"Who was James Dean," Barclay corrected. "He's a cultural icon of the sixties, a modern legend, just like Marilyn Monroe. He was a promising actor who died very young in a car crash. That crash gave him a broken neck, but also catapulted him into never-ending fame."
Barclay grinned sharkishly. "He was an icon. He introduced the idea of t-shirt and jeans as fashion. Girls loved him, as did guys -- he may have been a gay role model too. And you know what he did? He was a pretty and unhappily disillusioned teenager, in a world where all American teenagers were unhappy and disillusioned. That's it. He led an unhappy life and died young."
Barclay nodded at the cigarette. "Don't smoke that. It's part of your outfit."
