Thread: Rumor has it
WHO: Liam Cabot and Adri Carter
WHEN: Monday afternoon (May 21)
WHERE: Ladon Common Room

It was a quiet afternoon, but it was also a Monday. A lot of kids were still pretty tired from the weekend. The general feel for the students was anxiety for the school year to be over. Everything felt like it was either moving unbelievably slow or entirely too fast. Monday was a day where everything moved in slow motion, especially for Experts. Liam had heard a number of them complaining and wishing it were Friday afternoon. That would mean their classes were done and they could enjoy more free time before graduation the following week. Liam was an intermediate, and so he still had two weeks left.

Adri's post to the network hadn't been up long, but it was long enough people saw it. Liam was not one of those people because he wasn't checking the network constantly. He did hear about the contents though. Apparently he was included in the converastion. From what he heard, Adri said she was in love with him. Liam wasn't sure what to believe, but Adri had made herself pretty scarce. He didn't know how to approach the topic with her either.

Chance afforded him opportnity. He was making his way back in from sports practice when he spotted Adri in the common room on her own. The lethargic Monday made the space sparse of its usual activity. While Hydra house's common room was typically barren, Ladon's was normally filled with life. People were probably in the library cramming for exams in a week's time.

Liam had a choice. He could walk away or he could talk to her. He hadn't been avoiding her but the two just hadn't reached out to say anything to each other. It would be easy to let the silence extend, but Adri was pack. He could disagree with her about Pavel's behaviour but in the end, he cared about her. She was his friend.

"Hey," he said, leaning against the doorframe, "Anything good on TV?" He could hear something playing but he wasn't really paying all that much attention to what it was.

It had been months since Adri had shut herself off from the world. At first, she had done it in case it became public that she was the one that Pavel had cheated on Valentin with, knowing that most would never understand. Honestly, she wasn't sure that she did.

Time went on and she wasn't being judged, that she was aware of, yet she still kept herself hidden away. The paranoia consuming her. It had been so long that she wasn't sure how to go about interacting with her fellow students anymore. It felt like any time that she had tried to it failed horribly, so she stopped, waiting out the school year, hoping to start anew in September.

Adri had taken advantage when she saw that the common room was empty when she take taken a break from her studying. She hadn't expected anyone to approach her, let alone Liam. So when she caught his scent, she did her best to ignore it, figuring that he would go about his day. When she heard his voice, she looked up in his direction with a shrug. "Not really," stated in a soft, flat tone. "I'm sort of just staring blankly for the most part."

Liam nodded, taking into mind her tone, "Yeah, well, nothing good is on TV anymore. It's all streaming, right?" He stepped in further, his sneakers making almost no noise on the carpeted floor. Nothing new for any supernatural being. People often expected werewolves to be lumbering around like brutish oafs, but they were not only strong but nimble. Anyone who saw a werewolf in action would recognize them for the dangerous predators they were. Wolves hunted in packs but they were hunters, even when they were at play.

"How're you feeling?" he asked, not really broaching the topic of him mentioned in her post. He was concerned about her though. She had identified her health problem, but she was talking about not coming back. Was that the only reason she was coming here? He wouldn't blame her. The only reason he was at this school was because his dad wanted to stick it to Emma's old man and force him to pay for Liam's education, even if he didn't expect Liam to continue in education after.

"I know full moons are rough but I heard you were feeling worse than usual."

"Yeah, nothing good on live TV," she shrugged. "Not even sure why the networks are still trying." Small talk didn't suit them well, and it became painfully obvious right away. She looked to move on with the conversation because she could tell that he was trying to have one.

"I think that I should be OK physically," she stated softly, completely turning her attention away from the television. "As long as I keep the sexual activity to a minimum." The full moon cycle was fast approaching, and she was already beginning to feel her natural draw to him. "Did you go to the dance?" she tilted her head.

"Yeah, I did," Liam said, "Cheyenne actually asked me. So we went and it was fun. I looked for you there, but i didn't see you. Thought maybe you missed it because you were still recovering from the full moon." Most weres recovered pretty easily from the full moon, but all of them knew now that Adri took longer because of her illness. Some things people took for granted, and weres had plenty to take for granted. not everything was smooth sailing.

