Thread: Life Is A Game
WHO: Sasha & Van
WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 5, 8pm
WHERE: Sphinx Dorms, game room
Van didn't make it a habit of coming to the Sphinx dorms anymore for his gaming needs. Kitsune dorm had the consoles now, thanks to their new-ish Head of House, and bonus, Kitsune didn't have the two nerdy cheating techno-whatever-mancers, Mike and Derrick. But tonight, Kitsune was a little too rowdy for Van's tastes. He thought about just going back to his own dorm and playing on his DS or his Switch, but he was starting to feel cooped up there.
Gaming always helped Van work through problems he was facing. While his eyes on the screen and fingers manipulated the controller, navigating his avatar through quests and levels, his mind was elsewhere. The problem tonight was what to do about his herd. He'd been putting it off ever since Mr. Cavanaugh and Ms. Hallowfen had dropped the news on him that the herd wanted him back.
Wanted him back.
He was one of them, one of theirs. They'd been looking for him for the past sixteen years. He had somewhere he belonged. Not a foster home, not another orphanage, not even a half-way house. He had a family. Or something close to a family. More than he ever thought he'd have, anyway. Van had stopped holding out hope of being adopted a long time ago at a much younger age, and all along he'd had a lost family out there that wanted him. Wanted him back. He was lost and now he was found.
That, of course, was what he had to figure out. Did he want to be found? Van had become independent and he prided himself on that. He didn't need anyone. Besides, his parents, his real parents - this was still such a wild thought for him - were dead. Truly dead. At least he'd been given that much closure.
While Van wrestled mentally with conflicting emotions, he played video games. The young kelpie colt was stretched out in his human form on the floor. His back was against the couch and a half empty bottle of water was beside him. Whenever a movie sequence began in the game, he took a drink and wiped his mouth on the back of his hand, zoning out.
During one such zone out, Van realized Sasha was standing in the entryway. He was so taken back by Sasha's appearance, his outfit and makeup, that he didn't realize the playable part of the game had started again and his avatar was getting shot by enemies. When he glanced back at the screen, Van swore and scooped up the controllers, too late to save Nathan Drake from his demise.
"Fuck! Thanks a lot, Sasha."
