He licked it quickly, tail wagging a little before he moved on to others, aware that his Alpha was just letting him look after him in a way that, a few mere months ago, he wouldn't have allowed at all as he was too dangerous for anyone to go near.
Teddy bit his lower lip, trying to work out why the wolf seemed so familiar to him but he approached slowly, feeling an ache in his chest at how hurt the wolf had got protecting him. It took a few more moments but he approached and hazarded a guess at who it was.
"M-Matty?"
Progress had been slow, but it had definitely been made. Matt was now in a place that whilst his control was not perfect it was better so much so that he recalled events, knew what the wolf had been thinking and was more comfortable in his own skin than he had been in a very long time. He gave a low rumble when TJ’s tongue licked at his eye before he merely tilted his head when Teddy uttered the family nickname and he gave an affirmative bark.
Again, more progress. In previous weeks and months Matt hadn’t been able to recognise anything or anyone let alone his nickname.
Teddy looked like he was in equal parts relieved and desperately sad that it had been Matt that had got hurt saving him. He crossed over the remainder of the distance, all apparent fear gone as he crouched down in front of his brother, reaching out hesitantly with one hand and touching the tip of Matt's ear before he let his hand rest on the top of his brother's head. He would have hugged him, but TJ was still busy licking his way across the wounds he could find and Teddy didn't want to get in the way.
"Thanks, bro," he offered with a half smile, wetting his lower lip, suddenly unsure how to show affection because this was his big brother- he couldn't just- scratch under his chin or anything.
Matt’s head tipped his head into the touch to his ear before he merely took to nudging Teddy’s palm until sure enough he thoroughly licked the other boy’s palm. It wasn’t long before Matt was giving a short authoritative bark iindicating that it was time for them to move. Apparently in step with Teddy it would seem, to escort his brother, and make sure he arrived at his destination safely.
What? Like he was just going to bound off into the woods whilst Teddy was still outside.
TJ huffed out a breath as he wasn’t done cleaning Matt’s wounds, but instead just moved away to stand on the other side of the youngest Riley to escort him wherever he was going. Teddy just looked a bit confused before he realised that they were going to escort him to wherever he was going.
“Um- you don’t-” But one look at his brother (who stood way above Teddy’s waist height which was really scary) had Teddy not complaining, instead he just stood properly and began moving with his own little protective cohort of werewolves. He couldn’t help the way he felt sort of… superior and special in this moment, even if there were probably loads of his new friends that Matt would do this for. “‘kay.”
He bit his lip as they walked, as the two wolves chaperoned him to the Sphinx dorm, to see him safely inside.
