Thread: Two of a Kind, in a Full House
Who: Bert McColl and Valentin Graff
Where: Bert's cottage
When: Monday night / Tuesday morning
Though they'd started out with just Bert and Dallas at the cottage and Valentin coming by later that night, more students had shown up the next day and the day after. By Monday, Bert's small cottage wad quite filled with students. He'd ended up bequeathing his tiny home office to Dallas for sleeping, and using the two bedrooms (also not large at all) for students, boys in one room, girls in another. The kids were allowed, and encouraged, to get out of the house during the day, go for a walk, visit the carnival, shop, do whatever they wanted, just be back at a reasonable time and meals would be provided at the house whenever they were needed.
Bert's housekeeper, Mrs. Hart, was around some, but not too often, usually trying to be there when the house would most likely be empty. Some students had met her and she was a bit of a mystery herself. She was short and bone thin, her hair cropped short and a fiery red in color, a stern expression ever on her face. Though she looked to be in her early sixties, there was an intimidating air about her and most everyone who met her had the impression she wasn't someone to mess with. There was something else, a hint that she might not be human herself. She was obviously in the know about Bert being a vampire and about the school. In addition to cleaning, she was also keeping the fridge stocked with even the most obscure of everyone's dietary needs.
She'd last been in the house mid-afternoon, quickly cleaning up and filling the refrigerator and cupboards, then leaving again. That night, nearly everyone had come back for dinner and stayed in for the evening. It had become a chore for Bert especially to keep finding things for them all to do. He had a small selection of playing cards and board games (and had Mrs. Hart buy more) that he'd gotten out for them. He also let them have free reign of the television and radio, though he much more greatly encouraged them to browse his extensive collection of literature. There were bookshelves in every room. Much of it was classics, with some historical biographies and more obscure works mixed in. Bert had some modern literature, but not much, not often finding anything written in the last fifty years to be worth owning.
The group had kept themselves occupied one way or another, and eventually, one by one, retired to the bedrooms for the night. Being a vampire and not needing sleep, Bert had taken to spending the nights in either the kitchen or living room, reading, or studying, or cleaning. Tonight, in particular, there seemed to be an excess of dirty dishes needing cleaned, and the whole kitchen could use a wipe down. A few of the kids had decided to bake cookies for everyone, and hadn't done the best job of cleaning up after themselves. Bert plugged the drain on one of the two sinks and began to fill it with hot water, adding a little soap. Though he did have a housekeeper, he didn't want to make her work too hard on her or anything. Besides, it wasn't as if he needed to sleep.
