There was something almost... frightening about that soundless laugh, and it caused Brendan's stomach to squeeze together in pity. It was an involuntary reaction, part sympathy and part horror, and Brendan recognized it. He saw it sometimes in other people when he was dealing with his brother.
It was something he could never show to Tomi, who at least had a sense of humor about his disability.
Brendan gave Tomi a rueful grin and said: "Thanks, though I'm rarely funny when I mean to be." Cheyenne would gleefully agree with that. "But yeah! I'll be sitting with my friends, but you're welcome to join." He paused. "The bat thing, that's because you're a vampire, right?"
