Thread: Solidarity
WHO: Sumi & Derrick
WHEN: May 29
WHERE: Duke's Diner, and then Stables in Camden
Derrick had picked up Sumi at Pegasus dorm just like he said he would. He greeted her with a smile and a "Ready to get outta here?" before leading her to the parking lot where another group of students were sharing a ride down to Camden. Derrick didn't chat much on the ride down, and he was sure to keep his hands on his own lap so as not to be mistaken for trying to touch or hold anyone's hand.
Their classmates dropped them off at Duke's Diner and Derrick opened the door for Sumi. They got a booth together and sat on opposite sides. Derrick's clothes weren't anything out of the ordinary. His shirt had the Millennial Falcon being chased by TIE fighters. His jeans were worn and comfortable, skinny, but not too tight.
He knew Sumi must be wondering why he'd asked her to go out with him. She was friends with Ashley and Kendra, and that had sort of dissolved into a big confusing mess. Still, Derrick was happy Sumi agreed to come because he was afraid that Kendra might've said some bad things about him. Made fun of him. He didn't know. Girl talk stuff. And then Ashley started behaving really strange towards him. Yet here Sumi was. She was the kind of girl to judge for herself, and he liked that about her. Besides, she was Asian and he was African American and why shouldn't a couple of minorities get to know one another better, watch each other's backs? In Manhattan, Kansas there was very little of that. Solidarity.
"I'm really glad you came. I wasn't sure if my, uh... reputation proceeded me. Heh." Derrick opened the menu he'd already had memorized and poured over it like it was a Where's Waldo book, looking at every corner. As long as he played it cool and didn't overthink it like last time, this could be fine. Sumi was cool already. She was kind and friendly and his dad had always told him that you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals. That was why he'd suggested horseback riding, though honestly Derrick was terrified of the animals and was almost certain he was going to make a fool of himself. He'd laugh at himself, of course. That was always a perfect way to break the tension.
"What are you ordering? I'm thinking waffles. Who said they have to be a breakfast food, right?"
