Fred held her arm out to hold him back. Even when she was human she had powerful arms; therefore, now as a vampire it was like holding a steel beam before the boy. "Oh yeah," Fred said, "I hear them calling to you. They say, get it over with quick or else everyone's going to think you're more of a pussy than they already think you are."
She wasn't entirely sure why she was trying to push the kid. Maybe she had a soft spot for him because he was a human and she wanted to make sure none of the supernaturals screwed with him. Maybe she just didn't like it when people wimped out of things like this. Either way, if she had to, she would "accidentally push him in, then dive in after him. "So go on," she said, "I can jump with you if you're too afraid." Her words came out as more mocking than helpful, and that was how she meant for them to sound. She may have been helping him, but Fred was not really the type to help in the way you actually wanted with things like this.
