WHO: Johnathan and Xavier
WHEN: Friday
WHERE: the woods, not far from Ladon dorm
The week of classes was over and detention had been served, leaving Xavier with the freedom to do as he pleased. He was tempted to go into town later and check it out, even though he knew it wouldn’t be wise to go hungry into a place full of food when he was expected not to have any. Xavier wasn’t starving as the school did supply sustenance, but it was far from the best he’d had.
Temporarily bored in his room, Xavier began to reach out to his mind to what animals were near. He took some time looking through the eyes of a mouse, then a sparrow, finding nothing really interesting. He looked out the eyes of a chipmunk just inside the woods. It was up a tree and had a nice vantage point into the woods. Again, there wasn’t much of note to see, just trees and grass. He’d spent much of his childhood on a reservation with a woods nearby to wander, and the sight had stopped being of interest to him ages ago.
Xavier was about to stop when a movement at the edge of his view caught his attention. The chipmunk turned to get a better view. It was a person, presumably a student, in the woods. That was slightly more interesting, so Xavier watched. He could see that the person was a young man, definitely a student. He was moving away from the chipmunk’s perch, so Xavier compelled it to scramble down the tree and follow after. As the small animal followed and watched, Xavier couldn’t help feeling there was something familiar about this person, though he couldn’t say what it was. His movements and gait reminded Xavier of something or someone but he couldn’t recall exactly what. It was enough to keep his interest, to keep following. Finally, the person stopped walking and Xavier had the chipmunk move in a wide circle around him so he could see his face. Maybe it was just a classmate, someone he’d met earlier in the week, though Xavier knew that wasn’t it.
Finally, the chipmunk could see the person’s profile. The small animal stopped and stared, and in his room, Xavier recognized who he was seeing. Adolescence had changed him over the past few years. He was taller now, for one thing, but it was Johnny. Johnny was here. The chipmunk gave a quick look back toward the school buildings, just long enough to give Xavier a better idea of where in the woods he was, then Xavier let go of the animal. Not even realizing he was moving at top vampire speed, Xavier made for the door and the woods.