Liam took a seat, more or less as close to her as they normally sat to each other. They were friends first, and he didn't want her to feel awkward or weird. chances were she did feel that. Hard not to when your inner feelings were exposed to the entire network and became a topic of discussion.

Adri looked down for a moment before quietly responding, "that's not why I didn't go, but as far as everyone else is concerned, I'd like to go with that." She knew that Liam knew more about what she had been going through on an emotional level than most of the school, but not completely. After kinda writing it down, she had mostly sorted her feelings out. Talking to someone would help. She wouldn't talk to just anyone, though. She was a mess, and she knew that he knew as much. He just didn't know how bad she was yet.

"Yeah, well, that's what I thought until . . . you know," Liam said and shrugged a shoulder. He sat back, resting his hands over his stomach and picking at his shirt, "I didn't actually read it. Anything I did hear was just second-hand, so I can't say how accurate it was. But it sounded like you were thinking about leaving."

He glanced over at her to see if he'd heard right. Apparently the whole post was loaded with stuff. The first bit he heard was about him. Other details arose but he wasn't sure how true it was. The rumour mill had a nasty habit of contorting facts.

"I wondered," she nodded. She hadn't paid much attention to the rumor mill lately, despite the fact that it could be good to know that they weren't saying the type of things about her that she suspected. She didn't have it in her, though.

"I went to the dance with him last year, that's how everything got started," she wasn't about to go into full detail, but she felt that bit was prevalent to the subject. She groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I said so much in there. Sure, it wasn't all clear, and it was mostly me rummaging through my thoughts, but I really had hoped no one had seen it."

She went with who to the dance? Oh right. Pavel. Liam hadn't heard about that part but nobody really talked much about Pavel nowadays. His infamy had died out and the weres in Ladon continued to ignore him though not quite so outrightly as before. They just stopped noticing he was there, and when they did, they strugged it off.

"So is he why you're thinking abot leaving?" Liam asked, "Or is it something else?"

"I feel like it all leads back to it," Adri frowned, shrugging a little. Did she want to go into things? Not really, but in her mind, he was one of the very few people who might care. "But I just feel like I'm almost better, and I have screwed my chances of getting into a new school, anyway."

She slowly turned to look at him again, tilting her head. "Why? Would you care whether I came back or not?"

There was a small sense of relief when she said she screwed up chances to go to a new school. Liam didn't want her to leave because of stupid social shit. He knew it could get intense though but to his knowledge, no one was bulyling her or putting her in a corner. He felt like he would've sensed that. Adri could hide things from Pavel but a lot of the wolves had sensed something was wrong with her. It was just hard to tell if it was her sickness or something else.

Liam looked at her, "Why wouldn't I care? You're my friend. You're pack. Of course I would care if you came back or not. Do you think I wouldn't care?" For Liam it was simple. It'd always been that obnoxiously simple. He grew up knowing that you protected your pack and coming to a school with multiple werewolves meant there was a familiar structure. A community that werewolves understood.

"I guess that I'm just going to have to work extra hard this summer and next year so colleges will actually look at me. I never really expected to go anywhere playing soccer," Adri shrugged. She wasn't sure why she cared so much about her future, but she did worry about it. She wanted to be independent and make her own way.

She took a few deep breaths, looking over to Liam. "I've been incredibly paranoid ever since the day of the flyers. Like logically, I know that I have absolutely nothing to worry about. If I did, it would have happened right away. It's just that, for some reason, I haven't been able to shake the feeling. I know that it's dumb. I really do. All of these thoughts have really brought me down."

"The name of this place alone should open a bunch of doors for you, to be honest," Liam said when she talked about her future, "St. Margaret's isn't enough a school that people are gonna turn away from." He knew the feeling though but at least she had that. The school could open the door and he knew Adri was more than capable of proving herself for the rest of it. Liam, on the other hand, had to depend on football because even with St. Margaret's, he knew that sports were going to pay for his education.

He raised an eyebrow when she mentioned the flyers, "It was definitely a hit piece against Pavel. Whoever did those definitely just wanted to hit him and not you. If they wanted to get you involved, I think they would've done it by now." He still felt a general dislike of Pavel. What he did to Adri, using his power like that, even if not on purpose, was so fucking stupid.

