Thread: Swimmers
WHO: Kendra and Nick
WHEN: January 26, after classes
WHERE: Indoor pool
This semester, Neculai had changed out his volleyball class with swimming after seeing how much fun the students had in the pool. When he'd tried it out, water surrounding him completely, caressing him, he'd instantly fallen in love. Being trapped in a mirror for years was not only deafeningly quiet, but it was a type of sensory deprivation that made Nick, several months into living in the real world, appreciate every nuance.
He liked swimming, but he wasn't very good at it. Just like he hadn't been very good at volleyball. He was getting better at controlling his body these days, so extra practice was both necessary and meditative.
The indoor pool didn't look like it belonged in the lower levels of an old castle, but there it was. Neculai walked out of the boy's locker room and into the big echoing room where the pool surface was disturbed by motion. He thought he would be alone, and was surprised to hear some splashing in the deep end. Padding on bare feet, Neculai pulled the towel off his shoulders and laid it on a chair. His swim speedo was black with a white stripe on the sides. His skin was covered in tattoos. It was a canvas of etched summonings that were perfect reflected replicas of Sorin's skin. All except for the black dog. Sorin had taken that one away and it had died with him.
Nick stepped over to the base of the lower diving board and gripped the handrail to lean over and look into the rippling water.
