"Um," Valentin said, looking a bit wary, "I wouldn't say 'dark continent' if I were you. Words like that kind of got out of style around the sixties, what with the Civil Rights Movement and all. Rosa Parks did her thing, Martin Luther King did his thing, and we basically got equal rights for, uh, the folks who weren't exactly white."
"Also," he added, "Darius was born and raised in the USA. He's not from Africa. He's a lot more American than I am."
Valentin stood behind her, looking in the mirror and seeing the reflection she saw. In the mirror, there was no Valentin. "So, what do you think?"