"What can I do to help you get those thoughts out of your head then?" he asked.

"It's hard thinking about the future when my present is so conflicted," she stated with a pout as she leaned against the back of the couch, looking over toward Liam. "Because really, I don't even know for a fact that the person who was responsible for the fliers even knows that it was me."

She sighed heavily, shaking her head. "I hate not being me. I've been searching for the fun loving girl that I was ever since I let the paranoia get to me and I thought that it had run its course. I have no idea what's holding me back. It could be because I'm sick and I feel like less than I should be because I am the child of an alpha. Because being paranoid opens so many doors for other fears to creep in."

She took a deep breath, letting out a chuckle. "See?! I'm a mess. I would much rather go back to my only crazy thought being that we're totally meant to be, just because we're both alpha kids like in some shitty RomCom. I'm normally this loud and obnoxious person who is well-loved all around because I just radiate a good time." Now she was just forgotten because she had gone quiet, but that could easily be turned around in the next school year.

"By now whatever happened is done and buried. If someone is trying to dig up old news, I don't think it'll go over well. Unless, of course you said some racist tweets a few years ago. Those will find their way back and haunt you forever," Liam said, half-joking but also half-serious. He couldn't say he knew exactly what she felt like. He did understand the feeling of not feeling like himself though.

"I know the pressure of being the kid of someone who is in charge," Liam said, "But you know, it's your fucking life and you should do what you want with it. You don't want to live your life concerned about 'what if' scenarios." He could use some of that advice for himself. Emma's choice to get rid of the baby had kicked open the door of 'what if' and then everything that happened after only added to the pile exponentially.

"Life ain't like the movies," Liam said and then smirked, "And to be honest, we're all a fucking mess. But we're friends and friends talk to each other when things are a mess. I'm sorry i didn't realize you were so quiet before. A failing on my part as your friend. I'll try to be better about it."

"I'm looking forward to the summer. I will be getting treatments, so that should help make me feel better. I've just really started to feel down because of my condition. Then I can come back in August, shiny and new," she clapped her hands together with a grin. "No one will even remember my little blonde breakdown or the fact that I almost let myself get killed."

Completely ignoring the seriousness of what she had just said, she moved on with a calm nonchalant-ness that was out of the ordinary after mentioning something so dire. "It's hard not letting our father's position define us. For us, it's practically the same as fucking royalty. It's a lot of pressure, and I'm the youngest of three kids. I have two older brothers who will be likely to named Alpha long before I ever even get to consider the idea of it."

She turned to fully face him, bringing her knees up to her chest. "I love you, Liam." She quickly held up her hand, "before you say anything, it's definitely not a romantic love. You met me while I was on my way to my worst. It was a slippery downhill slope, and you're the one sitting here, making sure that I'm going to be OK. You may have taken your time to get here, but I could tell that you were here for me if I were to have come to you. I mean... you would, right?"

"New year's are supposed to be for starting fresh, you can always use a new school year for that," Liam smirked, but he still felt a bit of worry. He added, "Besides, you were hot blonde, so I dunno if people are going to forget that so easily." The almost letting herself get killed might be one that few would forget but they had the sense to keep their mouths shut about it. Contrary to popular belief, high schoolers weren't assholes all the time.

Liam was starting to think that maybe what he heard from others had been false. They'd exaggerated it. He was even feeling more comfortable with the two of them just chatting. They both bore the weight of a potential call to the alpha position later in life. Liam would never, however, equate it with royalty. It definitely came with perks and his police record in Boston was pretty much non-existent but sometimes the king wasn't that great of a king.

And then she said she loved him. Liam's brow furrowed and before he could say anything, she clarified. Not romantic love. It was a love friends shared, though Liam always felt weird about the word "love" because it always felt way more intimate than he was comfortable allowing.

"I would be there," Liam said, "You're my friend, Adri. Friends are there for each other until one of them makes it clear they don't want the other around anymore." It was friendship and instinctual pack tactics. The primal need to stick with your pack, but it was more than that too. It wasn't just the call of nature. Nature drew them together but a real friendship made it just that, a friendship.
