Thread: Battle of the Bands! WHO: Liam, Alicia, Dom, Adri, and others (bring yo' own thread!) WHEN: Friday night WHERE: Martin & Marvin's Modern Theatre
Originally the whole affair was meant to be inside the auditorium, but a number students protested. They didn't want to sit and listen to music in a stufy auditorium. So they contacted the owners of Martin & Marvin's Modern Theatre and discussed a deal. They had a stage they students could use, but the school would have to provide whatever refreshment was involved. The process went smoothly, and thankfully with enough time that students were able to spread the word about the change in venue. As soon as the kids from St. Margaret's heard about this, they made sure to tell their friends, and by the time Friday rolled around, everyone knew where it was through the powre of word-of-mouth and social media. Even the choir and band teachers announced it in their classes.
A buzz of adolescent energy focused onto the theatre as the day started drifting toward the evening. The performers had been there as soon as school let out, finishing up talking with the lighting and sound crew to make sure any of the problems that arose the during the dress rehearsal the evening before were now ironed out. No wrinkles or snags, hopefully, would arise during the evening. At least nothing that couldn't have been avoided before.
By the time they were to begin, the concert portion of the theatre was packed. The staff was stretched thin but could step in as they needed. The owners partitioned a part of the theatre for drinks and some snacks. Throughout the rest of the evening, Alcohol and weed would find their way inside, despite attempts to prevent their intrusion.
But the whole thing was only starting, and the student body president of Camden Hills Regional High School went to the microphone, greeted by cheers and jeers from students.
"Welcome everyone to the CHRHS Battle of the Bands!" the girl chirped into the mic. She had long pinstraight blond hair that fell past her shoulders. She wore a black "Nirvana" shirt with a pair of jeans and sneakers. The shirt was tucked in, taking away from her attempt at looking more like the rest of her peers. The crowd howled, a mixture of mostly local city kids but a large number of St. Margaret's students intermingled. Near the back were some adults that didn't appear to be part of the PTA but came to listen to the music. Some of them dressed pretty casually but there were one or two in nicer dress. The owners paid a lot of attention to them, but most of the students didn't pay them any mind.
"We want to greet students from St. Margaret's Academy, some of whom will be participating this evening alongside our own students!" she continued, "This is the first time we've done a Battle of the Bands, and we hope that we can have more in the future, so please, remember to behave respectfully the your environment and pick up after yourselves." She rattled off some local school announcements about prom approaching but picked up on the fact that nobody really cared about whatever she ahd to say. They came for the music.
"OK, so after each band, we'll come out with our Cheer-O-Meter! Whoever gets the loudest cheers will win and get to play a special encore number they prepared in the event they win. So, without further ado, let the Battle of the Bands commence!"
The first group of students took the stage, using the enormous energy to give themselves the confident boosts they needed. Most of the bands that played that night were actually pretty good, though there were a few duds. Sometimes it was song choice and other times it was just bands that seemed more concerned with presentation than with actual performance. The songs were mostly modern, a lot of pop punk groups that appealed to radio listeners with a couple of indie songs tossed in.
Anyone who wanted to see the order of the groups just had to look at papers posted on the walls. It didn't name the songs they were playing, but who were in each group. Anyone who looked would see that the second to last band playing that evening would be the one Liam, Adri, Alicia, and Dom were all a part of. Thankfully, each group only played one song, so it wouldn't go too far into the evening. One could only hope there would still be energy left in the crowd by the time they came on stage.
