Thread: pie in the sky
WHO: Tanek and Fisher
WHEN: November 3, 2018: late afternoon (backdated)
WHERE: Kitsune House: roof
The Kitsune House roof wasn’t the coziest of perches - certainly nothing like Hydra’s brutalist plateau or the medieval-esque nonsense of Ladon - but it was serviceable to those determined to reach it.
And to those who could tumble off without a care, Fisher supposed. But that was the sort she promised not to have when she invited Tanek. At the very least, it was the sort of thought she shouldn’t voice out loud. Herr Doktor wouldn’t approve.
As proof of her good intentions, Fisher dutifully brought up remnants of the pumpkin pie along with a bottle of pumpkin shrubs. She was already making batch for the bribe-slash-dinner with Neculai, so it was no hardship to make a little extra for an advanced tasting. It came out lovely: warm with cinnamon and cardamom, zing-y with ginger, a nip of vinegar. And pumpkin, of course.
Down below, the sport fields stretched out like patchy carpets with the year’s last greenery slowly succumbing to gold and red. Soon enough it’d be all black wood, gray air, and the occasional pulse-stopping whiteout. The October smell of smoke would be replaced by December blankness and dripping noses. Winter in Maine wasn’t picturesque so much as it was pulverizing. It made a body deeply crave thick socks and irrefutable shelter.
What was it that Rilke said…Wer jetzt kein Haus hat, baut sich keines mehr. Wer jetzt allein ist, wird es lange bleibe and then something, something. Generally Fisher retained poetry about as well as an artichoke retained calculus.
